Security rushed into the ICT room in a jiffy, right after the man standing in front of Sam called. Sam later found out his name was Matt. He was part of the IT team and had gone on break. As the security came in, their heavy boots pounded against the tiled floor, their presence instantly suffocating the already tense air.

“Arrest him!” Matt barked, still chewing. His voice was sharp with urgency as he pointed directly at Sam. “He’s the fraud! He came into this room without authorization—he’s the one hacking us!”

The accusation hit the room like a spark in dry grass.

Immediately, the security team moved into action, surrounding Sam before he could take a step back. Hands reached for him—firm and unyielding—ready to drag him away.

“I am here on a job,” Sam said, his voice steady despite the chaos closing in around him. His eyes flickered briefly to the system screen behind them, tension tightening his jaw. “And if I don’t continue, the entire system will crash.”

A few of the guards hesitated, exchanging uncertain glances.

Matt let out a sharp, mocking laugh.

“So you came here to crash the system?” he shot back, his tone dripping with scorn. He turned toward the screen, waving a dismissive hand. “Nothing is going to crash. He was obviously trying to steal funds.”

His gaze swept over Sam from head to toe, lingering on the janitor’s uniform with open ridicule.

“Besides,” Matt continued, his lips curling into a smirk, “how can he be here on a tech job dressed like a janitor? Are you serious right now? Who believes this dumb story?”

“Did anyone hear about a new tech guy who wears janitor’s clothes?” he mocked, turning to the security guards.

The room fell into an uneasy silence. No one responded.

The head of security, Marcus, stepped forward, his expression guarded but firm. He looked from Matt to Sam, clearly weighing the situation.

“Are you sure about this, Mr. Matt?” he asked carefully.

Matt’s head snapped toward him, irritation flashing across his face.

“Are you questioning my authority?” he demanded, his voice rising. “I said I saw this guy trying to steal information from the system.”

The tension thickened.

Marcus hesitated for only a second before nodding once. “Alright.”

His voice carried reluctant acceptance.

“I will fix whatever mess he’s made,” Matt added quickly, stepping toward the system, eagerness barely concealed beneath his composure. “Just arrest him.”

“Arrest him,” Marcus ordered, pointing at Sam.

A slow, satisfied smile spread across Matt’s face as he sat down and began undoing everything Sam had already started working on.

He scoffed, glancing briefly at the guards. “Can you imagine the childish scheme he tried to pull here…”

Marcus didn’t respond. Neither did the others.

Instead, Sam spoke.

“That ‘childish scheme’ is what will expose the truth.”

“Oh, shut up,” Matt snapped. “How would a thief like you know anything?”

He turned back to Marcus, unable to hide his excitement.

“Please inform Ma’am Susan,” he said, “that I found the culprit. I’ll be expecting my reward.”

Sam’s eyes narrowed slightly as he watched him.

So that was it.

A reward.

No wonder he was so desperate. So loud. So certain.

Sam exhaled slowly, then brought his hands forward without resistance, allowing the guards to cuff him. The cold metal snapped around his wrists, but his expression didn’t change.

“Arrest me,” he said quietly, “but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

One of the guards tightened his grip, preparing to escort him out.

Then—

The screen flickered once.

And went completely black.

At first, Matt smiled. “It’ll be back up… just a glitch.”

But then he started tapping the keyboard rapidly—almost frantically.

His fingers hovered mid-air, his confidence collapsing in an instant.

“What… what is going on?” he muttered, panic creeping into his voice as he stared at the blank screen.

The system wasn’t responding.

There were no commands or data showing anymore.

He turned sharply to Sam. “What did you do?”

Sam met his gaze, calm despite the cuffs around his wrists.

“Me?” he said evenly. “I told you, didn’t I?”

Just then, the door burst open, and more members of the IT team rushed in.

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind Blackwood, the latch sounding remarkably loud in the sudden vacuum he left behind. For three agonized seconds, no one in the boardroom moved. The silence was thick, heavy with the aftershock of a king being dethroned. Then, Mr. Webb lowered his pen. The sharp, metallic clink against the polished mahogany signaled that the theater was officially over. The actors could drop their masks. "Right then," Webb said, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses and leaning back. "Now that the atmospheric pressure has dropped, Miss Devanchi—the data breach. Let's have the unvarnished version. No corporate spin. Just the damage." Susan didn't immediately answer. She kept her eyes glued to the thick manila folder in front of her, her manicured fingers slowly tracing the sharp edge of a spreadsheet. Beneath the table, her knees trembled slightly. Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird, a delayed reaction to the adrenaline spike Blackwo

Sam stood alone in the center of the cold, dimly lit room. The silence around him was suffocating, but he forced himself to remain calm. He was an innocent man, and he firmly believed that justice would prevail. When Susan returned, everything would be sorted out. She knew his character, and she would immediately clear his name. With that comforting thought in mind, he took a deep breath and decided to wait patiently. He heard the heavy thud of the door closing as Marcus left the room. Sam was left with nothing but his thoughts. Suddenly, a sharp sound broke the silence. His phone beeped in his hand. Sam looked down at the screen, hoping for a message that could save him, but his heart sank. The screen flashed a final warning before going completely black. It was shutting down permanently. The battery was dead. Sam sighed heavily, feeling a wave of helplessness wash over him. He cut an isolated figure as he looked up at the barren ceiling. He was completely cut off from the outs

  • Chapter Twenty - Five

The manager stopped a few feet from Vanessa, his smile practiced and unbothered. He held a tablet tucked under his arm, his demeanor suggesting he had dealt with dozens of people like Vanessa today—people who thought a suit and a title granted them immunity from hospital policy. "I’m Mr. Henderson, the administrator on duty," he said, his voice smooth. "I understand there’s an issue with the care of one of our patients, Veronica?" Vanessa didn't offer a polite smile in return. She didn't have the patience for it. "An issue? My mother has been begging for medical attention for hours, and your staff has done nothing but dismiss her. She’s in pain, she’s confused, and your nurses are acting like she’s a nuisance." Henderson glanced at the tablet, his expression remaining perfectly neutral. "I see. Let me pull up her chart and see what the attending physician has—" "I don't need a chart," Vanessa snapped, her frustration finally boiling over. "I need her moved. I need a specia

"Something wrong?" Vanessa asked the moment she stepped through the door. She didn't even wait for an answer. She already felt it. The room had that kind of silence — the heavy, uneasy kind that pressed against your chest and told you something wasn't right before anyone said a word. Her mother was sitting up in bed, and the second she saw Vanessa, her hands came forward.Vanessa crossed the room quickly and took them. The grip caught her off guard. It was too tight, not the grip of someone who was fine."The doctors…" Veronica started, her voice low, strained. "They keep telling me nothing is wrong. Every single one of them. I've been saying since I got here that something doesn't feel right, and they just nod. They don't write anything down. They look at me like I'm imagining it."Vanessa frowned, really looking at her now. Studying her face, the tension in her jaw, the way her fingers kept shifting like she couldn't settle. It didn't make sense. Not after what Elena had said."Are

  • Chapter Twenty-Three

Vanessa had called Sam three times. Three times, and every single one went to voicemail. Vanessa stood in the middle of her living room staring at the screen until it went dark, and then she set the phone down slowly, deliberately, the way you set something down when what you actually want to do is throw it. She wasn't going to do this. She wasn't going to stand here unraveling over a man who couldn't even be bothered to pick up. She grabbed her keys and her bag. Her mother needed her. That was the only thing that mattered right now. The drive to the hospital was too quiet, and that was the problem. Quiet meant her brain had room to wander, and her brain had no business wandering anywhere near the thoughts it kept trying to drag her toward. She turned the radio on, then off again two minutes later because even that felt like too much noise. She just drove, both hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, trying very hard to think about absolutely nothing. It didn't work. She thought

The silence that followed was almost comfortable. Almost.Susan had just drawn breath to speak when Blackwood's voice cut across the room."Well." He set both palms flat on the table, a man who needed the world to feel the weight of him arriving. "Since no one else is apparently going to say anything."He let it hang there. An invitation that no one accepted."I will." He looked around the room slowly, the way men like him did when they wanted an audience to know they were being observed. "I think we are all sitting here allowing ourselves to be managed. And I for one am not comfortable with that.""How so?" Susan asked. Her voice was even. "You came for a meeting, Mr Blackwood. The least you could have done is let me address the situation at hand. But you haven't allowed that." She held his gaze. "For what it's worth, you are welcome to be uncomfortable. That is not my concern.""There it is." He pointed at her, almost triumphant. "You see that? You see the way she speaks to people?"
