Divorce?

The word rang in Logan’s ears like a slap.

How come?

Charlotte and he had been a loving couple.

Why would she suddenly agree to divorce?

Barbara must be lying!

Logan jumped into a cab, his thoughts spiraling.

Ten minutes later, he stormed into their modest home.

Almost immediately, he saw his mother-in-law Barbara, and a young man that he had never seen before, lounging arrogantly on his couch.

The unfamiliar man was impeccably dressed, and wearing a luxury wristband—his outfit alone was easily worth over a million.

The moment Barbara spotted Logan, her face lit up and her smile turned venomous.

She scolded, “Oh, finally! The deadbeat arrives. Hurry up and sign the divorce papers!”

However, Logan ingnored Barbara’s words entirely.

He looked up at the unfamiliar man and asked coldly, “May I know who this is?”

“You fool, don’t you know who Mr Liam Hayes is? He is the Chief Operating Officer of Rhine Corporation, the most renowned powerhouse conglomerate in Elleville.”

“He earns a million a month and is the perfect husband we've found for Charlotte! Sign the divorce papers now, and Charlotte can be with him!”

Barbara threw the divorce agreement across the table.

So this was Liam Hayes?

Logan had heard the name several times before.

Grandma Sullivan and Barbara had mentioned it again and again, hoping that Charlotte would divorce Logan to marry this man.

In their eyes, a union with the Hayes family wasn’t just a social upgrade—it was a strategic masterstroke.

They also believed that Charlotte's marriage to a Chief Officer at Rhine Corporation, the largest conglomerate in Elleville, would open doors to valuable business connections, boosting their family business and granting them unrivaled access to elite circles in the city.

“You trash, Charlotte is already packing her bags. Don’t you dare idle and waste our time!” Barbara urged impatiently.

Logan clenched his jaw, sure that Barbara was only putting up a show.

There was no way Charlotte could divorce him.

He stepped forward, his voice calm but firm.

“I don’t believe you. Charlotte would never choose this. Not now. Not ever! I know her.”

Barbara scoffed, pointing the divorce papers.

“You think this is a joke? Look at it for yourself then. She already signed!”

Logan's eyes scanned the sheet and almost immediately, his stomach turned cold.

There it was—Charlotte Sullivan’s signature. Elegant, precise, and unmistakably hers!

He stared at it in disbelief, a wave of sorrow flooding his heart.

She had signed it. But why?!

Barbara’s voice pierced through his thoughts.

“Stop staring like a fool and just sign your own part."

"Charlotte’s moving out of this stink hole with Liam. She’s ready for a new life. You should be grateful she even stayed this long!”

But Logan wasn’t listening anymore.

Had he misjudged Charlotte?

Was she giving up him and their daughter?

Meanwhile, Liam took one look at Logan’s plain clothes and sneered.

“I thought Charlotte the beauty would be with someone impressive, but it turns out she’s stuck with a useless freeloader like you. How bizzare! You’re not worthy of her!”

“Get lost! You’re not invited!” Logan snapped.

“This is between Charlotte and me—none of your damn business! You bastard!”

Used to being respected and admired from his high-ranking position, Liam had never been yelled at like this.

“If it wasn’t for Elder Mrs Sullivan begging and Charlotte waiting for me to marry her, do you think I’d enter this asshole you call a house?”

Furious, Liam laughed mockingly.

“And in case you don’t know, Elysian Bloom is already on the verge of bankruptcy. With just one word, I can greenlight a hundred-million-dollar deal and save Charlotte’s company. But you? You’re just a worthless trash. What can you possibly do?!”

Logan’s eyes gleamed with a chilling light.

Liam’s words reminded him of all the insults and contempt he’d suffered from the Sullivan family.

It was the same venom, the same mockery.

“You’d better sign the papers and obediently hand over your wife!”

Seeing that Logan remained silent, Liam assumed he was backing down and decided to press further.

However ...

With a swift kick, Logan sent Liam sprawling to the floor.

The entire Rhine Corporation now belonged to him.

And yet a mere Chief Operating Officer in his company dared to insult him and his wife?

Charlotte adjusted the navy scarf in the mirror near the entryway, her movements calm, deliberate. The silk caught the morning light, almost defiant in its familiarity.Logan watched from across the room.“They’re watching for deviation,” he said quietly. “Change your routine and they’ll log it.”“So I don’t change it.”“Not yet.”Charlotte picked up her handbag. “You’re going to the office?”“Yes.”“You canceled meetings.”“I did.”She gave him a knowing look. “So you’ll be there… doing nothing.”“Publicly.”A faint smile touched her lips. “And privately?”Logan slipped his phone into his pocket. “Privately, I’ll find the pillar.”They stepped outside together. The air felt normal. Birds in the trees. Distant traffic. Stillness disguised as peace.Charlotte entered her car first. Logan leaned slightly toward her window before she closed it.“If anyone approaches you directly—”“I disengage,” she finished calmly.“And?”“And I call you.”He nodded once. She drove off at her usual time

The question hit Logan like an insult wrapped in mockery, sharp enough to sting and deliberate enough to linger. It wasn’t merely what was being offered—it was the presumption behind it, the assumption that he could be toyed with, manipulated into doubt by a voice on the other end of a line. “So,” the man repeated smoothly, his tone unhurried, savoring the moment, “would you like to speak with Charlotte? At least then you’d be certain she’s really with me.” For a split second, Logan said nothing. His silence wasn’t uncertainty—it was restraint. The kind forged through years of control, years of learning when to speak and when to wait. Then the fury came. Not loud. Not reckless. Sharp. Controlled. Far more dangerous than shouting. “You must think I’m a fool,” Logan said coldly, each word falling with precision. “Do you really believe I can be deceived so cheaply?” The man chuckled, clearly amused, as though Logan’s resistance only enhanced the game. “I believe you’re human, Logan

The drive home was quiet. Not tense—just heavy with thought.Charlotte sat beside him, her gaze forward, fingers loosely intertwined in her lap. The city lights passed over her face in shifting gold and shadow. Logan kept his eyes on the road, but his mind was nowhere near the asphalt beneath the tires. He was reconstructing everything. The call. The timing. The digital spikes. The holding company name on that tablet. It wasn’t random. It was strategic.“They wanted to measure you,” Charlotte said softly, breaking the silence.Logan didn’t look at her. “They did.”“And?”“And now I know how they measure.”She glanced at him. “You’re not going to sleep tonight, are you?”“No.”She gave a faint, knowing smile. “I didn’t think so.”When they pulled into the driveway, the house looked the same as it had hours ago. Calm. Silent. Perfectly composed. But Logan no longer saw it as a home.He saw it as a monitored environment. He stepped out first, scanning instinctively. No unusual vehicles.

The private lounge was quieter than the main floor, separated by a paneled divider and heavy velvet curtains that muted the jazz drifting in from the bar. The lighting was lower here, more intimate, casting long shadows across polished wood and leather chairs.Logan remained standing.Charlotte sat slowly, her posture composed but no longer carefree. The man took his time lowering himself into the chair opposite them, as though he had orchestrated every second of this moment.Logan’s gaze never left him.“You said you had information,” Logan began, his voice calm but edged with steel. “Start talking.”The man folded his hands loosely in front of him. “Straight to business. I respect that.”Charlotte glanced at Logan briefly. The moment Evelyn’s words settled in the air—heavy, final, and immovable—Jessica felt something inside her quietly collapse. There was no sudden outburst, no sharp cry. It was the slow, hollow sensation of something vital giving way, like a structure that had been standing for years finally realizing it had no foundation left. Alexander. Not Brandon. No matter what. The words echoed in her mind, repeating themselves with cruel persistence. For several seconds, Jessica remained where she stood, staring at her mother as though she were seeing her for the first time. The woman before her no longer looked like a parent caught between concern and control. Evelyn Marion looked resolved—coldly, unwaveringly resolved—the kind of resolve that shut out reason, dismissed evidence, and erased any possibility of compromise. Jessica swallowed hard. Her throat felt tight, her chest constricted, as though the air in the room had grown heavier. The strength that had carried her through the confro
