Chapter 1

The Fall.

Chapter 1.

Carson’s POV

“Sir, he needs to be fired. Sent to jail if possible!”

Cara’s voice cut through the office like a blade. Everyone’s head turned to give her attention while I stood frozen near my desk as she pointed straight at me, her face twisted with anger.

“I don’t understand,” I said, looking between her and the other women gathering behind her. “What are you talking about?”

Two of the junior staff, Lisa and Dana, stepped forward. Lisa folded her arms and spoke. “Don’t act like you don’t know, Carson. You’ve been doing this for months.”

Dana nodded hard, siding with her. “He corners us, makes sexual comments and then tries touching us when no one is looking.”

My stomach dropped. The actual fuck?

“That’s not true. I’ve never—”

“Enough!” Cara snapped. “I’m taking this to Mr. Roberts right now.”

Before I could say another word, she grabbed my arm and pulled me towards his office. The other women followed, their voices rising as they pushed me down the hall toward my father’s office. People stepped aside. Some whispered while some just stared trying to figure out what exactly was going on.

We reached the door. Cara didn’t knock. She shoved it open.

My father looked up from his desk, surprised. “What is going on here?”

Cara pointed at me again. “Your son sexually harassed me. He tried to force himself on me last night after work. When I pushed him away he threatened me.”

I stared at her wide eyed. “Cara, that never happened. That can never happen. I left the office at six and I went straight home.”

Lisa cut in. “He’s lying. He’s done the same to me. He makes nasty comments about my body and then tries to kiss or touch me. He’s a fucking pervert Mr Robert!”

Dana added, “He even told me if I wanted a promotion I should be nicer to him, that I can’t get anywhere in this company until he has his way with me.”

My father raised a hand and the whole room went quiet. He looked at each of the women, then at me. His expression was hard to read.

“All of you, wait outside,” he said. “Cara, stay.”

The others filed out, still glaring at me. The door closed leaving only the three of us in the office.

My father leaned back in his chair, tapping the head of his pen. “Carson, care to explain yourself?”

“There’s nothing to explain because none of it is true,” I said. My voice came out tighter than I wanted. “I’ve never touched any of them. I’ve never said those things. Cara, why the hell are you doing this?”

She didn’t look away. “Because it happened. And I’m not going to stay quiet anymore.”

I turned fully toward her. “We barely even talk. You avoid me most days and even insult me, so when did this supposed attack happen?”

“Last night. In the parking garage. You followed me to my car.”

“I wasn’t even in the garage last night. I took the main elevator and left through the front.”

My father watched us both. “Cara, are you certain about this?”

“I’m certain enough to take it to court,” she said. “I already spoke to a lawyer this morning. If the company doesn’t handle it, I will.”

She stood. “I’m done talking here.”

She walked out without another word. The door clicked shut behind her.

Silence settled over the office. My father rubbed his forehead like he was trying to make sense of what had just happened.

“Dad—”

“Don’t,” he said. “Those women walked in here together. They all said the same thing. Why would they invent something like this?”

“I don’t know. But I promise you, I didn't do it.” I pleaded. I have never spoke to any of those women and they’re the ones that do say awful words about me so how could I have possibly done that to them.

He looked at me for a long moment. “I want to believe you. You’re my son. But this many people standing against you… it doesn’t look good, Carson.”

“So you’re just going to take their side?”

“I’m suspending you,” he said. “Effective immediately. Until we can sort this out properly. The legal team will handle the statements. You stay away from the office and from those women. Do you understand?”

I felt something cold settle in my chest. “You’re suspending me based on accusations with no valid proof?”

“I’m protecting the company and you at the same time. If this goes public while you’re still walking the floors, it would get worse for everyone.”

I stood there, staring at him. The man who adopted me when I was five. The man who gave me a name and a place was the same person now looking at me like a problem that needed to be managed.

“I didn’t do it,” I said again, quieter this time.

He didn’t answer. He just pointed toward the door.

I walked out.

The main floor was already buzzing. People stopped talking when they saw me. A few turned away in either disgust or anger or even a mixture of both. Someone near the copy machine muttered, “I didn’t expect that from him.”

Another voice answered, “Animals always show their true face eventually.”

I kept walking. My face felt hot. My hands were clenched so tight my nails dug into my palms. I reached my desk and sat down hard. The computer screen was still open on the report I had been working on an hour ago but looking at it now, it felt like it belonged to someone else.

I sat there trying to breathe. Trying to understand how everything had turned so fast. Then the elevator dinged.

Three uniformed officers stepped out. One of them spoke to the nearest staff member and the staff member pointed directly at me.

They walked over.

“Carson Roberts?” the lead officer asked.

I looked up. “Yes.”

“You’re under arrest for sexual harassment and attempted sexual assault. Please stand up and place your hands behind your back.”

The entire floor went silent.

I stood slowly. “This is a mistake. I didn’t do anything. I can assure you that I didn’t do anything.”

“You can explain yourself when you get to the station,” the officer said as he pulled out the cuffs and locked it around my wrists.

My father came out of his office just as they clicked the cold, heavy metal around my wrists. His face had gone pale.

“Officers, wait. This is my son. There must be some misunderstanding. Can we discuss this here?”

The lead officer shook his head. “Sir, you’ll have to come down to the station if you want to speak further. We have a complaint and supporting statements. We’re required to take him in.”

My father stepped closer. “Carson—”

I met his eyes. For a second I thought he might say something. Maybe try to at least defend me in some way and tell them this was wrong.

Instead he just looked tired.

“I’ll meet you there,” he finally said.

The officers guided me toward the elevator. Every person on the floor watched. No one spoke. No one looked surprised.

The doors closed as I heard someone say serves him right.

I stared at the mirrored wall in front of me, trying to separate the cuffs like it was a bad dream I was in and I tried to remember the exact moment my life had started falling apart.

How had I gone from heading to work and going on with my daily activities to being accused of sexual assault and maybe, just maybe being led to jail?
