“Welcome home.”

Chay smiled as the car slowly climbed the winding road toward the top of the hills. His smile was genuine and warm.

For the first few minutes, Molly didn’t say anything. She replied with a grin and turned to continue staring through the window.

“Wooow,” she muttered to herself as she simply watched.

The road was lined up with perfectly trimmed trees and elegant stone walls. While warm lights brightened the gardens on either side.

The following afternoon, John Whitney sat in a private meeting room at the Halton Hotel and Suites. Just across him was Felix also seated scrolling through his phone. They had a bottle of whiskey on the table with three glasses standing next to the bottle. Could they be expecting a third guest? John glanced at his watch for a moment and said, “He should be here soon.”Felix looked at the time on his own phone and nodded in agreement. “He should. He better come.”John leaned back, a satisfied smile spreading across his face. “Of course, he will.”Out of nowhere, Felix put his phone away and studied John with open admiration.“I have to give it to you, John. This is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.” He shook his head, smiling. “We have spent so long trying to figure out how to get Chay out of our way, and you found the answer right under his nose in the shortest time possible.”John chuckled.“How did you even think this would work?” Felix added. “Sometimes, the most obvious solut

John's back struck the edge of the desk. His breath caught, and for the first time since Chay had entered the room, genuine fear flashed across his face.Chay's fingers tightened around his collar.“Go on,” he shouted in his face. “Say one more word about my father.”John swallowed. But even with Chay's fist twisted in his shirt, the old man's pride refused to let him surrender.“What's the matter?” he rasped, raising a brow. “Did I touch a nerve?”Chay's face was inches from his.“You think this is funny?”“I think you're proving my point.” John forced a crooked smile. “All that talk about evidence and justice, and look at you. No better than the man you claim to be investigating.”Chay's grip tightened again. “Watch your mouth.”“Why? Are you going to kill me?”The question hung in the air.John studied him, searching his face. Then, as though he had found the one weapon capable of cutting through Chay's restraint, he spoke again.“Your father is dead. Your mother is dead. And you

The following morning, Chay Morgan went straight to John Whitney. He had barely slept, not because he was afraid of what he might discover, but because every time he closed his eyes, he saw his parents.Several years.Over several years of believing that a terrible accident had taken them from him.‘Why didn’t they just stay careful while driving?’ Chay would always have this question in his mind. ‘Maybe if they were careful enough, I wouldn’t be going through this,’ he would always say to himself as a little boy while crying. For several years, he lived with the loss, accepting the unanswered questions as part of a past he could never change. And now, a handful of transactions were beginning to suggest that their deaths might have not been an accident at all.Corey had worked through the night. By dawn, he had already traced who authorized the suspicious payments. And Chay wasn’t surprised when he heard who did. John Whitney. In no time, Chay arrived at the office. He knew John

Chay’s attention immediately sharpened. “What else did you find??”Corey responded as he took a seat, “something very useful I believe. But there’s a problem.” “I’m not surprised,” Chay leaned back. “Talk to me.”Corey opened the folder and withdrew several sheets of papers. “So back to the records I had shown you earlier… it initially appeared to be ordinary business payments. I mean, the amounts weren’t exactly so unusual for the period…”“And the companies involved had legitimate commercial registrations at the time. If I had not compared the dates with the original accident report, I might have overlooked the connection entirely.” He slid the first document on the desk towards ChayChay took his time to examine it.The record was more than thirty years old as expected. It contained the details of a payment made by a company involved in industrial equipment distribution which John owned during that period… Chay still remembered as a little boy because John and his father usual

By now, it was already night. Several hours had passed. Yet the lights in Chay's study remained off.He was sitting on the desk just staring into the darkness. He had been sitting there since Ethan left.Hours had passed, but Chay had barely moved. The records were still on his desk. He placed his hand on it. Ethan left which was hours ago. He sat there alone in the dark staring into blank dark space as his mind raced with several possibilities. John Whitney could be connected to his parents' death? Could they have actually died without a cause just like he has been told all his life? Could their deaths have been planned? He wondered. Several questions went through his mind. Earlier, Corey left with an assignment while Chay concluded his meeting with Ethan. He could not concentrate fully no matter how much he tried. Then the door opened.‘John Whitney.’Could he man have had something to do with his parents' deaths?Chay had believed something different. He had accepted i

Chay’s brows furrowed deeply. His head tilted and he sat upright. “Come in,” he immediately ordered. Without hesitation, Corey walked in with some documents in his hands. “It’s on the reports from the station, boss,” he said and paused, glancing at Ethan. “Can I go ahead sir?”Chay glanced at Ethan and turned to Corey, nodding, “Go ahead.” “I was going through the reports on the investigation from the officers and I found something suspicious,” Corey began as he walked towards Chay.“…something unsettling. You need to see it boss,” he said and placed the papers on the table one after another.Chay’s brows furrowed as he took one of the papers and studied it. At the first glance, he couldn’t find what Corey was talking about. It was filled with transaction records, old documents that had surfaced while authorities were examining the Whitneys' financial dealings and the network of people connected to them.Chay didn’t understand what exactly was suspicious or unsettling about this.
