Lain stood right behind his two massive helpers, his fingers hovering over the glowing blue system screen that floated in the hot air. The crimson sky felt like a physical weight on his face, and the distant sound of burning buildings echoed through the empty city blocks. Sirens wailed in the distance, a lonely reminder of the civilization that had collapsed only hours ago.
"Lain, we cannot stay out in the open like this for much longer," Leo shouted over the din of battle, swinging his metal tool to strike a smaller monster that had managed to slip past the frontline. "The noise from that synthesis explosion is drawing more of them from every single block in the district!"
"Hold on just one second," Lain replied, his eyes darting across the glowing text lines scrolling down his interface. He needed to understand his limits before they were entirely overwhelmed by the incoming wave.
Current Points: 60
Zombie Inventory: 2/3 slots filled
Unit 1: Spiked Guard (Lv. 5 - Damaged)
Unit 2: Iron Blade Vanguard (Lv. 4 - Full Health)
"System, what are the exact operational rules for my inventory slots?" Lain thought, his mind focusing on the small grid icon at the corner of the screen.
The interface changed instantly, replacing the status bars with a glowing schematic of his own brain, mapped out with three pulsing blue boxes that represented his mental storage capacity.
Rule 1: You can store your active helpers inside your mind inventory to heal their wounds when they are not actively engaged in combat.
Rule 2: Stored helpers take exactly ten minutes to regenerate broken bones and damaged tissue, consuming zero system points during the resting phase.
Rule 3: If a helper's health drops to zero and it dies completely in the physical world, you lose its level, attributes, and data forever.
"Mavis, Leo, get behind that metal fence right now," Lain called out, pointing toward the heavy, broken security gate of an abandoned grocery store across the street.
Just as he spoke, the Spiked Guard took a heavy, crushing hit from a bloated, high-level monster. The guard's stone skin cracked with a loud snap, and a thick green fluid began to leak from its chest plate, causing its massive arms to move much slower than before. Its health bar on Lain's screen dipped into the yellow zone, flashing a critical warning.
"Spiked Guard, return!" Lain commanded, extending his arm and pointing his index finger directly at the towering stone creature.
A sudden flash of brilliant blue light hit the Spiked Guard, and its massive eight-foot body instantly dissolved into thousands of small, sparkling particles of light. The particles zipped across the street, flying straight into Lain's forehead without causing any pain. The level-five helper was now completely safe inside his mind inventory, beginning its ten-minute countdown to full health, leaving only the newly synthesized Iron Blade Vanguard to hold the line on the asphalt.
"Iron Blade, spin your arm weapons and push the horde back!" Lain ordered, his voice sharp and authoritative.
The sleek metal helper raised its long, sharp forearm blades and began to spin its upper torso like a mechanical top. The glowing edges sliced through five incoming monsters at once, painting the pavement with dark fluids and creating a small, temporary circle of safety around the survivors.
"Now, move inside the store," Lain said, grabbing Leo and Mavis by their arms and pulling them quickly through the gap in the broken security gate.
They scrambled into the dark interior of the grocery store, and Leo immediately slammed the heavy glass door shut. He grabbed a long metal pipe from a nearby display rack and slid it securely through the handles to lock it in place. Outside, dozens of pale, blood-stained hands began slamming against the glass pane, making the frame creak and groan under the sudden pressure.
"This place is completely empty," Mavis said, her voice echoing slightly in the dark as she looked at the knocked-over shelves and scattered cardboard boxes of food. "People must have taken everything from the counters during the initial panic when the sky first turned red."
"We do not need to worry about food right now," Lain said, walking deeper into the store and sitting down on an overturned plastic crate to catch his breath. "We need a temporary plan, a map of the sector, and a way to maximize my current point total."
As if responding to his thoughts, the blue screen in front of his eyes flashed with a bright new notification banner.
Daily Task Unlocked: Protect your team for one hour inside a closed, reinforced building.
Reward: 100 System Points and one Random Material Box.
"Lain, your system screen is glowing much brighter than before," Leo noted, walking over and sitting down next to him on the dusty floor tiles. "What exactly does it say?"
"If we can manage to stay inside this building for an hour without dying, the system will reward us with a hundred points," Lain explained, using a piece of cloth to wipe the black monster blood off his metal tool. "That is more than enough points to upgrade the Iron Blade Vanguard or fix the Spiked Guard instantly if things go wrong outside."
Mavis walked toward the back section of the store, her shoes crunching loudly on pieces of broken glass. "Lain, you need to come look at this pharmacy section. There are several bottles of industrial chemicals left behind on the bottom shelves."
Lain stood up, his joints popping from the strain, and walked over to join her. The pharmacy counter was completely smashed, but several brown glass bottles of rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and various chemical catalysts were still sitting undisturbed inside a large cardboard box.
"Can your system use these raw materials for anything?" Mavis asked, picking up a clear plastic bottle and holding it up to the light. "The monsters are clearly made of an altered biological structure, so these highly reactive liquids might change their chemical makeup during your synthesis process."
Lain extended his hand and touched the surface of the bottle. The moment his skin made contact, his screen chimed with a low, satisfying sound.
Item detected: Chemical Catalyst. Do you want to add this resource to your System Inventory?
"Yes," Lain thought. The bottle vanished from Mavis's hand in an instant, turning into a small, stylized icon of a blue flask inside his glowing digital grid.
"Wow," Mavis whispered, her eyes widening with genuine scientific excitement as she stared at his forehead. "You can actually store real, physical objects inside your mind space too, not just your mutated helpers."
"Only things that the system recognizes as upgrade materials or catalysts," Lain clarified, turning his head back toward the front glass door where the noise was intensifying.
The crowd of monsters pressing against the glass was growing larger by the minute, and the thick pane was starting to show small, spider-web cracks along the center frame. The Iron Blade Vanguard stood perfectly still right behind the door, its metal blades clicking together rhythmically as it waited for the glass to inevitably shatter.
"Lain, the big mechanical spider downtown is moving its legs again," Leo warned, looking out a narrow side window that faced the center skyscraper.
The incredibly loud, deep horn sound from space echoed through the concrete walls of the grocery store, making the floor tiles vibrate under their boots. The massive purple portal in the sky was spinning much faster now, shooting long lines of dark violet lightning into the gathering crimson clouds.
Lain checked his inventory timer, his heart rate steadying as he prepared for the next wave.
Spiked Guard healing progress: 4 minutes remaining.
Daily Task progress: 12 minutes remaining.
"We just need to hold this front door until the timer hits zero," Lain said, tightening his grip on his trusty metal tool. "If the glass breaks before that time, we will use the Iron Blade Vanguard to choke the narrow doorway and control the flow."
Suddenly, a massive zombie with an iron motorcycle helmet fused directly into its skull ran straight into the glass door from the street outside. The thick glass shattered into thousands of tiny pieces with a deafening crash, and the angry mob of monsters began pouring into the narrow entryway like a wave.
"Iron Blade, attack!" Lain roared, pointing his tool forward.
