The white room smells of clean metal and cold air.
I sit up on the smooth metal table, rubbing my eyes against the harsh light. The dirt from the River City slums is completely gone. My clothes are not my old worn-out jacket anymore, but a plain gray uniform made of soft cotton. My hands are clean. The purple light that burned under my skin on the glass tower is entirely missing.
The man in the white coat stands a few feet away, looking down at his heavy metal tablet. He does not look like a cruel council head or a greedy rebel leader. He looks like a scientist doing a normal day of work.
Where is Lyra? I ask, my voice sounding rough in the quiet room.
The doctor looks up, tapping the screen with his finger. Subject Lyra Vance is in the recovery wing, Kian. Her memory reset is running right now. Just like yours. My chest tightens. I swing my legs over the side of the metal table and stand up, keeping my balance even though my head feels heavy and strange.
What are you talking about? I demand, taking a step toward him. River City was real. The council was real. The people in the slums were real.
None of it was real, Kian, the doctor says calmly, not showing any fear at all. He turns the tablet around so I can see the screen.
Bright blue lines and flashing charts cover the glass. It shows a map of a city, but the map looks like computer code, split into tiny squares and data streams.
River City is a virtual testing ground, the doctor explains, his voice steady. We needed to know how a human brain would react under extreme pressure, betrayal, and life-or-death stakes. We gave you a fabricated past, a fake aunt, and a fake rebellion. We wanted to see if your mind would choose to fight the system or join it.
I stare at the screen. Every memory I have, picking trash in the mud, running from elite guards, watching Aunt Elena die, trusting Lyra, and fighting Jax on the roof, feels completely real in my mind. Every drop of pain and anger I felt was sharp and true.
You made up all of that? I ask, my hands balling into tight fists at my sides. You made us live through that nightmare just for a test?
It is not just a test, the doctor replies, tapping the tablet again. It is the only way to prepare human minds for the new world outside this facility. Phase One is finished. You broke the core system, exactly as our algorithms predicted you would. But Phase Two is much harder. The doctor points to a heavy steel door on the other side of the room.
If you want to know who you really are, and if you want to find Lyra before her original memories are wiped out forever, you have to step through that door and start the real simulation.
I look at the steel door. My heart beats fast against my ribs. I spent my whole life in a fake city believing I was a poor trash picker, then a lost king, and then a rebel savior. Now I find out I am just a test subject in a laboratory.
And if I refuse? I ask, looking right into his eyes.
Then we reset your brain, erase your name, and send you back into Phase One as a background worker who knows nothing, the doctor says simply. You will live out a quiet, boring life in the digital slums, and you will never remember Lyra or anything else.
I think about Lyra. I think about the way she betrayed me, how she stood by my side on the roof, and how she fell into the white void right beside me. Even if her past was a lie written by a computer, my feelings for her were real.
I turn away from the doctor and walk straight toward the heavy steel door.
Kian, the doctor calls out behind me. The next world is not a simple city. The rules change completely.
I do not stop walking. I reach out and grab the cold metal handle of the door, pulling it open.
A blast of freezing wind hits my face, carrying the loud noise of clashing metal, roaring beasts, and the smell of blood and smoke. I step through the doorway into the bright light, and the heavy door slams shut behind me with a loud, final click.

The Choice of a Free Man
The red letters burn across the glass screen like fresh blood.SYSTEM OVERRIDE DETECTED. INITIATING PHASE TWO.My breath catches in my throat. I stare at the glowing words, my mind refusing to accept what I am seeing. We beat Council Head Vane. We stopped Jax and his rebels. We even opened the city gates so the people down in the slums could finally feel the sun on their faces. Everything was supposed to be over. What does that mean? Lyra asks, her voice tight with panic. She presses a hand against her injured shoulder, stepping up beside me to look at the monitor. We locked out the council's control grid. No one else has administrative access to this terminal. Before I can answer, the master satellite dish above our heads stops rotating. A loud, sharp hum fills the air, vibrating straight through the metal floorboards and into my shoes. The golden sunlight breaking through the clouds begins to fade, swallowed up by a sudden, unnatural wall of dark grey mist rolling in from the edges
The Fall from the Sky
The blue energy beam cuts through the air straight toward my chest. There is no time to duck. There is no time to think of a clever escape plan. I throw my hands out in front of me by pure instinct, and the purple light explodes from my palms with a blinding flash. The beam hits my wall of energy with a loud crack that shakes the metal platform beneath our feet. The force of the blast pushes me backward. My boots slide across the wet metal edge of the roof, and for a second, my heels hang over nothingness.Below us, hundreds of feet down, the dark slums of River City wait in the cold rain.Jax steps forward through the remaining smoke, his rifle still smoking from the shot. His face twists into an ugly sneer. He does not care about freeing the city or helping the poor people in the mud. He just wants the power for himself, and he is ready to throw anyone off the edge to get it.You should have stayed in the trash dump, kid, Jax says, raising his rifle for another shot. You were never
Race to the Roof
The countdown timer on the screen flashes red, burning the numbers into my mind.15... 14... 13...Move! Lyra shouts. She does not waste a single second. She dives behind the ruined desk and hits a hidden panel on the floor. A heavy metal hatch pops open, revealing a dark vertical shaft with a ladder leading straight up into the ceiling.I do not look back at Council Head Vane, who is still laughing from her corner as the automated security system starts to self-destruct around us. I grab the sides of the metal ladder and climb as fast as I can, my boots hitting the rungs with loud echoes. Lyra climbs right behind me, her hands moving with quick, practiced precision.Below us, the office fills with a thick white gas as the tower vents its airlocks to freeze the floor. The cold air bites at my face, but the purple light blazing from my hands keeps me warm. We climb through the dark shaft, moving past heavy layers of security wiring and humming cables until our heads break through a sec
The Core of the Tower
The glass desk under my hands cracks into a thousand tiny pieces.A loud wave of sound echoes through the high room, like a bell ringing inside a metal box. The white lights on the ceiling flicker and turn off. Every computer screen in the room goes dark for a second, then flashes back on with a bright purple glow.Council Head Vane stumbles backward, tripping over her own shoes and falling hard onto the clean white floor. Her face is pale with absolute panic. She points a shaking finger at me, unable to speak as the core system changes around us.What did you do? she gasps out, her voice tight with fear.I do not answer her. I look down at my hands. The purple light is not just shining on my skin anymore. It is flowing out of my fingers in thin streams of energy, connecting with the broken wires of the desk. The computer screens around the room start scrolling fast with long lines of text, numbers, and old files that the council tried to hide away forever.Lyra drops the heavy metal
Inside the Glass Tower
The cold metal cuffs clamp down hard around my wrists. I pull against them, but the heavy steel does not give an inch. Two guards grab my arms and drag me forward, their heavy boots slamming against the shiny white floor.I look up, and the view takes my breath away.We are standing inside the highest glass tower of River City. Down below, thousands of tiny lights twinkle in the muddy slums where I spent my whole life picking trash. Up here, the air smells clean and sweet, far away from the dirt and the rot. But there is no warmth in this place. The walls are made of clear glass, and the lights are bright and sharp like ice. They bring me down a long, wide hallway until we stop in front of a massive set of silver doors. The symbols carved into the metal match the ones on the heavy box LordValen gave me. This is the central vault. This is where the council rules the city from the shadows. The silver doors slide open with a soft hiss. The guards push me inside, and I stumble forward, ca
