CHAPTER 15: THE WEIGHT OF GRIEF

Nova's body was laid to rest in the Sanctuary's garden.

It wasn't a real garden—nothing in the simulation was truly real—but it was beautiful. Flowers bloomed in colors that shouldn't exist, their petals glowing with soft light. The sky above was clear for once, the perpetual rain finally ceasing as if the simulation itself was mourning.

Dante stood at the edge of the garden, watching the ceremony from a distance. He couldn't bring himself to get closer. Couldn't bear to see Nova's face one last time, to say goodbye to someone who'd become so important to him.

Valerie found him there, her footsteps soft on the grass.

"You should be with them," she said. "She would have wanted you there."

Dante shook his head. "I can't. I can't face it."

Valerie was silent for a moment, then she reached out and took his hand. "I know it hurts. I know you feel like you've lost everything. But you haven't. You still have us. You still have me."

Dante finally looked at her, really looked at her. She was pale, exhausted, but her eyes were steady. She'd been through so much, suffered so much, and she was still standing. Still fighting.

"I don't know how to do this without her," he said. "Nova was the one who calculated everything. She saw the paths we couldn't see. She kept us alive."

Valerie squeezed his hand. "She kept us alive because she believed in us. She believed in you. And now you need to believe in yourself."

Dante was quiet for a long moment. When he spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

"What if I fail? What if I can't do this?"

Valerie stepped closer, her eyes meeting his. "Then you'll try again. And again. And again. Because that's who you are, Dante. You don't give up. You never have."

She reached up and touched his cheek, her fingers warm against his skin.

"Now come on. Marcus is waiting. We have a war to win."

The resistance gathered in the command center to plan their next move.

The Council had retreated, but the victory was hollow. They'd lost Nova. They'd lost countless others. The Sanctuary was damaged, its walls cracked, its foundations weakened. And the Council would return. They always returned.

Marcus was at the table, his Golem Forge constructs standing at attention around the room. His face was grim, his green eyes shadowed with grief.

"We need a new strategy," he said. "Nova was our strategist. Without her, we're flying blind."

Dante nodded slowly. "I know. But we're not completely blind. The Foreman—the child—he knows the simulation better than anyone. He can help us."

The child stepped forward, his brown eyes wide and uncertain. "I'll do whatever I can. I've been analyzing the simulation's code, trying to find a way to counteract the Council's attacks. There's a weakness—a vulnerability that we can exploit."

Dante's heart raced. "What kind of vulnerability?"

The child's expression flickered. "The Council's control is anchored to the simulation's core—the heart of the System itself. If we can reach the heart, we can rewrite the code. We can break their control permanently."

Dante's jaw tightened. "And where is the heart?"

The child pointed to the center of the holographic map. "At the center of the simulation. The place where everything began. It's protected, of course—guarded by the Council's elite forces, surrounded by layers of code that are almost impossible to breach. But it's there."

Dante studied the map, his Architect ability flickering at the edges of his vision. The heart of the System. The place where everything began.

"That's where we're going," he said. "That's where we'll end this."

The planning continued for hours.

Marcus's constructs reinforced the Sanctuary's defenses, creating a perimeter that would hold against the Council's next assault. The child guided them through the simulation's code, revealing secrets that had been hidden for centuries. Valerie stood at Dante's side, her presence a constant reminder of why he was fighting.

And Dante—Dante built. He built walls and foundations, weapons and defenses, structures that would protect them on their journey to the heart of the System.

But every construction came with a cost.

He felt it with each new structure—the drain on his Architect ability, the weakening of his connection to the simulation. He was giving up pieces of himself, piece by piece, until there would be nothing left.

"Stop," Valerie said, her voice sharp. "You're killing yourself."

Dante shook his head. "I have to. I have to build enough to protect everyone."

"No." Valerie stepped in front of him, blocking his path. "You don't have to do this alone. I'm here. Marcus is here. The child is here. We can help you."

Dante met her eyes, and for a moment, he saw the truth in her gaze. She was right. He couldn't do this alone. He'd been trying to carry the weight of the simulation on his shoulders, and it was crushing him.

"Okay," he said. "Okay. Let's do this together."

They built through the night, working side by side.

Dante's Architect ability flowed with Valerie's, their power merging in a way that felt almost natural. Marcus's constructs provided the resources they needed, their stone bodies carrying materials and reinforcing structures. The child guided them through the code, pointing out weaknesses and vulnerabilities.

And when the sun rose, the Sanctuary was ready. Its walls were reinforced. Its defenses were solid. Its foundations were stable.

But Dante knew it wasn't enough. The Council would return, and they would bring everything they had.

"We need to move," he said. "We need to reach the heart of the System before the Council attacks again."

Marcus nodded, his green eyes blazing. "We're ready. My constructs will protect us."

Valerie stepped forward, her hand finding Dante's. "And I'll be right beside you."

Dante looked at his allies—his family—and felt something he hadn't felt in months.

Hope.

"Then let's end this."

  • CHAPTER 14: THE ELITE ASSAULT

The Sector Council mobilized faster than anyone anticipated.Dante stood on the Sanctuary's eastern wall, his Architect ability scanning the horizon. The sun was setting, painting the ruins in shades of orange and red, but there was no peace in the beauty. The sky itself seemed to tremble with the weight of what was coming.Forty hours. Not forty-eight, not forty-three—forty. The Council had accelerated their timeline, and their forces were already approaching the Sector's borders. He could see them now—a tide of constructs, Users, and weapons that stretched across the horizon like a wave about to crash. Golden light blazed from their ranks, the same sickly gold that had once filled The Foreman's eyes. The Council had sent their best. Their elite. Their executioners.Dante's jaw tightened. He'd known this was coming. He'd prepared for it. But seeing it—feeling the weight of it pressing down on him—was something else entirely."We're outnumbered," Nova said, appearing at his side. Her

  • CHAPTER 13: THE EVOLUTION

They emerged from the Dungeon of Echoes with seconds to spare. The fissure collapsed behind them with a sound like a thunderclap, the green light flickering and dying as the pocket zone sealed itself off from reality. Dante hit the ground hard, his knees buckling, his chest heaving with desperate gasps for air. The world spun around him—the ruins of Sector 17, the gray sky, the distant glow of the Sanctuary's walls—all of it tilting and blurring as exhaustion clawed at his consciousness. He lay there for a long moment, staring up at the clouds that never seemed to part, feeling the cold concrete beneath his back and the ache in every muscle of his body. His hands were trembling. His mind was foggy, still half-lost in the memories the dungeon had forced him to relive. The building collapse. The faces of the dead. His father's disappointment. His mother's fading smile. He squeezed his eyes shut and forced the images away. They weren't real. They were just echoes. Just shadows of a past

  • CHAPTER 12: THE DUNGEON OF ECHOES

The entrance to the Dungeon of Echoes was a fissure in reality itself. It appeared at the edge of the Sector, a shimmering tear in the simulation's fabric that pulsed with sickly green light. The air around it was cold, sharp, filled with the whispers of memories that had been trapped inside for centuries.Dante stood at the threshold, his Architect ability flickering. He could feel the dungeon's power—its hunger, its desperation, its need to consume."This is it," Marcus said, his voice tight. "The Dungeon of Echoes. Once we enter, we won't be able to leave until we reach the center."Dante nodded. "Then let's not waste time."They stepped through the fissure together. The dungeon was a labyrinth of memories.Every corridor they walked through was a different moment from someone's past—a childhood home, a battlefield, a hospital room, a wedding. The walls shimmered with images that flickered and changed, showing glimpses of lives that had been lived and lost.Dante saw his own memori

  • CHAPTER 11: MARCUS'S GAMBIT

Dante found Marcus in the Sanctuary's armory, surrounded by weapons and constructs he'd been building for weeks. The room was a chaos of steel and stone and glowing blue light. Marcus's Golem Forge constructs stood in neat rows along the walls—soldiers, guards, workers, each one pulsing with the energy of their creator. And at the center of it all, Marcus himself was hunched over a workbench, his hands moving with practiced precision as he assembled something that looked like a bomb."Marcus," Dante said, his voice echoing through the armory. "We need to talk."Marcus looked up, his green eyes bloodshot with exhaustion. "About what?""About Elara. About the Council. About what we're going to do next."Marcus set down his tools and turned to face Dante. His expression was unreadable, but there was something in his eyes—a flicker of desperation, a hint of fear—that Dante hadn't seen before."I know what we're going to do next," Marcus said. "We're going to fight. We're going to win. And

  • CHAPTER 10: MEMORY HARVEST

The cathedral dissolved around them like morning mist.Dante blinked, and he was standing in the hidden space once more—but it was different now. Brighter. Warmer. The walls no longer pulsed with the cold blue light of the simulation's code; they glowed with a soft, golden warmth that felt almost like sunlight. The Foreman—no, the child—was standing beside him. He was small, no older than twelve, with dark hair and eyes that were no longer golden but a soft, human brown. His expression was uncertain, fragile, like a bird that had just learned to fly."I don't know what to do," the child said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I've been in control for so long. I don't know how to be... free."Dante knelt down to meet the child's eyes. "You don't have to know everything right away. You just have to be willing to learn."The child nodded slowly. "Will you teach me?"Dante smiled—a genuine smile, the first one in what felt like years. "I'll try."The resistance gathered in the hidden spa
