Charlotte’s head pounded as she regained consciousness. Her limbs were sore, and her wrists burned where the ropes had chafed her skin raw.

The room was dimly lit, damp, and smelled of mold and dust. Cold concrete pressed against her back as she blinked at the shadows hovering around her.

The five men stood there, murmuring in low voices. One of them approached her and yanked her upright. Her blouse was torn, her skirt crumpled, and fear surged through her chest like a wildfire.

“Please,” she rasped, her voice barely audible. “You don’t have to do this. I can pay you. I have money—just name the price.”

The man sneered. “You think this is about money now?”

“I’m a married woman,” she cried. “I have a family. My husband—he’ll come looking for me. Please, I beg you.”

One of them chuckled coldly. “You should’ve been dead already. Consider this mercy.”

Charlotte’s heart sank.

One of the men stepped forward. “Let’s have good fun!”

He grabbed her arm, but Charlotte jerked away, mustering eve

Charlotte was still smiling faintly from hearing that Chloe was alive when her phone lit up again. The number on the screen was unfamiliar. She hesitated, her thumb hovering over the green button. But before she could answer, the call ended.A second later, her phone buzzed again—this time, a text message. Her breath caught as she read it:> Warn your husband to stay away from whatever involves his family, unless he wants to die. That goes for you and your daughter too.Charlotte’s fingers trembled around the phone. The words seemed to pulse on the screen, each one seeping into her chest like ice. Someone knew about Chloe. Someone knew about Logan. And now… someone was threatening their lives. Her first instinct was to call Logan immediately, but she stopped herself. Her mind was racing. If she told him now, he would come storming back, reckless and furious, and with Chloe’s condition, the last thing they needed was more chaos.Still, fear gnawed at her. Whoever sent that message kn

Logan felt his chest tighten as the doctor’s words echoed in his mind. Vegetable for life. The phrase didn’t belong in any sentence describing his little girl.“No,” he said firmly, his voice thick with defiance. “That’s not possible. My daughter will not spend the rest of her life trapped in her own body. I don’t care what it takes—I’ll make sure Chloe is fine… and normal again.”The doctor’s sympathetic expression didn’t change, but Logan barely noticed. His mind was already racing through possibilities—specialists, overseas treatments, experimental therapies. He was prepared to fight the world if that was what it took. Before he could speak again, his phone began to ring. The name flashing across the screen made him pause. Charlotte. He answered immediately. “Charlotte.”Her voice came through the line, strained and sorrowful. “Logan… about Chloe… Did you—did you find her body?”Logan was silent for a long moment. He could hear Charlotte’s breathing on the other end, uneven and

The men moved toward Logan, their heavy boots thudding against the floor like war drums. Their eyes glinted with malicious intent, and their hands curled into fists as they prepared to pry Chloe from his arms. One of them, a broad-shouldered brute with a scar across his jaw, stepped forward first.“Give us the girl,” he snarled, his voice low and threatening.Logan’s grip on Chloe tightened. She hung limp in his arms, her pale face framed by strands of hair matted to her cheeks. He could feel the faint warmth of her body, but her stillness gnawed at his soul. These men would not touch her—not while he was still breathing. The first man lunged. Logan shifted his weight, his eyes narrowing. In one swift movement, he twisted aside, using the attacker’s own momentum to throw him headlong into the wall. The sickening thud was followed by a groan as the man crumpled to the ground. The second man didn’t hesitate. He swung a heavy punch aimed at Logan’s ribs, but Logan ducked and drove h

Logan’s hands trembled as he searched the cold bodies in the first upstairs room. His eyes scanned each face—one after another.None of them belonged to Chloe. Relief barely had time to settle before dread rushed in to take its place. If she’s not here… where is she?He pulled back from the room, his boots thudding against the hallway floor as he moved to the next door. The second room was empty—just dust, cobwebs, and an old wardrobe. The third held only crates stacked in careless piles. When he reached the fourth door, something in his gut twisted. He pushed it open slowly, and his breath caught in his throat. There—on a bed in the middle of the room—lay Chloe. Her small frame was still, her face pale under the dim light. She looked lifeless, almost like one of the bodies in the first room.“Chloe!” Logan’s voice cracked as he rushed forward. He dropped to his knees beside the bed, leaning over her. His hands cupped her cheeks, warm but frighteningly limp.“Baby, it’s Dad,” he w

Logan’s steps crunched on the gravel as he closed the gap between himself and Kent who was standing on the front porch.Kent’s eyes narrowed in suspicion with his voice rising to a shout. “What the hell are you doing in my house, Logan? And what did you just do to my dogs? They’ve never shut up for anyone!”Logan didn’t answer his question. His tone was ice. “I need to see my daughter, Chloe. You’d better produce her at once!”Kent’s expression hardened into defiance. “Look, fool. I don’t have your brat! You’ve got some nerve showing up here—”Logan took another step forward. “I’m not playing games. You have her. Bring her to me now.”Kent moved to block the door, squaring his shoulders. “You’re not stepping a foot inside my house.”Logan’s lips curled into something between a smirk and a snarl. “You think you can stop me?”Kent lunged forward to shove him back, but Logan was ready. In one swift motion, Logan sidestepped, grabbed Kent’s wrist, and twisted it behind his back.

The snarls of the dogs grew louder, their teeth bared and their eyes glowed in the dusk light. Five of them now crowded near the rusted iron gate, muscles tensed, were ready to leap. Logan stood firm, his jaw clenched, not backing an inch. His shirt clung to him, drenched in sweat, but his eyes burned with rage. Then, from the front door of the large weather-worn house, a man emerged. Almost immediately, Logan recognized him instantly. He was Kent, Logan's uncle. One of his father’s elder brothers. Kent was a man known for his cruelty and arrogance—a man Logan had hoped never to cross paths with again. Before now, Logan didn't know this was Kent's house. After all, Kent had a house in the main city. Kent squinted, then scowled. “What the hell are you doing here?” he barked. His voice was rough from years of liquor and bitterness. “You’ve got no business stepping into my property, Logan!” Logan's voice was as cold as the night breeze. “You know why I’m here. Bring ou
