The sitting room of the Styles mansion smelled of expensive jasmine and cold silence.

Reginald Styles sat at the head of the table, his jaw tight, his fingers drumming against the armrest. He hadn't spoken in five minutes, and the weight of his silence pressed down on everyone in the room.

Giselle broke it first.

"Father, this is absurd." She tossed her platinum hair over her shoulder, her designer heels tapping impatiently against the floor. "You can't actually bring him here. What will people say?"

Evangeline folded her arms, her painted lips curling into a sneer. "The media already had their fun mocking us when that wretched woman went to prison. Now we're supposed to parade her replacement through our front door? He grew up in the countryside, Father. He probably doesn't even know which fork to use at dinner."

Beatrice, the youngest, added her voice with a petulant whine. "I won't share a roof with some... some farmer. My friends will never let me live it down. They already think we're a circus after the switch scandal."

Reginald's drumming fingers stopped. His eyes swept over his daughters with cold impatience. "Are you finished?"

"No, I'm not finished." Giselle stood up, pacing. "Why can't we find another solution? Pay him off. Send him abroad. Give him a house in another city. Why does he have to live here?"

"Because the cameras are watching," Evangeline said bitterly. "Mother made sure of that before she locked herself in her room."

Indeed, Vivica Styles had not come down. She had made her stance clear that morning when she told Reginald: "That boy is not my son. I raised Jonathan. If you bring that country rat into my home, I will not acknowledge him."

Jonathan, seated quietly beside Reginald, let the silence stretch just long enough.

Then he lowered his head. His shoulders sagged slightly. His voice came out soft, wavering, laced with a sadness so perfectly measured it could have won him an Oscar.

"Father..."

Reginald turned to him, frowning. "What?"

Jonathan let out a trembling breath. He placed a gentle hand on Reginald's arm, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I've had twenty-three years of your love. Twenty-three years of this home. Of these sisters who cherish me." He looked up at Giselle, then Evangeline, then Beatrice—each glance lingering with aching gratitude. "How can I stand here and take that away from Anthony? He's your blood. He deserves a chance."

Giselle's face crumbled. "Jonathan, don't say that!"

"I mean it." Jonathan's voice cracked. He squeezed Reginald's arm. "Dad has to do this. After all, Anthony is his biological son. I'm just... I'm just the one you raised." He let out a self-deprecating laugh. "It's only right that he takes my place. I'll pack my things tonight."

Beatrice shot to her feet. "You will not! You're our brother. He's a stranger!"

Evangeline's eyes blazed with fury. "Father, you can't possibly allow this. Jonathan has been nothing but loyal. If you send him away to make room for that... that impostor from the countryside..."

"I won't be sending Jonathan anywhere," Reginald snapped.

Jonathan's lip quivered. He looked at the floor, shaking his head slowly. "You're all too kind to me. Truly. But Anthony is coming, and I don't want to make this harder for him. Maybe if I'm not here, he'll feel more welcome."

He had done it.

Perfectly.

In three sentences, he had positioned himself as the selfless martyr, painted the sisters into a protective frenzy, and ensured that when Anthony walked through that door, he would be greeted not just with disdain but with hatred.

Reginald sighed, rubbing his temples. "Jonathan, you're not leaving. The media would tear us apart if the 'fake heir' vanished right as the real one appeared. You stay. He stays. This is a performance and nothing more. Once the news cycle forgets us, he gets a small apartment and we move on."

Jonathan looked up, his eyes shimmering. "If that's what you think is best, Father. I trust you."

He smiled, warm and forgiving.

But behind that smile, something cold flickered.

Anthony Styles. Jonathan had read the dossier. Raised in a village. Worked manual labor. Barely finished high school. A nobody.

Jonathan had already won. He had the family's love. The inheritance. The connections. And this poor country boy was about to walk into a house where everyone despised him before they'd even heard his voice.

Let him come. Let him try to claim what's mine. He'll be broken within a month.

Outside, the purr of an engine cut through the tension.

The family fell silent.

A sleek black town car rolled up the long driveway, coming to a stop before the grand entrance. The rear door opened, and a young man stepped out.

Anthony Styles.

He wore worn-out boots, faded jeans, and a simple grey jacket that looked like it cost less than a single one of Giselle's earrings. A battered duffle bag hung from his shoulder.

He looked up at the mansion.

Three stories building. Gigantic windows. A fountain in the courtyard.

Anthony didn't blink. He didn't gawk. His face was a still, unreadable mask.

So this is it, he thought. The cage where the real Anthony died crying and alone.

He'd read the novel cover to cover—forced by his writer ex-girlfriend who had based the pathetic male lead on some drama she'd seen online. The original Anthony had walked through these gates trembling, desperate for approval, praying for a scrap of love.

He'd gotten nothing but contempt, and eventually, a cold gutter in the rain.

Anthony adjusted his duffle bag and took a step forward.

An elderly man in a black suit emerged from the front doors. The butler—Reginald's loyal shadow, and in the book, the man who personally threw Anthony out during a rainstorm three months from now.

The butler's eyes swept over Anthony's clothes with undisguised disdain. His nose twitched.

"You're the one from the countryside," the butler said flatly.

Anthony met his gaze. "That's me."

The butler's lip curled. "They're waiting for you in the sitting room. Don't keep the master waiting. And..." He glanced pointedly at Anthony's dusty boots. "Try not to touch the walls. The rugs are imported."

Anthony smiled. A slow, cold, knowing smile that made the butler pause for just a fraction of a second.

"Wouldn't dream of it."

He walked past the butler, through the grand doors, into the marble foyer, and toward the sitting room where his blood family sat, waiting to tear him apart.

Jonathan thinks he's so clever, Anthony mused as his footsteps echoed through the hall. Playing the martyr. Turning the sisters against me before I even arrive. Waiting for the lottery numbers to drop. Planning to bankrupt the old man.

Too bad I've already bought that winning ticket.

Too bad I know exactly how this story ends.

And too bad for all of them, I'm not the victim they're expecting.

He pushed open the sitting room doors.
