The Gulfstream G650 private jet banked sharply over a turquoise expanse of the Andaman Sea, the cabin smelling of leather and Suthira’s signature sandalwood. Ezra stared out the window, his reflection looking back at him—sharper, more expensive, but with eyes that were starting to look like those of a man who hadn’t slept in forty-eight hours.

"You’re still thinking about it," Suthira said. She didn't look up from her glass of vintage Krug. She was lounging across the cream-colored sofa, her legs tucked under her, looking far too relaxed for a woman who had just liquidated a rival’s life work on a whim.

"Thinking about what?" Ezra asked, turning back to her. "The fact that we’re heading to a private island for a 'marketing retreat' with a team I haven't seen yet? Or the fact that Leo Vance looked like he wanted to jump off a bridge?"

"Leo was a parasite," she said, her voice a casual wave of the hand. "I did him a favor by cutting him loose before he totally drowned in his own mediocrity. And the team is already on the island, Ezra. They’ve been prepping the strategy for the Fin-Intelligence global rollout for thirty-six hours."

"Right. The global rollout for a fish-translator that I coded in a coffee shop," Ezra muttered, rubbing his temples. "I just feel like we’re skipping a few steps. Like, I don’t know, testing? Or maybe having more than one prototype?"

"You worry too much," Suthira purred, sliding off the sofa. She moved toward him with that fluid, predatory grace, stopping only when she was inches away. She reached out, her fingers catching the knot of his tie. "I didn’t buy you for your caution, Ezra. I bought you for your madness. The 'vision,' remember?"

"I remember," he said, his voice dropping an octave as her scent hit him. "It’s hard to forget when you’ve got a hundred-million-dollar receipt in your pocket."

"Good." She tugged on the tie, pulling his face down to hers. "Now, stop thinking about Leo. Stop thinking about Marcus. Focus on the island. It’s a clean slate."

"Who is Marcus, Suthira? Really?"

The temperature in the cabin didn't drop this time, but her eyes went very still. "He was a lesson. And I’ve already graduated. Are we done with the history lesson?"

"Yeah," Ezra sighed, feeling the magnetic pull of her gaze. "We’re done."

The island was a jagged shard of emerald set in a sea of sapphire. A sleek, modern villa sat atop a cliff, its glass walls shimmering in the afternoon sun. As the helicopter touched down on the private pad, Ezra hopped out, expecting to see a swarm of assistants, marketing gurus, and tech leads.

The pad was empty. The path to the villa was empty. Even the massive oak doors of the entrance stood silent.

"Uh, Suthira?" Ezra asked, looking around as the helicopter blades began to slow. "Where is everyone? Did I miss the memo about a dress code? Or did they all go on a hike?"

Suthira stepped out of the chopper, her silk trousers fluttering in the breeze. She didn't look around. She just started walking toward the villa. "I told you, they’re exactly where they need to be."

"Which is where? The basement? The beach?"

She stopped at the top of the stairs, turning back to him with a slow, enigmatic smile. "They’re on the mainland, Ezra. All of them."

Ezra froze, his hand on his suitcase. "Wait. You said this was a marketing retreat. A team-building exercise."

"It is," she said, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "But I realized that the most important team in this company only has two members. You and me. And we have a lot of building to do."

"You cleared out a whole resort for us?" Ezra asked, a mix of disbelief and a sudden, sharp spike of adrenaline hitting his gut. "The staff, the chefs, the security—everyone?"

"I like my privacy when I’m conducting a merger," Suthira said. She walked back toward him, her heels clicking on the stone. She stopped so close he could feel the heat radiating off her. "Don't tell me you’re scared of being alone with me, Ezra. Not after the desk in my office."

"Scared isn't the word," Ezra laughed breathlessly, his eyes roaming her face. "But 'marketing retreat' is a hell of a euphemism for 'isolated kidnapping.'"

"Is it kidnapping if you signed the contract voluntarily?" She reached out, her hand sliding up his arm to grip the back of his neck. "I want you focused. No phones. No emails. No distractions. Just the vision. And the visionary."

"And what’s the first item on the agenda, Boss?"

"Dinner," she whispered, her breath warm against his lips. "And then, I want to see if that manic energy of yours can survive a night without a server crash."

*

The sun had dipped below the horizon, leaving the sky a bruised purple, stitched with the first few stars. They were on the rooftop terrace, the air balmy and thick with the sound of the ocean crashing against the cliffs below. A single table was set with a bottle of wine and a platter of fruit and cheese, but neither of them had touched the food.

Ezra was leaning against the glass railing, his shirt unbuttoned halfway, watching Suthira as she poured more wine.

"You’re staring again," she said, handed him a glass.

"It’s a nice view," he replied, taking a sip. "The island, I mean."

"Liar," she teased, stepping into his space. She was wearing a sheer, silk wrap that did very little to hide the obsidian lace underneath. "You’re wondering what the catch is. You’ve been looking for the exit since we landed."

"Can you blame me? You just fired my oldest rival and bought his company in the time it took us to have a drink," Ezra said, his voice low. "I’m waiting for the part where you tell me I’m being replaced by an AI version of myself."

"You’re irreplaceable, Ezra. Mostly because I don't think any AI could be quite as charmingly full of shit as you are." She set her glass down on the railing and moved closer, her hands finding his waist. "Why can't you just accept that you won?"

"Because guys like me don't win like this. We get a lucky break, we make a few bucks, and then we crash. This? This feels like a dream. Or a trap."

"Then let it be a trap," she whispered, her hands sliding under his shirt, her nails grazing his skin. "Stop fighting it. You’re exactly where I want you. Do you have any idea how much power you have right now? You have the keys to the kingdom."

"I think you’re the one with the keys, Suthira," Ezra groaned, his head falling back as she kissed the pulse point on his neck. "I’m just the guy you hired to drive the car."

"Then drive it," she commanded.

She pulled him toward a massive, low-profile outdoor daybed that was piled with silk cushions and furs. The moonlight was the only light, casting long, dramatic shadows over the terrace.

The intimacy that followed was different from the frantic, high-stakes energy of the office. It was slower, more possessive. Suthira moved with a deliberate authority, her eyes never leaving his, as if she were documenting every reaction, every gasp, every moment of surrender.

"Say it," she whispered into his ear, her voice a ragged command as the ocean roared below them. "Say you aren't going anywhere."

"I'm not... I'm not going anywhere," Ezra rasped, his fingers tangling in her hair, pulling her down for a kiss that tasted like salt and expensive wine.

In that moment, under the vast, open sky, the paranoia felt miles away. There was only the heat of her skin, the weight of her body, and the intoxicating feeling of being the center of her universe. He felt like a god. He felt like a king.

But as Suthira arched against him, her eyes shut tight in a moment of pure, raw release, Ezra’s gaze drifted past her shoulder.

The villa’s architectural lighting was subtle, mostly hidden LEDs tucked into the eaves. But there, nestled in the corner of a decorative stone pillar overlooking the terrace, was something else.

A tiny, pin-sized glint of red.

Ezra’s heart didn't just skip a beat; it felt like it hit a wall. He froze, his breath hitching in his throat. It was a lens. A high-definition, wide-angle lens, perfectly positioned to capture every inch of the daybed.

Suthira opened her eyes, her expression shifting from bliss to a sharp, analytical focus as she felt him go rigid. "Ezra? What is it?"

He didn't answer. He sat up, his skin suddenly cold despite the tropical heat. He pointed toward the pillar. "Is that a camera, Suthira?"

She didn't even look back. She just leaned back against the cushions, her silk wrap falling open, looking utterly unbothered. "It’s a private island, Ezra. Security is a priority."

"Security?" Ezra stood up, his hands shaking as he reached for his trousers. "That’s not a security camera. It’s pointed directly at the bed. It’s pointed at us."

Suthira let out a low, soft laugh that sent a shiver of ice down Ezra’s spine. She sat up slowly, smoothing her hair. "I told you, I protect my assets. Every part of them."

"You’re filming us?" Ezra’s voice rose, a mix of betrayal and pure, unadulterated fear. "Is this what the 'integration' is? Am I just content for you? Is this Phase 3?"

Suthira stood up, her face a mask of cool, professional indifference once more. The warmth he’d felt minutes ago was gone, replaced by the shark he’d met in the boardroom. She walked over to him, her eyes locking onto his.

"Don't be dramatic, Ezra," she said, her voice like velvet dragged over gravel. "It’s for your own protection. And mine. In this world, data is the only truth. Why wouldn't I want to preserve our most... productive moments?"

"You're sick," Ezra whispered, backing away from her.

"I'm thorough," she corrected. She reached out, her hand grazing his cheek, but her eyes remained cold—as cold as the depths of the ocean. "Now, come back to bed. The night isn't over, and I haven't finished with you yet."

Ezra looked at the camera, then at the woman who had bought his soul for a hundred million dollars. He realized then that the glass cage wasn't just a metaphor. It was the island. It was the villa. And she was watching him from every angle.

"Is Marcus still on one of your hard drives, Suthira?" Ezra asked, his voice trembling.

Suthira just smiled, and for the first time, Ezra saw the monster behind the silk. "Marcus was a low-resolution mistake, Ezra. You... you’re going to be a masterpiece."

"You really sold us out, Suthira. You turned us into a reality show.""I turned us into an empire." She leaned in, her lips grazing his jaw. "The world is watching. He was halfway through tugging on a pair of silk-lined trousers that probably cost more than his college tuition.Suthira stood in the doorway, already dressed for the gala in a gown of liquid silver that looked like it had been poured onto her body. She held a black silk tie in her hand, her amber eyes scanning him with a slow, appreciative hunger."You’re running behind, Ezra," she said, her voice dropping into that velvet-over-gravel register. The elevator doors hadn’t even fully sealed when Ezra felt Suthira’s hand slide from his shoulder to his throat, her thumb pressing against the erratic pulse there. The gold-leafed car ascended with a silent, stomach-flipping velocity."You’re still riding the high, aren't you?" Suthira murmured, her eyes dark and reflecting the elevator’s warm light."I just took down Julian Thorne. Of course I am," Ezra said, his voice a bit more breathless than he wanted it to be. "The guy’s been a thorn in my side for years. Seeing him turn that shade of purple was worth the $14.22 I had in my pocket this morning.""It’s a good look on you. Power." She stepped closer, her silk suit rustling. "But don't get too comfortable, Ezra. The higher you climb, the thinner the air."The elevator chimed, the doors sliding open to the penthouse.
