Gavin strutted into school that morning, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket. The moment he stepped through the main doors, all eyes were on him.

“Gavin! My guy!” A junior high-fived him as he passed.

“Bro, you have become Legendary,” another student laughed.

“Can’t wait for the party this weekend!” a girl called from her locker.

“Yeah, it’s gonna be insane!” another voice added.

Gavin barely acknowledged them, only offering a lazy smirk.

“Everyone’s invited,” he said smoothly, then turned his gaze toward the jocks at the end of the hall, where Ethan and Chase were standing. “Except for them.”

Ethan’s jaw locked, his fists curled into a ball, but he said nothing.

Gavin could see that he was holding back his anger and that only made his smirk widen.

Harrison appeared at Gavin’s side, shaking his head with amusement. “You’re really rubbing salt in the wound, huh?”

Gavin shrugged. “They deserve it.”

As the first bell rang, Gavin headed to class, bidding Ha

  • Chapter 20: A pain in his chest

Gavin stood in the middle of the alley, his hands clenched into fists, his heart pounding hard in his chest. He didn’t know why he hadn’t walked away already. Maybe he should have. Maybe he still could. But his feet wouldn’t move. His eyes were locked on Angela, who was still being held by the man with the gun.“Don’t do anything stupid,” the man warned, with a sharp voice. Then he raised his gun and pointed it straight at Gavin’s chest. “This is not the time to play hero. Leave. Or I’ll shoot you.”Gavin didn’t move. He couldn’t. His eyes flickered to Angela—her face was pale, and her eyes were wide with fear. Her mouth opened slightly, like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out. She looked so scared, so helpless. • Chapter 19: At Crossroads

The sun had completely disappeared from the sky, when Gavin dropped Harrison off. The streets were mostly quiet, painted in orange and blue shadows. As they pulled into the driveway, Harrison let out a dramatic sigh. “Home sweet chaos.” Gavin glanced at the empty front porch. “Your mom’s not home?” “She’s probably off with her pathetic woman’s club,” Harrison said, rolling his eyes. “Last week they met to talk about decorative spoons for a council meeting.” They both laughed and the minute their thunderous laughter died down. Harrison turned to look at his friend. “Do you mind coming in? It would be so boring staying here alone!” Gavin nudged. “I’m always open to curing boredom.” Harrison smiled as they both stepped inside. The familiar smell of lavender and old books hit Gavin’s noise and he couldn’t help but welcome it. It smelt homely. Harrison led Gavin upstairs to his room, which was a typical mix of genius and mess. There were tools, wires, comic books, and a few empty c

Mr. Smith’s voice rang out across the school courtyard. The anger in his voice couldn’t be missed and Gavin couldn’t help but shake his head in anger. “The school must have some idea what’s going on! How does a student just disappear?!” Gavin heard Mr. Smith say to Principal Moore, who looked shaken. Poor Mrs. Moore little did she know she was just being a pawn in Mr. Smith’s little games. Gavin didn’t move closer to the scene. He watched, as Mr. Smith kept yelling at the principal in front of the staff and students scattered around the front lawn. His tie was crooked, his expression wild—completely out of his usual composed self. Gavin had to hand it to Mr. Smith he was good at pretending, good at making people believe that he was a concerned father. But that would all be over soon. Gavin took a deep breath, as he slowly made his way towards Mr. Smith's direction. His hoodie was pulled halfway over his head, his hands stuffed in his pockets. Students turned, one by one, starin
