The Core of the Tower

The glass desk under my hands cracks into a thousand tiny pieces.

A loud wave of sound echoes through the high room, like a bell ringing inside a metal box. The white lights on the ceiling flicker and turn off. Every computer screen in the room goes dark for a second, then flashes back on with a bright purple glow.

Council Head Vane stumbles backward, tripping over her own shoes and falling hard onto the clean white floor. Her face is pale with absolute panic. She points a shaking finger at me, unable to speak as the core system changes around us.

What did you do? she gasps out, her voice tight with fear.

I do not answer her. I look down at my hands. The purple light is not just shining on my skin anymore. It is flowing out of my fingers in thin streams of energy, connecting with the broken wires of the desk. The computer screens around the room start scrolling fast with long lines of text, numbers, and old files that the council tried to hide away forever.

Lyra drops the heavy metal box. It hits the floor with a loud thud, spilling out loose data chips across the white tiles. She stares at the screens in total disbelief. Her clever, calm face is gone, replaced by sudden, raw shock.

This is impossible, Lyra says, taking a step back. The core system is locked by council encryption. No single user can override the main grid.

You forgot one simple thing, Lyra, I say, turning around to face her. My voice sounds deeper, steady, and completely calm. The fear that weighed me down in the slums is gone, burned away by the truth of what I am. "You wanted the bloodline to open the door. But you forgot that a true king does not just open doors. He takes control of the house.

I raise my right hand, and a wave of purple energy shoots across the room. It hits the heavy glass doors of the vault, locking them tight from the inside. The elite guards outside slam their blue swords against the glass, but the thick material does not crack. They are locked out.

Council Head Vane scrambles up from the floor, backing away until she hits the far glass wall of the tower. "Guards! Breach the doors!" she shouts into her wrist communicator, but the device only gives back a loud, static buzz. The system is mine now.

I walk slowly toward the glass desk where Lyra stands frozen. She looks down at the data scrolling across the screens, her dark eyes wide as she reads the names popping up on the display.

Look at the screen, Lyra, I say, pointing a finger at the main monitor. Look at what your precious council did before they put you in charge of this game.

Lyra looks at the screen. The text shows secret records from fifteen years ago. It shows the names of rebels, citizens, and families who were wiped out by the council just to keep their glass towers shining above the mud. But right at the top of the file, another name appears in bold letters: Lyra Vance.

Lyra stumbles back, shaking her head. No. That is a lie. My parents were council founders. They built this city.

They tried to stop the council, just like mine, I say, stepping closer to her. The council wiped your memory too, Lyra. They gave you a fake family, a fake past, and taught you how to scheme and manipulate so you would work for them without ever knowing the truth.

Lyra clutches her head with both hands, gasping for air as the realization hits her like a physical blow. All her cold plans, all her careful plots to take over the council from the inside, turn out to be nothing more than another trap built by the people she served.

They used me, she whispers, her voice breaking for the first time. Everything I did, the rebels I betrayed... it was all part of their plan.

Yes, I say quietly. Just like they used me.

Before Lyra can say another word, the floor beneath us gives a violent shudder.

A loud, piercing alarm blares through the entire glass tower, not the purple alarm of the core system, but a deep, crimson emergency alert that shakes the glass walls. The ceiling panels slide open, and a row of heavy automatic defense turrets drops down from above, their laser sights locking directly onto us.

Council Head Vane lets out a harsh, desperate laugh from the corner of the room, wiping a streak of blood from her lip.

You think you control the tower just because you overrode the front desk?" she sneers, her eyes wild with malice. "The core defense grid has a second fail-safe. If the system is breached by an unauthorized royal, the tower initiates total system purge."

On the main monitor, a countdown timer starts ticking down from sixty seconds in glowing red numbers.

59... 58... 57...

The whole tower is going to lock down and vent the upper floors into the atmosphere, Vane says, smiling a cruel, twisted smile. "You, the girl, and every secret in this city will freeze in the cold air before you even make it to the roof. You lose, Kian.

The automatic turrets power up, their barrels glowing with lethal red energy as they prepare to fire.

Lyra looks up from the floor, her eyes snapping back into focus. The shock is gone, replaced by a cold, dangerous fire that matches my own. She looks at the countdown timer, then looks at me.

We have less than a minute before the airlocks blow, Lyra says fast, her voice sharp and steady again. The main ventilation shaft behind the desk leads straight to the roof. If we get up there, we can override the purge from the master satellite dish.

I look at Lyra, then at the ticking red numbers on the screen. I know she might be scheming again. I know she might turn on me the second we reach the roof. But right now, we do not have a choice.

I raise both of my hands, letting the purple fire burst out with full force.

Let us go up, I say.

I thrust my hands forward, unleashing a massive wave of energy that shatters the automated turrets into a million pieces of burning metal just as the countdown hits thirty seconds.
