Damon woke to the sound of his phone buzzing.

The sun wasn't up yet. The sky was still dark, the stars just beginning to fade. The canvas was cold against his back. His body was stiff. His ribs ached. His knuckles had swollen overnight, the tape Cruz had wrapped around them now tight and uncomfortable.

He grabbed his phone. Leo.

"Corso. Get to Helen's. Now."

Damon sat up. His spine cracked. "What's going on?"<

  • An Old contract

Yuri Petrov's office was small and clean. A desk, two chairs, a filing cabinet, and a window that looked out on a parking lot. It was the office of a man who had left his past behind and built something ordinary in its place.Nathan sat down across from him."How much do you know about what I've been doing?" Nathan asked."I know you took over the underground after the Volkovs fell. I know you killed a lot of people getting there. I know you've been quiet for the last few weeks, which means either you're finished or you're planning something." Yuri leaned back in his chair. "I'm guessing it's the second one.""You're guessing right.""Then why are you here?""Because I need to find Konstantin Marchenko."Yuri didn't say anything for a moment. Then he shook his head slowly."I don't know where he is. I haven't talked to him in fifteen years.""But he's contacted you."Yuri's expression didn't change, but Nathan saw the same flicker he'd seen in the lobby."How do you know that?""Becau

  • Take a bait

Nathan sat in the back booth and looked at the photograph of Marchenko for a long time. The man in the picture was in his fifties, gray-haired, thin-faced, with the kind of flat, patient expression that came from decades of doing difficult things well. He looked like a businessman. He looked like someone you'd pass on the street and never think about again. He didn't look like a man who had spent fifteen years building a network in the shadows. But that was the point."The voice wants to find him," Nathan said. "And he thinks I'm the one who can do it.""He thinks you're the one who will do it," Frank said. "Because he knows you've been looking for answers about Sarah. He knows you're not going to stop until you find them. And he knows that eventually, you'll cross paths with Marchenko.""So he's been waiting for me to do the work for him.""Yes."Nathan set the photograph down."Which means he's been watching me. For years. He's been tracking my movements, my allies, my enemies. He's

  • That Voice

Nathan walked out of the bar without another word.He didn't slam the door. He didn't throw anything. He just walked out, got in his car, and sat behind the wheel with his hands gripping it so hard his knuckles went white.Frank had been lying to him for fourteen years. Frank had been part of the operation that had hunted Sarah. Frank had been the reason she was found. Frank had taken money to give them information about her, and he had done it while she was pregnant with Ryan. And he had done it to pay for Ryan's hospital bills. That was the part Nathan couldn't get past. He wanted to be furious. He was furious. But every time he tried to hold the anger in his hands, it slipped through because the reason Frank had done it was the same reason Nathan had done everything: to keep his family alive. That didn't make it right. It just made it harder. He started the car and drove.---He didn't go to Frank's. He didn't go to Alexei's. He drove to the safe house where Erik was staying and kn

  • The Conversation

Nathan parked two blocks from the bar and sat in the car.He had the documents Erik sent him open on his phone. Fourteen-year-old records from the Volkov financial files. A name change. A property purchase. A note that said positioned as asset. Everything he needed to confirm what he'd already begun to suspect. He didn't want to be right. That was the thing. He wanted to walk into that bar and have Frank explain it all away, tell him the documents were wrong, tell him there was a story that made it all make sense. He wanted to be wrong. But he'd been wrong about enough people in his life to know that wanting something didn't make it true.He turned off the phone and got out of the car.---Frank was behind the counter when Nathan walked in. The place was empty — it was late afternoon, between lunch and dinner, the dead hour. Frank had a rag in his hand and was wiping down the wood the way he did every day, the same slow moti

  • The man always

Nathan sat on the cot for a long time without moving. The letter was on the table beside him. The words were still in his head, still cutting through everything he'd believed for the last four years.Someone who was already inside your world before I ever met you.He ran through every name. Every face. Every person who had been part of his life before Sarah. There weren't many. When he'd come back from prison, he'd had nothing. No friends. No family. No one who would take his call. He'd built his life from scratch, one fight at a time, one favor at a time, one person at a time. The first person who'd ever helped him was Frank.Frank had given him his first fight. Frank had given him a place to sleep when he had nowhere else to go. Frank had introduced him to the underground. Frank had been there from the very beginning, before Sarah, before Ryan, before any of it.And Frank had known Sarah. He'd told Nathan that

  • The envelope

Nathan didn't open the envelope in the church. He sat with it in his jacket pocket all the way back to Frank's bar, through the back door and into the small room where he'd been sleeping for the last week. He sat on the cot, took the envelope out, and held it in his hands for a long time without moving. He had gone looking for proof that Sarah had been caught up in something bigger than their marriage. He had found it. Now he was holding a letter she had left for him, sealed four years ago, written by a woman who had known she was going to die.He didn't know if he wanted to read it.He tore the envelope open.---The letter was three pages long, handwritten, in Sarah's careful script. It began with his name.Nathan,If you're reading this, then Paul found you. Or you found him. Either way, you've gotten further than I hoped and further than I feared. So I'll start with the part that matters most.I'm s
