"You were always the strong one," Ethan said, stepping out from the shadows with his hands raised. "Now look at us."
Evelyn stood ten paces away, blade drawn but pointed at the ground. Torchlight from the ruins caught the tears in her eyes. "Ethan. Drop whatever you're holding. Please. Just surrender."
He took another step, heart pounding. "Surrender? To what? The people who lied about everything? I saw it, Ev. The vision. They murdered their own god."
"Stop," she snapped, voice shaking. "You sound crazy. The beast is talking through you. That's not real."
*She doubts herself,* Umbra whispered. *Push.*
Ethan ignored it for a second. "It's real. The Nine killed the Tenth Beast. Stole everything. Our whole world runs on that blood. And you're helping them hunt me for it."
Evelyn glanced sideways into the darker tunnels. Inquisitors waited there, silent shapes. "I have no choice. They watch every move. If I fail, they take me too. My rank. My life."
"You think I want to hurt you?" Ethan asked, voice cracking. He stopped moving closer. "You're my sister. The one who snuck me food when Dad locked me away. Remember? We said we'd always protect each other."
She lowered the blade further, just an inch. "I remember. God, I remember everything. But look at you now. Covered in blood. Marcus. Those people in the city. The Church says the beast corrupts completely."
"The Church lies," Ethan shot back, anger rising hot. "They built their power on the first murder. I felt it in the vision. The screams. The betrayal. Don't you feel it too? Some part of you knows."
Evelyn's hand trembled on the hilt. "I feel scared. Not of you. Of what happens if I let you go. They burn failures. Publicly. I have a daughter now, Ethan. Little girl who needs her mom."
"A daughter?" Ethan's breath caught. He hadn't known. "You never told me. Ev, please. We can run together. Tell them I overpowered you."
She laughed, short and bitter. "Overpower me? They wouldn't believe it. Not with the Inquisitors right there." Her eyes flicked to the shadows again. "They're listening. Waiting for me to slip."
*She wavers,* Umbra said. *Use the truth.*
"They're waiting to kill us both," Ethan said softly. "I hear them breathing. If you show weakness, they strike. I know you, Ev. You're terrified."
"Shut up," she whispered, but her eyes filled again. "Of course I'm terrified. My little brother is a monster now. Or something worse. And I have to bring him in or lose everything."
"I'm not a monster," Ethan replied, stepping closer. "I'm angry. The fear's gone. They stole godhood. Killed the progenitor. We're the remnant. The truth they buried."
Evelyn raised the blade slightly, but her arm shook. "Stop talking like that. It makes it harder. I love you. I do. But duty... the empire needs order."
"Order built on lies?" Ethan interrupted, voice rising. "They taught us the Supreme Races ascended fairly. Wisdom and light. But it was murder. Cold blood. You want me to surrender to that?"
She hesitated, silence stretching between them. Footsteps shifted in the shadows. One Inquisitor cleared his throat, a low warning.
"See?" Evelyn said quickly. "They're impatient. Put your hands behind your head. Come quietly. I'll beg for mercy for you."
"Mercy?" Ethan shook his head. "They'll cage me. Study the beast. Kill it. Kill me. And you'll watch, knowing the truth now."
"I don't know the truth," she cried, voice breaking. "I can't afford to. My little girl. If I fail here, they take her too. Indoctrinate her. Make her hunt her own uncle someday."
The words hit Ethan hard. He saw the fear in her face, raw and real. "Then let me go. Whisper it. Run with me. We figure out the rest."
Evelyn looked torn, blade dipping lower. "I can't. I want to. God, part of me wants to. But they've got eyes everywhere. The Church owns us."
*She breaks soon,* Umbra noted. *Prepare.*
"Ev, listen to me," Ethan pleaded, tears in his own eyes now. "Remember the night we ran to the river? Dad was raging. You held my hand the whole way. Said family was stronger than fear."
"I remember," she whispered, voice thick. "I miss that. Miss us. But we're not kids anymore. This beast changed you. I see it in how you stand. Stronger. Different."
"Different because I know now," he said. "The anger feels right. Replaces all the running and hiding. You could know too. Drop the blade. Choose me."
She stared at him, conflict twisting her features. The blade lowered more. Inquisitors shifted again, tension thick in the air.
"I love you, little brother," Evelyn said finally, voice barely carrying. "Run. Now. Before I change my mind."
Ethan's heart leaped. He started to move.
But a shadow detached from the wall behind her. Steel flashed. An Inquisitor struck fast, blade sinking into her back.
Evelyn gasped, eyes wide with shock. "Ethan..."
She crumpled forward as the Inquisitor yanked the weapon free. "Weakness," the man snarled. "The Church does not tolerate it."
Ethan froze in horror, watching his sister fall. The standoff shattered in blood.

The Citadel Of the First
They call it a sanctuary, but walking toward that mile-high tower feels like marching straight into an executioner's parlor while the entire world holds its breath."Ethan, stop walking for a second, look at what is happening to the air around the perimeter," Evelyn cried out, her fingers digging desperately into my arm as she stumbled on the rough black sand of the southern shore."I feel it, Evelyn, it is like walking through wet concrete, but we cannot stop moving now," I panted, my boots dragging heavily against the ground as a strange, heavy pressure pressed down against my skull like an iron band."That is not just air pressure, Ethan, that is a psychic draining field designed to strip the willpower right out of anyone who dares to approach the citadel," Lira gasped, her face draining of all color as she pressed both hands against her temples, her knees buckling slightly beneath her weight."Lira, are you a
Arrival at the Southern Shore
I should have died under ten tons of crushed steel and burning concrete, but Evelyn dragged me out of that sinking nightmare by sheer force of will."Don't you ever, ever pull a stunt like that again, do you hear me, Ethan?" Evelyn sobbed, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she pressed a warm cloth against the bleeding gash on my forehead inside the cramped medical bay of the flagship."I'm right here, Evelyn, I'm breathing, look at me," I whispered, reaching up to gently catch her trembling wrists while the low, rhythmic hum of the ship's engines vibrated through the floorboards beneath us."You nearly didn't come back through that airlock, Ethan," Miller muttered, leaning against the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest, his face pale beneath his stubble. "If Calla hadn't fired the emergency thrusters the second that guardian blew, we'd all be fish food right now.""We made it out, and we brought Shae and the others
Escape from the Submerged Spire
We are going to be buried alive in this metal tomb if you do not run faster! Shae screamed over the deafening roar of grinding steel and exploding conduits."Just keep your feet moving and do not look back at the ceiling, we are almost to the lower lock!" I yelled back, throwing my arm out to catch an older prisoner who tripped over a shattered length of pipe. The corridor behind us was dissolving into a nightmare of fire and rushing seawater. Sparks rained down like blinding golden tears, chewing through the metal floor plates while automated defense turrets mounted in the walls spun wildly, their crimson targeting lenses snapping back and forth in a frantic search for anything breathing."Ethan, duck!" Shae shrieked, hauling me down by my jacket just as a high-velocity burst of plasma fire sheared through the air where my head had been a second before, leaving a smoking crater in the bulkhead."Everyone stay low, crawl if you
Prisoner's of the Spire
You are walking straight into a cage that has no doors, stranger, the young woman whispered, pulling away from my outstretched hand as if my touch would burn her."Every cage has a door if you hit it hard enough," I panted, gripping the heavy iron locking mechanism of her cell with both hands while Umbra channeled a surge of raw thermal heat through my palms. The metal groaned under the pressure, screaming as the internal gears melted into a pool of glowing slag before the heavy door swung outward with a loud, echoing crash."You broke it... you actually broke the seal," she breathed, staring at the open space in front of her with wide, terrified eyes, refusing to step out into the hallway. "Do you have any idea what the machine overseers do to anyone who leaves their designated sector?""They try to kill us, and right now I am returning the favor," I said, stepping inside the small, damp cell and offering her my
Dragged to the depths
The air ripped straight out of my lungs as that metal monster hauled me off the deck and slammed me into the freezing chaos of the sky."Ethan, hold on to something!" Evelyn's voice shrieked from somewhere far below, tearing at my heart before the howling wind drowned it out completely."I am trying, but this thing is tearing my arm out of its socket!" I yelled back into the empty air, though I knew she could never hear me over the screaming storm. The metal talons dug tighter around my waist, pressing the breath from my chest until stars danced behind my eyelids. We weren't just flying through the storm clouds anymore. The machine tilted sharply downward, plunging at a terrifying, headfirst angle straight toward the churning black teeth of the ocean."Hold your breath, host, we are about to hit the water at terminal velocity!" Umbra warned inside my head, the entity's voice sharp with sudden, raw panic."Tell me
Architect of the Void
Water should not scream when it breaks, yet the entire ocean seemed to shriek as those monolithic metal hulls tore through the surface, casting massive sheets of white foam and boiling spray across our decks."Hard to port, turn the bow into them right now or they will slice us in half!" Garrick screamed, his face locked in absolute terror as he whipped the iron wheel around with every ounce of muscle he possessed."We cannot turn fast enough, Garrick, look at the size of those things!" Evelyn cried out, her hands gripping the wooden railing so tightly her knuckles turned stark white as a mountain of dark, reflective steel towered over our starboard side."Don't just stand there staring at them, man the deck cannons, open fire!" Miller roared, sprinting across the tilting planks toward an automated turret while bullets and shrapnel began to rain down around us."It won't do any good, Miller, look at their hulls!" I shouted back
