The roar of the wind stops the second I step past the threshold.
I stand on a high metal balcony overlooking a massive, glowing city that stretches as far as my eyes can see. This place looks nothing like the dirty streets of River City. Towering glass skyscrapers pierce a purple sky, and bright neon ships fly between buildings on invisible highways. Alarms blare in the distance, and red warning lights pulse against the walls.
"Welcome to Phase Two, subject Kian," a flat, mechanical voice echoes from speakers mounted above the door. "Your survival timer has begun. You have twelve hours to reach the central sector before the sector locks down permanently."
I look down at my wrist. A bright red number glows on my skin: 11:59:59. It counts down second by second.
"Kian!"
I spin around at the sound of that familiar voice.
Lyra stands on a lower platform across a wide gap, wearing the same gray uniform as me. Her hair is messy, and her eyes are wide with panic. She looks around frantically, clutching her own wrist where a similar red timer ticks away.
"Kian, what is this place?" she calls out, her voice shaking slightly. "My head hurts. I remember River City, but... but the memories feel like a movie I watched instead of my actual life."
"They wiped your memory reset just like mine," I shout back, stepping closer to the edge of the metal balcony. "None of it was real, Lyra! The council, the slums, the rebellion—it was all a computer test created by the people running this facility!"
Lyra freezes. She looks down at her hands, her expression shifting from panic to a cold, calculating focus that I know too well. The warmth in her eyes vanishes, replaced by the sharp instincts of the survivor she was programmed to be.
"A test," she repeats quietly, her voice hardening. "Then the people watching us are right down there."
Before I can answer, the floor beneath Lyra's platform shakes violently. A loud mechanical grinding sound fills the air as the metal walkway detaches from the wall and begins to slide away into the dark chasm below.
"Lyra!" I shout, running toward the edge of my balcony.
"Don't just stand there, Kian!" she calls back, jumping across the widening gap without a moment of hesitation. She catches the edge of my platform with both hands, her fingers slipping against the smooth steel.
I slide across the floor and grab her wrists just as her grip gives out. I pull her up with everything I have, dragging her over the rail and onto the solid floor beside me. We both tumble onto the metal ground, breathing heavily.
"Thanks," she says, getting up quickly and dusting off her uniform. She does not look shaken at all. Her eyes scan the upper levels of the city, tracking the movement of flying drones circling above us. "If we stay here, the security systems will trap us in five minutes."
"How do you know that?" I ask, standing up to face her.
"Because I remember the layout," Lyra says, turning her sharp gaze toward me. "Even if the memories are fake, my tactical programming is still active. Someone designed us to survive this specific zone. And whoever built this game expects us to fight each other for the single exit pass."
My chest tightens. "An exit pass? For only one person?"
Lyra points to a glowing digital screen flashing on the wall across the plaza. It displays a leaderboard with our names and two new faces we have never seen before. At the bottom, flashing in bright red letters, are the words: SURVIVAL REQUIREMENT: ONLY ONE SUBJECT MAY LEAVE PHASE TWO.
We stare at the screen in silence. The rules of the test are clear. To get out of this simulation and find the real world, one of us has to betray the other.
Before either of us can speak, a heavy blast door at the far end of the plaza blows open with a deafening crash. Smoke pours into the hallway, and heavy footsteps echo against the floor.
A tall figure wearing heavy black armor steps out of the smoke, holding a pulsing energy rifle aimed straight at our heads.

The System Crash
Sparks burst from the broken console, and the screen goes completely dark.Director Vance jumps up from his chair on the video feed as his face turns red with anger. The smooth and polite look he wore just a second ago vanishes instantly."You stupid fool!" Vance shouts through the dead speakers before the connection cuts out completely. "You have no idea what you just destroyed!"The silver collar around Lyra's neck stops glowing with that dangerous red light. With a soft click, the lock pops open and falls to the floor. Lyra coughs, shaking her head as she pulls herself upright against the metal chair. Her hands are still bound behind her back, so I rush forward, grab the thick plastic bands, and snap them apart with the new strength the blue vial gave me.She rubs her wrists, taking a deep breath of air before looking up at me with her sharp eyes."That was reckless, Kian," she says, though a tiny hint of respect shows in her voice. "Destroying
The Blue Vial
Ten minutes is all I have before the clock runs out and Lyra pays the price for my hesitation.I stare at the small glass vial sitting inside the open black box. The blue liquid inside spins and bubbles, casting a strange glow against my face in the dark room. The note rests beside it, reminding me that Lyra is locked away in the upper tower while I am down here in the dirt.I pick up the vial and pull the rubber stopper out with my teeth. The liquid smells sweet like winter fruit, but my instincts tell me it is something much more dangerous. It could be poison designed to wipe my memory for good, or it could be a performance upgrade meant to push my body past human limits for the next trial.Either way, I do not have a choice.I tilt my head back and swallow the glowing
The Cage Test
The steel bars of the cage trap us in a cold, small space. Before I can react, Lyra swings the heavy energy rifle around, pressing the barrel hard against my chest. Her eyes are completely empty of the warmth we shared just moments ago. She is calculating every second, every move, and every option to ensure she is the one who walks out of this room alive."Do not make me do this, Kian," Lyra says, her voice steady and cold. "The exit pass only allows one biometric signature. If we stay in here, the gas will fill the cage in sixty seconds. One of us has to press the release override from the inside control box, and that means the other person stays behind."I look down at the energy rifle pointing at my heart. My hands are free, but my mind is spinning. I trusted her in the slums of River City. I trusted her when the

The Only Way Out
A red laser beam points straight at my chest from the barrel of the heavy gun.The armored guard in front of us does not say a word. He pulls the trigger without a second thought. A bolt of hot energy shoots across the hallway, missing my shoulder by inches and leaving a black scorch mark on the metal wall behind me."Move!" Lyra shouts, grabbing my arm and pulling me hard to the left.We dive behind a thick steel pillar just as another energy blast hits the ground where we were standing. Sparks fly everywhere, and the smell of burning metal fills the air. My heart beats fast against my ribs, but I do not have time to think about fear. The timer on my wrist keeps ticking down. We have less than twelve hours, and now we have armed guards trying to kill us before we even reach the first sector gate.
