CHAPTER 14
Brian snickered under his breath. Amanda was too worried to care, while Doctor Benson looked genuinely bewildered. Meanwhile, an unbothered Marcus calmly lowered Sir Edward’s head back onto the pillow.Coleman pointed at him furiously. “You did this! You did something to him earlier, didn’t you? You purposely made him react that way to my treatment! You made him vomit just to humiliate me!”Marcus looked at him with complete indifference. “I didn’t do anything to your treatment.”“Don’t lie to me!” Doctor Coleman seethed, the veins on his forehead threatening to pop out.“You’re the one who injected him,” Marcus replied calmly. “Everyone in this room saw it.”Coleman’s face reddened even more. “But you—”“My needles never touched him before you arrived,” Marcus continued, his voice even calmer than before. “Remember that you knocked them out of my hand before I could do anything. So tell me, what exactly could I have done to make him react to your treatment?”“I don’t know!” Doctor C
CHAPTER 13
Dr. Coleman froze. And for several seconds, he simply stood beside the bed, gawking at Sir Edward as the old man’s body jerked uncontrollably. The confidence he had moments earlier had disappeared, and was now replaced with fear. His eyes moved frantically between Sir Edward and the heart-rate monitor as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.“This… this has never happened before,” he muttered.Brian grabbed ahold of his shoulder and shook him hard. “Doctor, what the hell is happening right now? Do something!”Coleman merely blinked at him.“My grandfather is dying!” Brian shouted. “Do something, Doctor Coleman!”“I… um…” Coleman stammered, struggling to find the right words. “Well, I think… perhaps we should—”“Dr. Coleman!” Dr. Benson had to interrupt. “Sir Edward is going into cardiac arrest. If we don’t do something now, we’re going to lose him!”Despite the urgency in the room, Doctor Coleman still looked completely lost. But that was all Marcus needed. Another memory suddenl
CHAPTER 12
Everyone in the room turned toward the sound of the voice.Standing adjacent to Marcus was a middle-aged man of average height. He was balding, wore thin-framed glasses, and had a neatly trimmed salt-and-pepper beard. He was dressed simply in a brown sweater and khaki trousers, and carried a brown leather briefcase. The moment the doctor saw him, relief washed over his face.“Dr. Coleman! You made it right on time,” he exclaimed as he hurried toward him. “Thank you for coming. I honestly can’t tell you how relieved I am to see you.”Dr. Simon Coleman gave him a brief nod of acknowledgment before his attention shifted to the bed.His eyes moved from Sir Edward to the tray of needles beside him, then finally settled on Marcus.“What is going on here?” he asked, his expression growing more serious. “What exactly did I just walk into? What was this man trying to do?”The doctor quickly explained everything.“I’m so glad you’re here, Doctor Coleman. This young man claimed that he could sav
CHAPTER 11
The doctor stepped out of the ward and pulled his phone from the pocket of his lab coat.“Hello, Dr. Simon. How are you? It’s been a long time,” he greeted the person on the other end.Marcus remained hidden behind the wall and listened.“I need an important favor,” the doctor continued. “Sir Edward Henderson, the patriarch of the Henderson family, has stage-four cancer. The cancerous cells are mutating extremely fast, and his condition is getting worse by the hour.”The doctor paused, listening to the response before continuing.“Yes, I know you’re attending the convention, but this is serious. He belongs to one of Eastwood’s Platinum-tier families, and his family is willing to reward you generously if you can help him.”Another pause followed. The doctor suddenly let out a sigh of relief. “You will? All right, thank you. I’ll be waiting. Please come as quickly as you can.”The call ended, and despite the fact that Marcus’s body had begun to ache from leaning against the wall for so
CHAPTER 10
The woman stared at Marcus as the hot coffee dripped from her clothes onto the floor. “Are you blind?” she snapped, looking down at herself. “Couldn’t you watch where you were going? Look at my clothes now!” Marcus blinked, then quickly looked down at the damage he had caused. She was wearing a white crop top underneath a blue and black varsity jacket, blue jeans, and black boots. The coffee had soaked through the front of her white top, leaving a large brown stain across it. “I’m sorry,” Marcus apologized heartily. “I should have watched where I was going.” “Your apology doesn’t fix anything,” she fired back. “What am I supposed to do now? Walk around like this?” Marcus glanced at the stain again. “I can ask if the hospital has a laundry service,” he offered. “Maybe they can help clean it.” “Oh, just shut up, you pathetic piece of shit.” She glared at him. “Do you really think that fixes anything?” Her eyes moved over his bruised, disheveled appearance and she scoffed. “Looki
CHAPTER 9
Marcus slowly opened his eyes, and the first thing he saw was a bright white ceiling, then white walls. He blinked a few times, trying to clear his vision, and soon realized he was lying on a hospital bed. He tried to move, but pain immediately spread through his body. A wince fell from his lips as he stopped and looked down at himself. His chest and stomach were wrapped in bandages, his left arm was covered in a cast, and when he raised his other hand to his head, his fingers touched the bandage wrapped around his forehead. He frowned, trying to understand what had happened. “What happened to me?” A doctor standing nearby noticed that he was awake and turned toward him. The young woman beside the doctor also looked over and rushed toward the bed. “Oh my God, sir,” she gasped. “You’re finally awake. Are you all right? How do you feel?” Marcus observed her for a moment. She was a young brunette with her hair tied into a messy bun. She wore a simple top and jeans, with a handbag
