He died in the ice, carved up by the wife he'd fed for nine years while her lover held the bowl. Lin Chen gave the Su family everything: his money, his parents' house, his body scavenging through a frozen world. His reward was learning that the son he raised belonged to another man, and that he was only ever useful. Then he opens his eyes 92 days before the storm, pen in hand, about to sign the loan that started it all. This time, he tears it up. With his memory of the disaster, a mysterious pendant that hides a space of its own, and a set of lottery numbers burned into his mind, Lin Chen cuts the family loose, wins half a billion dollars, and buys the mansion directly across from theirs. Now he'll stockpile a world's worth of supplies, watch the Sus beg at his door, and decide who deserves a place in the shelter and who gets left in the cold. But the pendant wasn't made by chance. Someone chose him. And he may not be the only one who came back. Revenge is only the beginning. Want a shorter version for the submission listing, or a punchier tagline to go with it?

Chapter 1

Reborn

The cold had a taste. Metal and ash and something sweeter underneath it that Lin Chen didn't want to name.

He couldn't feel his legs anymore. That was probably a mercy. What he could feel was the knife  Su Wei's knife, his wife's knife working through the meat of his thigh with the patient, unhurried rhythm of someone carving a holiday roast.

"Don't hate us, Chen." Her voice wavered, though he couldn't tell if it was the cold or something closer to hunger. "It's forty below out there. We need something to eat."

He tried to speak. What came out was a wet, broken sound that used to be words.

"She's right." Gu Yan crouched beside her, close enough that his shadow fell across Lin Chen's ruined chest. "You've kept us alive this long. Don't start being difficult now."

Gu Yan. The "friend." The one Su Wei had sworn, over and over, for six years, meant nothing to her.

Gu Yan slid an arm around her waist and kissed her, right there, over Lin Chen's dying body, unhurried, like there was nothing left in the world worth hiding from him anymore.

"Time to eat," Gu Yan said, breaking away. He looked toward the corner of the shelter, to the small shivering shape huddled there. "Come here. Hold the bowl steady."

"Okay, Baba." Little Rui stepped forward.

Baba.

The word hit harder than the knife had. Lin Chen stared at the boy at Su Wei's dark hair, at eyes that had never once looked like his own, and he had never let himself ask why.

Su Wei watched the understanding land on his face, and something almost satisfied moved across hers.

"He was never yours," she said. "He's Yan's. You really thought I loved you?"

The knife came down again.

Lin Chen had grown up with nothing no parents, no name that meant anything, nothing but a hunger to belong to someone. He had given the Su family every year of his life since he was twenty-two. His paycheck. His parents' house, when her parents needed somewhere to live. His body, scavenging through the frozen ruins of the city so they'd have food while he went without.

He had thought that was love.

It turned out he had just been useful. A guard dog that fetched.

Now that he'd been picked clean, they were finishing the job.

"I swear," he forced out, and every syllable filled his mouth with blood, "even if I die ….even if I have to come back as a ghost  I'll make every one of you pay."

The dark swallowed the words before Su Wei could answer them.

————————————————————————

"Sir?"

A voice, gentle, pulling him up out of nothing.

"Sir, are you all right?"

Lin Chen's chair screeched backward across polished marble as he lunged upright, gasping, hands scrabbling at a chest that wasn't torn open anymore. No frost. No blade. No wife standing over him with red on her hands.

Just a bright office, floor-to-ceiling windows, traffic moving twelve stories below, and a bank manager staring at him like he'd lost his mind.

He fumbled his phone out of his pocket with shaking fingers.

August 10th. 2:47 p.m.

He checked it again. And again, certain the date would dissolve into some cruel hallucination.

A laugh tore out of him instead  wild, disbelieving, half sob. "I'm alive. I actually came back."

The manager was edging toward the phone on her desk, clearly deciding whether to call security. Lin Chen barely noticed. He'd been given back ninety-two days. Ninety-two days before a solar storm ripped through the atmosphere and dropped the temperature of the entire planet into freefall. Ninety-two days before the world he knew ended and ninety-five percent of everyone in it went with it.

But right now, outside, the sun was still shining.

"Mr. Lin." The manager's voice was careful now. "Would you still like to proceed with the loan?"

Right. Today. The day he'd come in to mortgage the only thing his parents had ever left him, so Su Heng Su Wei's little brother could throw it into a "tech startup" that was, in reality, a fast track to a casino floor.

The door banged open before he could answer.

"What's taking so long?" Su Wei swept in, silk hair catching the light, a soft, practiced smile already fixed on her face. In his last life he would have called that smile beautiful.

Now all he saw was what had been hiding underneath it.

For one unbearable second, phantom teeth tore into his side again. He had to remind his lungs how to work.

"Chen, sign it," she said, sliding the pen across the desk toward him. "It's not like we're taking your house. Henry's company is going to be huge. Think of it as an investment."

An investment.

He'd heard those exact words before. And like a fool, he'd believed them  right up until Su Heng dumped every cent of it on a blackjack table within the month, and left Lin Chen holding the debt alone.

Not this time.

Under the manager's bewildered stare and his wife's growing impatience, Lin Chen picked up the loan agreement.

And tore it cleanly in half.

The sound was small and clean  two sheets of paper parting at the fold.

Su Wei's smile vanished like it had never existed.

"Have you lost your mind?" she snapped.

Lin Chen looked at her  really looked, the way he hadn't let himself in nine years of marriage and felt nothing but cold, quiet certainty settle into his chest.

"No," he said. "For the first time, I think I finally haven't."
