Day of the graduation ceremony.

Vincent Li stood in front of the mirror in his uncle’s apartment. His fingers trembled as he adjusted the bow tie at his throat. The tuxedo he was wearing was the most expensive thing he had ever owned. He saved up to three months of his allowance to buy it, so he could look good for Leena.

It’s worth it, he told himself as he smoothed the fabric over his chest. Today is the last day. After today, no more maltreatment.

And most importantly—today, he would stand beside Leena Zhou.

He checked his phone. There were no messages from her yet. His thumb hovered, hesitating, then he locked the screen.

She’ll be waiting, he thought. He needed to rush to her house fast so he won't keep her waiting too long.

He hired a cab that he could barely pay for to take him there.

When the cab stopped in front of her house, Vincent paid more than he should have just to avoid an argument. His wallet felt painfully light as he stepped out, straightened his jacket, and rang the bell.

The door opened almost immediately.

“Ah, Xiao Vincent,” Leena’s mother said warmly, her face lighting up. Madam Zhou Lanfen had always been kind to him. “You look so handsome today.”

“Thank you, Auntie Zhou,” Vincent said, bowing slightly out of habit. His heart thudded. “Is Leena ready?”

Madam Zhou’s smile vanished.

“Oh,” she said gently. “Leena already left.”

Vincent blinked. “Left?”

“Yes. She went to the graduation ceremony earlier,” she replied, concern flickering in her eyes. “She said she had… another date.”

The words didn’t make sense to him. Was she playing a prank on him?

“Another… date?” Vincent repeated softly.

Madam Zhou hesitated, clearly uncomfortable. “I thought you knew.”

Vincent forced a smile that felt like it might crack his face in two. He already felt awkward and didn't want to worsen the situation.

“Yes. Of course. I just—wanted to be sure.”

She nodded. “Take care, Xiao Vincent.”

He felt anxious and confused as he climbed back into the cab.

“Jiade College ” he said, to the driver, his voice hoarse.

His mind raced as the car moved. Leena had another date? With who? Why didn’t she tell him any of these? He could have used his bicycle to get to school but he wasted money on a cab just to impress her.

Maybe there was an explanation. There had to be. Leena wasn’t cruel. She wasn’t like the others.

He clung to that belief as the cab pulled up to the glowing entrance of the university.

When he stepped inside, reality crashed down on him all at once.

The hall was dazzling—crystal lights, marble floors, silk dresses and tailored suits that probably cost more than his uncle earned in a year.

As Vincent walked forward, the students turned to look at him. Then they started talking.

“Isn’t that the broke rat?”

“How did he even get a tux?”

“I'm sure he borrowed it.”

“Thank goodness that Leena has finally come to her senses.”

Vincent ignored them and kept walking, his eyes scanned the room for Leena.

The music started and couples filled the dance floor. Vincent searched frantically, dread creeping up his spine.

Then the music finished playing and suddenly students started clapping.

Vincent’s gaze went to the center of the dance floor.

He saw Leena there, wearing a shimmering dress. He was happy and immediately went to meet her but then paused in shock.

She was suddenly kissing someone.

He went closer to see who it was and his heart sank.

She was with Xian Meng. The one responsible for making his six years in Jiade College a living hell.

Vincent stumbled forward, it felt like his heart was being crushed slowly, deliberately.

“No,” he whispered.

People cheered louder for them. Leena laughed when she pulled away from Xian, her hand still resting on his chest.

Vincent reached them before he realized his legs had moved.

“Leena,” he said, his voice breaking despite himself. “What… what is this?”

She turned to him. There was no ounce of guilt or remorse in her gaze.

Only irritation.

“Vincent,” she said flatly. “You’re causing a scene.”

“Causing a scene?” His hands shook. “You said—you said you’d come with me.”

She scoffed, fingers brushing the necklace. “Do you even know how much this necklace costs?” she asked coldly. “This necklace alone could buy your entire life.”

Each word cut him deeper than the last. He wanted the ground to open up and swallow him.

“Xian bought it for me,” she continued. “He can give me the life I deserve. Not... this.”

She gestured at him dismissively.

“You’re too broke,” she said. “And I need a man who can take care of me.”

Vincent took a step closer, pain flooding his chest. “How could you do this to me? After everything—”

Xian Meng stepped between them, sneering. “Watch your mouth, poor trash.”

He then turned to his lackeys, Hao and Wei.

“Throw him out." he said to them. "I don’t want to smell poverty in here.”

They grabbed Vincent, roughly dragging him out.

The other students laughed at him and called him names.

“Poor leech!”

“Did he really think he belonged here?”

Vincent didn’t fight. He couldn’t. His body felt weak, his mind numb as they dragged him toward the exit. He caught one last glimpse of Leena—laughing, leaning into Xian as if he had never existed.

The doors slammed shut behind him.

He stood outside the gates of Jiade College and for a long moment, Vincent said nothing.

Then he pulled out his phone.

He dialed a number he rarely called.

It rang once.

“Uncle,” Vincent said calmly when the call connected, his voice steady in a way it had never been before. “The graduation ceremony just ended.”.

“I’m ready,” Vincent continued. “I’m ready to take over.”

There was a pause.

Then his uncle replied; “Come home.”

Vincent ended the call.

Within minutes, the sound of engines filled the street. Black limousines rolled in first, followed by sleek Benzes that lined at the gate of Jiade College.

Students lingering nearby froze, mouths falling open.

Vincent didn’t look back at the school.

He walked forward as doors opened for him, entering into the nearest limousine without hesitation.

Xian leaned back, crossing his arms, a faint sneer playing on his lips—as if old habits refused to die. Vincent noticed everything. The way Xian avoided looking directly at him. The way his father studied him with thinly veiled impatience. The way none of them apologized. Not yet. Meng Jianhua cleared his throat. “President Vincent, thank you for agreeing to meet us.” Vincent didn’t respond. The silence stretched, uncomfortable and heavy. “We believe there has been a misunderstanding,” Meng Jianhua continued. “Our company has suffered sudden setbacks—” “Because I made it suffer,” Vincent said calmly. Xian’s head snapped up. “You—” Vincent’s eyes cut to him, sharp and cold. Xian fell silent instantly. Vincent leaned forward slightly. “Let’s not pretend this is business fate. This is me.” Meng Jianhua stiffened. “You’re being emotional.” Vincent smiled faintly. “You raised a son who thought cruelty was entertainment. That’s emotional.” he said coldly. Xian s

  • 12. The meeting

Dinner at his uncle’s estate was quieter than it had ever been. The meal they had was the kind of meal Vincent used to dream about when he was younger. Now, the food sat untouched in front of him. Across the table, Gaius watched him closely. His uncle looked different these days. The deep lines of stress that once lived on his face had softened. His shoulders were relaxed, his movements unhurried. For the first time in years, Gaius looked like a man who could finally rest. Vincent had given him that peace. “You’ve done well,” Gaius said at last, breaking the silence. His voice was calm, steady. “The hospitals are thriving. The board doesn’t question your decisions anymore. I sleep better knowing the empire is in your hands.” Vincent nodded slightly but didn’t smile. Praise no longer warmed him the way it once did. Gaius studied him for another moment, then sighed and set his wine glass down. “I also heard about Meng Clothing.” Vincent’s fingers tightened around his c

The next morning, Vincent finished his hospital rounds earlier than usual. The surgeries had gone smoothly. Too smoothly. Whenever that happened, something always followed. His phone vibrated on the desk behind him. Once. Twice. Then again. He walked back to the desk and looked down at the screen. Leena. What did she want from him now? Another vibration. A message preview appeared. Vincent, please… I need to talk to you. He stared at it without opening it. His fingers hovered over the screen, then pulled back. Six months ago, he would have answered before the phone finished vibrating. Six months ago, her messages had been the center of his world. He would have dropped everything—sleep, pride, dignity—just to hear her voice. Now, he locked the screen and placed the phone face down. A knock sounded at the door. “Come in,” Vincent said. “A woman named Leena Zhou has been calling the hospital, saying she wants to speak to you,” Sian added. “She also calle

  • 10. Meng Clothing

Vincent arrived at VG Enterprises just before nine in the morning. VG Enterprises was his uncle’s company headquarters. He took care of the business here when he had time but his main focus was the hospital and he would have been there by now if he didn't have important business to take care of here. When he got in, all the staff paused what they were doing and stood at his beck and call. “Good morning, Young Master.” They greeted urgently. “Welcome, sir.” “Everything is ready.” Vincent stepped onto the polished marble floor, his shoes echoing faintly. The smell of clean air, coffee, and restrained urgency filled the space. Employees moved quickly but carefully, like people walking on thin ice—efficient, alert, and eager not to make mistakes. He felt it immediately. Control. Not the fragile kind he had pretended to have in school by keeping his head down, but real control—the kind that made people adjust their lives the moment you entered a room. His personal a

  • 9. Valencrest

Vincent almost didn’t attend the ball. But here he was, dressed in a tailored black tuxedo that screamed aura and confidence. Crystal lights spilled from tall arched windows. Music floated into the night air, soft and elegant. Valets moved with practiced grace, opening doors for men and women dressed in wealth so effortless it looked natural on them. Vincent stepped out. For a brief moment, he felt eyes shift toward him—not mocking, not curious in the way they once had been, but assessing. Measuring. Good, he thought. Let them wonder. Vincent moved slowly, deliberately, allowing himself to be introduced by some his uncle’s acquaintances. Some women tilted their heads slightly, wanting to get to know him. They were all curious about him but he wasn't interested. He observed more than he spoke. This world was not new to him—but this was the first time he stood in it openly, without fear. Then he saw her. Leena stood near the center of the room, her hand looped poss

  • 8. The Governor’s Son

He leaned back in the high-backed leather chair, fingers steepled beneath his chin as afternoon light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office. He had finished rounds hours ago, yet the weight of the day still clung to him. Every patient he touched carried a story, and some stories refused to stay behind when he walked away. The report on his desk detailed surgical outcomes from the past week. Zero fatalities. Zero complications. Results that bordered on miraculous. A knock came, brisk and professional. “Enter,” Vincent said. His PA, Jian stepped inside, tablet in hand, expression sharpened by urgency. “Sir, we have an incoming case. Private admission.” Vincent’s instincts stirred. “How severe is it?” “Extreme. Unexplained. And… political.” Vincent now gave Jian his full attention. “How political?” “The governor’s only child.” “Take me there,” Vincent said. Security flooded the corridor outside the pediatric ICU. Armed men stood rigid, eyes s
