Chapter 55: I Will Save Her 2

Far from Fred, Princess Lyra Ashre was staring at a stone wall. She had been for so long she could almost remember every crack. The room she was in had no windows. Only a lamp hanging near the entrance. Showing her the rough stone, locked door and thin bedding (which she had refused to use for most of the day). Her wrists were no longer tied.

Instead, dark ropes were around her ankles. Whatever method they had used to tie them made it hard for her to use too much mana. She had tried a few ti

He placed the parchment back on the table. "There's no broken channels stopping him from using magic. He's not injured. There's nothing obviously wrong with him. His mana is in the right place." He tapped the empty circle. "There's no Path." Her expression became uneasy. "And you want to put Dark magic into him?" "I want to see what happens when external Dark mana interacts with someone who has mana but no affinity." "You could kill him." "Yes." She froze. He continued. "Which is why I'm not going to be careless." Her anger rose. "So I'm meant to feel better knowing you're going to carefully experiment on him?" "No." "Stop treating him like an object!" He looked at her. "He's not." "Then treat him like a person." "I am." She stared. His expression didn't change. "You can still study a person." "You really don't get it do you?" "That assumes I care about him being normal." She shook her head. "He's not going to co-operate." "I don't require cooperation." "He's going to fight back."

Everything had changed. Lyra had realised, there had been quite a bit of quietness. Some guards would wander the halls, some couriers would occasionally enter Felan's rooms, and some small groups would disappear down the halls that Lyra was not allowed to go down. But now there was non-stop commotion. Boots thudded on the stone outside her room. Weapons were being carried down the passages. Commands were shouted. Something was happening. Something big. She sat on the edge of her small bed. Another group came past. There were at least six people. Maybe more. Then everything went quiet. She frowned. "What are you doing?" No answer. She stood up. Although her ankles were tied down, making her movement limited and her mana difficult to collect too much of at a time, she had tried enough to know that it wouldn't do much good to struggle. But she still walked towards the door. "Guard!" No reply. She knocked. "Guard!" A few seconds passed before the door opened. A Black Path Mage stood t

Salia looked out at the open gates. "Fred always says we should think before we do something stupid." Narissa looked at her. "Are you talking about him?" "Who else?" Salia clenched her fists. "He always tells everyone to be careful but then does something like this." Narissa gave a small troubled smile. "That's Fred." Salia looked away. "When he gets back I'm going to give him a punch." Nalia immediately shook her head. "No!" "Why?" "Because he'll get hurt." Salia fell silent. She hadn't thought. Her anger was slowly fading and her worry took over. "I'll give him a punch when he's better." Narissa sighed. No one laughed. Not even Salia. The gates to the Royal Academy remained closed. The damage had not been fully repaired and soldiers were still walking around. Investigators were looking around where the kidnappers had fought. Students had been sent home but several had returned to the entrance to see if they could find out any information. Kale Draven stood outside the gates with h

  • Chapter 60: The Kingdom Moves 1

Daylight broke over Arkarin, but it was far from a calm day. The news of the kidnapping of Princess Lyra had spread across the Empire of Arkadis. Merchants were talking about it in the streets, noble families were sending messages to the palace and more soldiers were walking around the capital. The Royal Academy was now closed to regular students and guards were set up on key roads and entrances. More news reached the palace. Fred Meyer - the third son of Baron Alvin Meyer - had gone missing from his family's estate. This only added to the tension. Inside the war room of the palace, several nobles and military commanders were gathered around a large table. The table had a detailed map of the empire laid out with markers around Arkarin and surrounding areas. King Aurelius stood at the head of the table looking over the reports. Alvin Meyer stood to the right of the king, with Theron and Axel behind him. None of them looked particularly happy to be there. King Aurelius looked up.

Fred awoke with a pounding headache. He looked around, his vision blurry. Several lamps were attached to the stone walls above him, casting a pale light onto the ceiling. The air smelled of herbs and metal. There was also a strange smell that made his nose wrinkle. Fred tried to sit up. Something was pulling on his wrists. Looking down, Fred noticed his arms were strapped to either side of a thin stone table. Metal bands wrapped tightly around his wrists and ankles. He tried to pull with more force, but they just tightened.Fred winced. His shoulder was throbbing. Every time he breathed too deep, his ribs would hurt and his back felt like it had been hit repeatedly with a hammer. He remembered fighting in the forest. The dark bands wrapped around his body. The final blow that sent him into unconsciousness. Fred was no longer on the road. Fred slowly turned his head. There were a lot of shelves. Glass jars, books and odd looking tools were spread around several wooden tables. Some jars

The impact shook through Fred's arms. He didn't contest the strength. He redirected. Fred stepped around the man's side and drove his shoulder into his chest. The mage stumbled. Fred immediately turned. Too slow. A black projectile tore past his cheek. Fred dropped low. A second attack passed over him. He rolled, planted one foot, and rose with his sword already moving. "Royal Technique, Third Form: Crescent Reaver!" The sweeping strike forced the nearest mage backward before his spell could finish. Fred did not chase. Three against one. Getting surrounded meant losing. He moved toward the edge of the road, trying to keep all three opponents in front of him. The first mage recovered. "He's better than the report said." "Doesn't matter." Darkness surged from the ground. Fred jumped backward. Black tendrils snapped upward where his legs had been. Another spell came from his right. Fred twisted. The attack struck a tree behind him and shattered part of its trunk. Fred's stomach tight
