Richard arrived at the restaurant earlier than expected, stepping inside to find the place already bustling with activity. The scent of freshly cooked meals filled the air, mixing with the soft chatter of customers and the occasional clatter of dishes. It was a lively atmosphere, the kind he had grown used to over the past few weeks.

The first person to notice him was Lily, one of his co-workers. She turned toward him with a bright smile.

“Hi, Richard! You’re right on time today.”

Richard returned the smile, adjusting the strap of his bag. “The lecturer didn’t take up his full time today. He had something else to attend to, and since it was my only class, I decided to come straight here.”

Lily nodded approvingly. “That’s great! We’ve got a lot of customers today, so we could really use the extra hands.”

Richard didn’t mind. He quickly made his way to the staff changing area, swapping his casual clothes for the restaurant’s uniform. He rolled up his sleeves and stepped back into the din

The drive to Reed’s estate was filled with an unusual quiet. Richard’s thoughts kept drifting back to Thomas, to the mystery of the men and the car, but he tried to focus on what Reed had been teaching him. His power—no, the force within him—was still unpredictable, still dangerous. He had to learn to control it, to find a way to master it before it destroyed him, or worse, the people he cared about. When he arrived, Reed was waiting for him, standing by the training area. The tall, imposing figure seemed a world apart from the distractions that weighed on Richard’s mind. The focus in Reed’s eyes was unshakable, and Richard needed that right now. He needed to escape into the clarity of training, to drown out the noise and concentrate solely on what lay ahead.“You’re late,” Reed remarked as Richard approached. There was no malice in his tone, just the usual precision and focus. “But I’ll make exceptions for days like this.”Richard offered a brief smile, trying to push aside the linge

Richard’s footsteps quickened as he moved through the school courtyard after the final bell rang. The school day had barely ended, and yet his mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. He couldn’t shake the image of Thomas’s retreating figure, his avoidance of Richard’s kindness, and now, the strange encounter with the men who had seemingly taken him away.Richard had been walking toward the gates, planning to go home and continue his studies, when he noticed Thomas. The boy’s hunched shoulders, head slightly bowed, and almost invisible presence had caught Richard’s eye. He had hoped to speak with him one last time, to break through the layers of fear and isolation the boy carried. But when Richard reached the courtyard, Thomas was already walking briskly away from the school.Curious, Richard hesitated. It seemed unlike Thomas to leave so quickly. Usually, he lingered after school, sitting alone, withdrawn from the world around him. But today, he appeared to have a sense of urgency in his st

  • Chapter Three Hundred and Eighty-Nine

“Why would you want to help me?” Thomas asked, his voice low and laced with doubt.Richard paused, searching for the right words. “Because I know what it’s like to feel invisible. And I don’t want you to feel like you have to hide anymore. You deserve more than that.”Thomas seemed to weigh Richard’s words carefully, his face unreadable. Then, to Richard’s surprise, he spoke again, but this time, his voice was barely above a whisper.“You don’t know what it’s like,” Thomas muttered, almost to himself. “I’m not like you. I don’t belong here. They’ll never stop. They’ll keep pushing me down.”Richard’s heart went out to him. The boy was defeated before he even had a chance to stand up for himself. Richard knew that feeling, the despair of thinking that there was no way out, that no one would ever care enough to help.“You don’t have to do this alone,” Richard said, his voice steady. “I’m not going to let them keep pushing you down. But you have to let me help. You have to trust me.”Tho

The midday bell rang, signaling the start of lunch, and the school cafeteria quickly filled with the usual clatter of trays, voices, and the mingling scents of food. The buzz of student chatter filled the air, a mix of casual conversation, gossip, and the occasional burst of laughter. Richard, Christabel, Evelyn, Charles, and Oliver made their way to a corner table, the five of them settling into their usual routine. Despite the comfortable familiarity of his friends, Richard’s mind was far from settled. The events of the previous day—the strange encounter with the timid student and the mysterious men—were still gnawing at him. As he sat down and absentmindedly picked at his food, his gaze wandered across the cafeteria. It was then that he saw him again. The boy.He was sitting alone at a table near the far corner, his head lowered slightly as he ate, the kind of posture that seemed to say, “Please don’t notice me.” His clothes were plain, and his demeanor was that of someone who had

The walk from the school to Reed’s estate felt longer than usual. The fading light of the afternoon stretched long shadows across the ground, the soft whispers of wind rustling through the trees.
