The bitter night air tore through the damp fabric of Caleb’s t-shirt, turning his skin into a patchwork of goosebumps. Every step along the slick asphalt sounded like a wet sponge being crushed underfoot. Water squished inside his ruined leather shoes, forcing cold moisture between his toes with every stride.

He held his cracked phone tightly in his trembling palm, the screen glowing brightly against the dark backdrop of the empty city street. The numbers hadn't vanished. The text message from First Capital Bank was still sitting right at the top of his notifications feed, staring back at him in stark white digits: Available Balance: $10,000,012.45.

He checked his pocket, pulling out a torn paper receipt from his delivery shift six hours ago. His fingers shook so violently he nearly dropped it into a puddle. On the receipt, his real balance from yesterday was printed in faded ink: $12.45.

A heavy, shuddering breath escaped his lips, rising as a white plume of vapor in the cold air.

"Ten million..." he whispered, his voice catching in his throat. "It's real. The bank app isn't crashing. The legal email didn't bounce."

A sudden wave of exhaustion hit him, heavy and overwhelming. His body was still running on three hours of sleep, two years of relentless night shifts, and a stomach empty of everything except the faint, sting of the scalding onion soup Martha had thrown at his feet. But beneath the bone-deep fatigue, a small, stubborn spark was beginning to burn in his chest.

He wasn't going to collapse in a ditch. He wasn't going to freeze to death on the roadside while Chloe and Julian drank expensive champagne in a warm villa.

He needed to survive the night. And to survive, he needed shelter, warmth, and dry clothes.

Caleb turned down 5th Avenue, heading toward the bright, ambient glow of the city’s high-end commercial district. The luxury boutiques were usually closed at this hour, but a few flagships remained open late to accommodate elite private shoppers and midnight socialites.

Five blocks later, he stood beneath the gilded awning of Vanguard Tailors, a centuries-old bespoke suit house catering exclusively to politicians, corporate titans, and old-money aristocrats. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the showroom radiated opulent heat. Soft yellow light glinted off mahogany counters, plush velvet armchairs, and brass clothing racks hanging with hand-stitched wool coats.

Caleb looked down at himself. His shirt was clinging wetly to his ribs, stained dark gray near the hem from street mud and onion broth. His jeans were frayed and heavy with rainwater. His shoes were practically falling apart at the seams.

He pushed open the heavy brass-rimmed glass door. A soft, melodious chime echoed throughout the warm, cedar-scented room.

Inside, the heat hit Caleb like a velvet blanket, causing his chilled skin to sting instantly. He stood near the entrance mat, trying not to step forward and ruin the pristine, polished oak flooring.

Behind the marble reception desk stood a tall salesman in a three-piece charcoal suit. His hair was slicked back with military precision, and a silk handkerchief peeked neatly from his breast pocket. His name tag read Harrison - Senior Wardrobe Consultant.

Harrison looked up from a leather ledger. The moment his gaze swept over Caleb—from his dripping wet hair down to his mud-spattered, squeaking shoes—his welcoming smile vanished entirely. His lips curled into a tight, disgusted line.

"Hold it right there," Harrison said, his voice loud, sharp, and dripping with immediate condescension. He didn't even bother coming out from behind the desk. "You're in the wrong building, friend. The bus shelter is two blocks back."

Caleb cleared his throat, taking a small step onto the rug to keep his balance. "I need a dry change of clothes. A suit, a coat, shoes—anything you have ready to wear right now. I can pay."

Harrison let out a short, nasal snort, leaning his elbows on the polished marble desk. "Pay? Do you have any idea where you are? Our off-the-rack dress shirts start at twelve hundred dollars. A custom three-piece piece will run you five figures minimum. I don't know what kind of prank you think you're pulling, but I suggest you turn around before I call building security to drag you off the property."

[Ding!] [Contempt & Disrespect Detected from Target: Harrison.] [Converting Disrespect into System Points...] [Received: +400 System Points!]

A subtle, pleasant warmth blossomed at the base of Caleb's spine as the notification flashed invisibly across his eyes. The ambient cold in his bones receded just a fraction more. The System wasn't just a digital bank account; it was actively absorbing the malice of the people around him and converting it into vitality.

Caleb didn't yell. He didn't raise his voice. For two years, he had been trained by the Vance family to swallow his pride, but tonight, he had nothing left to lose and ten million reasons to demand respect.

"I didn't ask for the price, Harrison," Caleb said quietly, his dark eyes fixing on the salesman with a steady, unblinking glare. "I asked for dry clothes. Bring out a suit in my size, or ring up whatever is on that display mannequin right there."

Harrison’s face flushed a deep, angry red. He snapped his ledger shut with a loud thwack. "Listen to me, you ragged bum! You're dripping dirty rainwater onto vintage Italian hardwood! You smell like stale soup and exhaust fumes! If you don't step out of those doors in five seconds—"

"Ring it up," Caleb interrupted, stepping forward and pulling his cracked phone from his pocket. He pointed at the full ensemble displayed on the glass mannequin near the counter: a dark charcoal cashmere-blend suit, a crisp white Egyptian cotton shirt, a silk tie, and a pair of hand-crafted leather Oxford shoes.

Harrison sneered, crossing his arms over his chest. "That floor display is imported from Milan. The entire set comes to seven thousand eight hundred dollars after tax. You want me to ring it up? Fine. Touch your little plastic card to the terminal so I can laugh when it declines and watch security throw you into the rain."

Harrison aggressively slammed a wireless payment terminal onto the glass counter, tapping the screen with heavy fingers to punch in the total: $7,800.00.

"Go on," Harrison mocked, gesturing to the machine with a fake, theatrical bow. "Show me your fortune, delivery boy."

Caleb didn't hesitate. He opened his banking app, brought up the contactless payment token for his First Capital account, and held the cracked screen against the terminal's reader.

Beep.

Harrison smirked, leaning in to watch the red "Declined" screen pop up.

Processing...

The machine paused for two long, agonizing seconds. Then, a crisp, high-pitched chime sounded from the speaker.

APPROVED.

A long, white paper receipt began feeding out from the top of the terminal, rustling softly in the quiet showroom.

Harrison’s smirk completely shattered. His eyes bulged as he stared at the green text flashing on the terminal screen. He reached out with a trembling hand, grabbing the receipt and reading the bold print at the bottom: AUTH CODE: 902148 - PAYMENT SUCCESSFUL.

[Transaction Confirmed!] [Amount Spent: $7,800.00 USD.] [100x Cashback Rule Triggered!]

[Processing Cashback...] [$780,000.00 USD Has Been Deposited Into Your Primary Account!]

Buzz.

Caleb felt his phone vibrate in his grip. Shifting his gaze down, he saw the text pop up over his banking screen:

NOTIFICATION: First Capital Bank. Deposit: $780,000.00 USD. Available Balance: $10,780,012.45.

A quiet, profound stillness washed over Caleb. The last lingering doubt in his mind vanished into thin air. Every dollar he spent was returning to him multiplied by a hundred. The world's arrogance was literally funding his ascension.

He looked back up at Harrison. The salesman was standing behind the counter, pale as a sheet, sweating through his pristine collar. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.

"I... I..." Harrison stammered, his voice dropping two octaves as all his bravado evaporated. "Sir... I... the system... it went through."

"I know," Caleb said smoothly, his tone devoid of anger, which made it ten times more intimidating. "Where is the dressing room?"

"R-right this way, sir! Immediately!" Harrison practically scrambled around the counter, nearly tripping over his own polished shoes as he rushed to unlock the VIP fitting suite at the back of the store. "Please, allow me to carry the garments for you! I apologize for the... the misunderstanding! I had no idea a gentleman of your stature—"

"Save it," Caleb said, taking the clothes off the rack himself. "Get me a towel and a bottle of warm water."

"Yes, sir! Right away, sir!" Harrison bowed so low his nose nearly touched his knees, scuttling away toward the staff lounge as if his life depended on it.

[Ding!] [Shock & Fear Detected from Target: Harrison.] [Received: +600 System Points!]

Ten minutes later, Caleb stood in front of the full-length gilded mirror inside the fitting room.

The transformation was striking. The charcoal cashmere suit hugged his frame perfectly, accentuating his broad shoulders and lean waist. The white cotton shirt felt soft and warm against his clean skin, replacing the icy chill of the rain with pure luxury. The hand-stitched leather shoes fit comfortably, completely insulating his feet.

He stared at his reflection. The dark circles under his eyes were still there, telling the story of two years of endless humiliation and sleepless nights. But behind his eyes, the hollow, beaten shadow of the old Caleb Vance was gone. In his place stood a man holding millions of dollars and absolute power over the people who had crushed him.

He stepped out of the fitting room. Harrison was waiting outside, holding a silver tray with a warm linen towel and a crystal glass of sparkling water, trembling like a leaf.

"Sir... is the fit satisfactory?" Harrison squeaked nervously.

Caleb picked up the glass of water, took a slow sip, and set it back down on the tray. "Wrap up my old clothes in a bag. Throw the shoes in the trash."

"Consider it done, sir!" Harrison nodded frantically. "Is there... is there anything else I can assist you with tonight? A coat? Accessories? A watch?"

Caleb looked at his phone screen. It was 1:30 AM. He had six and a half hours before the emergency board meeting at Cole Logistics—the multi-million-dollar logistics firm owned by Julian Cole's family, which now legally belonged entirely to Caleb.

He wasn't going to show up to his first corporate takeover in a taxi.

"Where is the nearest luxury automotive showroom that handles late-night VIP acquisitions?" Caleb asked, buttoning his jacket.

Harrison’s eyes went wide. "Aura Motors, sir! They keep a midnight valet and sales manager on call for elite clients down on Grand Avenue. It's only four blocks from here!"

"Good," Caleb said, turning toward the exit. "Keep the change on the receipt."

Caleb pushed open the heavy glass doors and stepped back out onto the avenue. The rain was still falling, but as the cool drops touched his face, he didn't shiver anymore. Wrapped in fine cashmere and backed by an infinite fortune, Caleb Vance walked into the dark city night, ready to claim his empire.
