Chapter 7

The wall exploded inwards.

Chunks of stone and smoke rained into the alcove. Kiny dove over Reyna, shielding her as rubble pelted their backs. Heat followed the blast—a surge of pressure that crackled with dark energy.

Kiny’s ears rang.

When the dust settled, five figures stepped through the breach, weapons drawn and armor glowing with runes of nobility.

At their front stood a tall warrior wrapped in violet-tinted steel and a half-cloak bearing the sigil of House Vorrin—a black serpent coiled around a burning chalice.

“Targets acquired,” the leader said, voice cold. “Orders are to retrieve the Core Sigil and neutralize the traitors.”

Reyna’s eyes widened. “That’s… Kael Vorrin. The King’s Shadowblade.”

Kiny tensed. “You know him?”

“He’s not just a noble. He’s a ranked assassin. The kind they send when they want someone dead and erased.”

Kael drew a thin, silver blade with shifting veins of purple energy running down the steel. It hummed like a beast breathing.

“You’ve drawn attention you shouldn’t have,” Kael said, pointing the blade at Kiny. “Hand over the sigil. Walk away breathing.”

[SYSTEM ALERT: New Threat Detected]

• Name: Kael Vorrin

• Class: Noble Assassin

• Hidden Trait: ???

• Power Level: 3x Current Host

• Warning: Fatal risk in direct confrontation

“Three times stronger than me?” Kiny whispered.

Reyna reached for her staff. “We’re not giving up anything.”

Kael’s expression didn’t change. “Very well. Kill the girl. Bring the boy alive.”

The four warriors behind him surged forward.

Kiny leapt into action.

[Shadow Blink – Activated]

He teleported behind the nearest enemy and drove his elbow into the back of the man’s neck. The warrior stumbled, but not down. A fist flew toward Kiny’s face—he ducked, rolled, and grabbed a fallen sword.

Reyna cast a sweeping arc of flame in front of her, pushing two attackers back. “Kiny, left!”

Kiny twisted, blocked a sword slash, and countered with a strike to the ribs.

[Improvised Weapon Boost + Precision +1]

The blade cut through armor. Blood sprayed.

[Enemy Status: Wounded – Mobility Reduced]

But the fight was only beginning.

Kael didn’t move. He simply watched.

“Amateurs,” he said softly.

Then he flicked his blade into the air—and the shadows themselves shifted.

Darkness rose from the walls, forming spear-like constructs. They launched toward Kiny and Reyna.

Kiny ducked—one spear scraped his shoulder. Another struck Reyna’s thigh, and she cried out, collapsing against the stone.

[Reyna Status: Injured – Movement Impaired]

“Damn it!” Kiny shouted, grabbing her arm. “We have to fall back!”

But Kael was already moving.

He blurred—one moment standing still, the next, ten feet away, his blade swinging toward Kiny’s chest.

[Shadow Blink: Cooldown – 9s]

Too late to dodge.

The blade neared—

CLANG!

A burst of black fire knocked Kael’s sword off-target.

Kiny staggered back, confused. “What—?”

A figure dropped from the ceiling behind them, cloaked in black, face covered by a porcelain mask shaped like a smiling demon.

“Thought you could take all the fun for yourself, Kael?” the figure said, voice distorted by magic.

Kael’s eyes narrowed. “You…”

The stranger raised a hand—and the air around them twisted.

[SYSTEM ALERT: UNREGISTERED SYSTEM USER DETECTED]

• Code Name: Entity No. 13

• Alignment: ???

• Host Signature: Unknown

• Behavior: Unstable

• Classification: System Rogue

Reyna’s eyes widened. “That’s a rogue! He doesn’t belong to any kingdom or order.”

Kiny felt his system pulse with unease. Even the interface flickered for a moment.

Kael backed away slowly.

The rogue cracked his neck. “I’ll take the boy. You can keep your bones, Kael.”

Kael scowled. “You don’t belong in this Trial.”

“Neither does fate,” the rogue said, and exploded into motion.

The room became chaos.

Flashes of purple and black energy tore through the stone. Kael and his warriors engaged the rogue with everything they had, but nothing seemed to land. He phased in and out of shadows like liquid smoke, his movements erratic and impossible to predict.

Kiny grabbed Reyna. “We have to move now!”

She nodded, biting back pain.

Kiny activated Shadow Blink and transported them both behind a collapsed pillar. They ran through the shattered corridor beyond, escaping the carnage.

They didn’t stop until they reached an abandoned chamber deep in the lower maze—a forgotten archive filled with broken runes and scattered scrolls.

Kiny laid Reyna down gently. She winced, sweat beading her brow. “That rogue… he shouldn’t be here.”

“What was he?”

“A system gone rogue means the host isn’t bound by any rules. They’re unstable. Wild. Dangerous.”

Kiny sat against the wall, heart pounding.

“That’s the third system user,” he murmured.

Reyna looked at him. “There may be more.”

He swallowed hard.

“We’re in a war zone, aren’t we?”

Reyna didn’t answer.

[SYSTEM UPDATE: Trial Progress – Phase Two Initiated]

• Remaining Contestants: 6

• Top Targets: Kiny (Core Sigil), Reyna (Spellmark Holder)

• Warning: Entity 13 is now active

• Side Mission: Investigate rogue system presence

• Reward: ???

Kiny’s hand trembled as he reached into his cloak and pulled out the Core Sigil.

It still pulsed with energy—but it didn’t feel stable anymore. Like it was reacting to something… darker.

He closed his eyes.

“Whatever this system is,” he whispered, “it’s pulling me into something bigger than just winning a trial.”

Reyna nodded. “You’re not wrong.”

She looked him in the eyes.

“If we survive this, you won’t be an ordinary king.”

“You’ll be something worse…”

“Or something greater.”

Chapter 16 The war was over. Ironcrest no longer bore its name in defiance. The spires still stood, but the city itself had fallen—beneath rebellion, truth, and fire. Noble flags lay in ash. Towers bled smoke. And the people whispered not of kings or conquerors. They whispered his name. But Kiny didn’t feel like a hero. Not anymore. The Morning After the Siege Kiny stood at the edge of the ruined Signal Tower, dawn bleeding red across the horizon. Ashreign hung loosely at his side. All around him, the city was quiet. Too quiet. Victory always felt louder in stories. Behind him, Cassian approached, armored still, though he now wore a torn red sash across his shoulder — a rebel symbol over royal blood. “She doesn’t remember me,” Kiny said without turning.

Chapter 15 The sky above Ironcrest burned. Flaming siege stones arced through the night, casting glowing shadows over the blackened capital walls. War drums thundered from the rebel camp, shaking the earth with every strike. Horns of warning blared across the city towers, but they were drowned by the rising roar of rebels demanding justice. Kiny stood at the front line in silence, the wind tugging at his cloak, his sword Ashreign pulsing on his back. His eyes, sharp as ever, fixed on the towering obsidian gates. Cassian stood beside him, eyes dark with resolve, his twin chain-blades twitching with tension. Behind them, the full force of the Sovereign Warpath stood ready. And above them, hidden in the ridges behind the northern cliffs, Reyna prepared her part of the plan. The Final Push “Are you ready to be the king they never wanted?” Cassian asked.
