Marcus dragged the heavy furniture bundle up the stairs, sweat soaking through his shirt and dripping down his beard. The delivery guy had literally thrown it at him from the doorway without a word.

He pulled out his phone and opened his banking app. The screen glared back at him—four dollars and twelve cents in bright red. He refreshed his phone but the same amount displayed on his screen.

"Problem, Marcus?"

He didn't need to look up. That voice meant trouble. Derek, a junior executive, in the finance department, and his professional tormentor.

The suit Derek wore cost more than Marcus's entire month's salary.

"My deposit's late," Marcus said, keeping his voice level.

"Oh, I know." Derek's grin widened. "I personally told accounting to hold it. I wanted to see your face when you checked your account. Worth every second."

Heat flooded Marcus's face. "Why? I've got bills, Derek. My wife's pregnant."

"Did you hear that?" Derek turned to a cluster of interns loitering nearby, his voice dripping with mock concern. "The errand boy thinks his bills matter!"

They erupted in laughter.

"Someone give him a tissue," one intern called out.

"Wait, he probably can't afford tissues," another added.

"He should use his sleeves in that case," a third one chimed in, pointing. "Look at that shirt. When's the last time that I saw a washing machine?"

Marcus's jaw clenched.

"Marcus, Marcus, Marcus." Derek stepped closer, invading his space. "Maybe if you cleaned the toilets better, we'd pay you on time. But right now? You're lucky we let you breathe the same air as us."

"Those shoes though," an intern with gelled hair snickered. "Did you fish those out of a dumpster? Seriously, there's a sole flapping off."

"Goodwill rejected those," another one said.

"Even the homeless wouldn't take them," a girl in designer heels added, wrinkling her nose.

Derek held up a black folder, savoring the moment. "Anyway, you're not going home yet."

"I can't today." Marcus's voice strained knowing already what this meant.

"It's Vanessa's party and also my unborn baby's gender reveal. Everyone's waiting..."

"Mr. Langford needs this." Derek waved the folder. "In his office. Now."

"Derek, I cannot.."

"I don't care about your little party, Marcus." Derek's eyes went cold. "Mr. Langford wants this delivered to his hand. His exact words? 'Tell that pathetic messenger if he's not in my office in five minutes, he's fired.'"

"But the 9 PM rule," Marcus protested. "Mr. Langford said he'd fire anyone who bothered him after 8:30."

"Today's an exception, dummy." Derek rolled his eyes dramatically. "You think I'd waste my breath talking to you if it wasn't?"

"There has to be someone else."

"You hesitate, you're gone, fired and blacklisted. Good luck feeding that pregnant wife on zero income." Derek patted Marcus's cheek like a dog. "Now run along. Don't keep the king waiting."

Marcus swallowed hard. He couldn't lose this job. Not now. Not with the baby coming.

"Fine."

"Good boy." Derek's smile was poison.

Marcus walked toward the executive floor, each step heavier than the last. If Langford was in a meeting, he'd leave the folder and bolt. He'd still make it to Vanessa's party. He had to.

The executive floor was silent. Too silent. Marcus moved through the dim hallway, his footsteps barely audible.

He approached Langford's office door and stopped.

A sound slithered through the cracks in the door.

Muffled at first. Then clearer, a gasp, then a moan.

Marcus's hand froze on the folder.

He knew that voice, no, it had to be impossible. Without a sound, Marcus stepped closer.

Another moan, too clear to be mistaken.

His heart hammered against his ribs. His knees weakened.

It couldn't be. Vanessa barely visited him at work anymore because of the stares, the judgment. She was pregnant with their child. Her business was doing well. Why would she?

He had to be wrong.

His hand found the doorknob. He needed to confirm this wasn't her. It couldn't be her.

Marcus pushed the door open.

Time stopped.

Victor Langford was bent over his desk. Beneath him, legs wrapped around his waist, was Vanessa.

His wife stood before, eyes all white out and moaning like a p**n star.

They both jerked at the interruption. Vanessa's eyes found Marcus in the doorway. There wasn't the slightest hint of shame nor guilt, just irritation.

"Are you serious right now?" she snapped, breathless.

Marcus couldn't speak. His throat closed. His world collapsing.

"You can't stop now, baby," Vanessa whined, pulling Victor back down. "I was so close. So fucking close."

"Vanessa—" Marcus's voice cracked.

"Shut up, Marcus." She didn't even look at him. Her focus was entirely on Victor. "Please don't stop, baby. Please. I need this."

Victor smirked, not bothering to cover himself. "Should've knocked, messenger boy."

Vanessa almost died out of desperation, she couldn't hold herself any longer. And quickly, she slid Victor's hard c**k back into her with a moan and rode him dangerously.

Marcus's heart tore right apart.

CHAPTER FOURTEENIt was as though Vanessa’s breath had ceased, but she was able to get a grip on herself.“Did you just speak to me like that?” She asked, but Marcus paid her no more attention. The latter turned to Gary, and then he took a deep breath.“Who did you say you are again?” He asked, holding onto the smirk all over his face.“Who the hell do you think you are to ask him that?!” Victor snapped, pointing Marcus in the face.“Do you know what he is capable of doing to you, Marcus?! You should be afraid right now.”“But I am not…” Marcus remarked, still staring at the middle-aged man.“I am sure you can speak on your own behalf. You don’t need anyone to talk on your behalf.”Gary snorted, and then he slowly turned to face Victor who almost looked away immediately.“I am so sorry that he insulted you, Mr. Whitehead….”“No…” Gary stopped Victor before he could continue, taking a deep breath.“You don’t need to worry about me. I will take care of him myself. He is nothing.” He ret

CHAPTER THIRTEEN“Mr. Whitehead??!” Victor called out again, drawing the immediate attention of the middle-aged man, causing him to stare at him while he struggled through the distance.“Victor Langford?”“Yes! It’s me!” Victor increased his pace as soon as he realized that the man had recognized him, marching as though he was the host of the event.Victor had to stop getting closer when the two guards standing next to the middle-aged man tried to stop him, putting out their hands.“It’s okay. Let him through.” Gary signaled to the guards, and after they had given Victor one last look, they stepped out of the way slowly.“I wasn’t certain if it was you, Mr. Whitehead. But I am very glad that I have seen you.” Victor chuckled softly, and then he extended his right hand toward Gary for a handshake. He sighed in relief as soon as Gary obliged him, getting rid of the doubt that was simmering inside him.“What are you doing here, Victor?” Gary asked, admiring the fancy suit Victor was putt

CHAPTER TWELVE Marcus looked up, and then he scoffed. He couldn’t hide it, the spite he felt for the woman he once called his own. “You wish.” He blurted, causing the couple to gasp.Vanessa covered her mouth while she turned to look at Victor, urging him to do something about her ex-husband’s unusual audacity. Victor stepped forward after a few seconds, and Vanessa felt a bit relaxed. She adjusted her dress, nodding while she waited for what was about to happen. Victor snorted, and while he was still boiling with disdain, he repeated his threat from earlier. “It’s either you leave this place on your own or I am going to ask the Head of Security of this place to throw you out.” He waited, hoping that his words were going to be able to spark some fear inside Marcus. At that time, they had drawn the attention of almost everyone in the hall. All eyes were on them, accompanied by the murmurings about the event that was meant to start in a couple of minutes. Marcus sighed heavily,

CHAPTER ELEVEN Marcus saw them sauntering from where he was seated calmly, his eyes moving slowly away from them. But he was unbothered, barely moved by the threat he saw glittering in their eyes.Vanessa seemed more eager to get to him, and the only thing that stopped her from moving ahead of Victor was her protruding belly. She was enraged, firing shots of disdain from a distance. Their movement quietly drew the attention of some of the guests, eyes flashing across the aisle. Finally, they were standing before Marcus, and it was clear that a hot drama was about to unfold. Tension, grew, chests puffed, and bloodshot eyes burned with piercing glares. Marcus took a deep breath, and then he finally took a sip from the glass he was holding. Then he smacked, looking up at the couple for the first time since they stood before him. Vanessa sighed the moment she saw that Marcus had finally recognized their presence, almost thinking that they had become invisible to him.She grunted, t

"Ladies and gentlemen, the announcement will begin shortly. Please take your seats."The voice crackled over the speakers, professional and clear.Victor exhaled. His shoulders sagged for just a moment before he caught himself and straightened. Relief washed over his face, quickly masked by forced confidence. The crowd's attention shifted immediately. Conversations turned from Marcus to the impending announcement. People began drifting toward their seats, the spectacle forgotten in favor of whatever was about to happen.Victor seized the moment. He raised his voice, loud enough for everyone still within earshot to hear."There's no need to stoop to the level of a peasant."Heads turned back toward him. He had their attention again, but on his terms now."I'm the CEO of a major company. My reputation speaks for itself." Victor straightened his tie, every inch the confident executive. "I've built success. Created jobs. Contributed to this industry."Vanessa stepped closer to him, her vo

He straightened his shoulders, smoothed his tie, and let a smile spread across his face.He leaned close to Vanessa, voice low. "What's he doing here?"Vanessa's grip tightened on his arm. "I don't know, but we can't let him ruin this."Victor's mind raced. Marcus shouldn't be here. Couldn't be here. This was an event for business elite, for people who mattered. Not for messengers who delivered packages and mopped floors. But if Marcus thought he could show up and embarrass them, he was wrong.Victor would strike first. He raised his voice, loud enough for the people nearby to hear. Friendly. Surprised. Like running into an old acquaintance."Marcus? Marcus Hayes? Is that really you?"Heads turned. Conversations paused.
