Johnny didn’t look back as he stepped into the building.

He didn’t need to.

He could still feel the caretaker standing there, frozen, mouth hanging open like something. Johnny heard the door close behind him, the sound dull and familiar. Too familiar.

The hallway smelled the same.

Old cleaning liquid. Dust. Something damp that never really went away no matter how many times they tried to scrub it out. The lights flickered once, then steadied, buzzing softly overhead.

Johnny paused.

They sat across from each other. The first glass came quickly. Then the second. Then another.Johnny leaned back slightly, staring at the drink in his hand. Towel barely on.Sophie watched him for a moment, her legs crossed, skirt riding high on her thighs. “Are you okay?” she asked, leaning forward so her blouse strained tighter.Johnny let out a quiet breath.“No,” he said honestly. “Not really.”He took another sip.“I just….don’t want to think about it right now.”There was a pause. The room felt quieter than before. Not empty. Just… stillThen he looked at her. “You know what?” he said. “Tell me about yourself.”Sophie blinked. “Me?”“Yeah,” Johnny said. “I just realized I don’t really know anything about you.” Sophie looked at him for a moment. Then looked down at her glass, her fingers tracing it slowly. “There’s not much to tell.”“I doubt that,” Johnny replied, smirking.Silence stretched. Thick with heat. “…Alright,” she said quietly.Sophie still did not start talking

  • Chapter 164: For the best

Johnny did not wait to see how the conversation ended. The moment the officers stepped fully into the room and Margaret’s attention shifted away from him, he moved. Quiet. Careful. Invisible. He couldn’t force her. If he tried to drag her out of here now, it would only make things worse. It would look exactly like what she feared.Like he was someone dangerous. Someone she should run from.Johnny’s hands clenched slightly, as he slipped past the doorway without a sound. One step. Then another.By the time the officers began speaking again, he was already gone.---Johnny stood still for a moment just outside the building, his hands in his pockets, his shoulders slightly tense.Margaret’s voice replayed again in his head.“Who are you, Johnny?”He exhaled slowly.“Yeah…” he muttered under his breath. “Good question.”“I don’t even know,” he muttered. And that was the problem. He kept walking.Step after step.Until the answer, or something close to it, started forming in his mind.May

  • Chapter 162: Maggie

Johnny’s chest tightened.“Maggie—”The room felt smaller than before. Not because anything had changed, but because of the space between them.Johnny stood a few steps away from Margaret, his hand now lowered to his side. The urgency in his chest had not reduced, but something else had taken its place.Hesitation.Margaret hugged her arms lightly around herself, as if trying to steady her own thoughts. Her breathing was not fast, but it wasn’t calm either.“Please,” Johnny said again, softer this time. “We have to go.”Margaret shook her head.“I’m sorry,” she replied, and this time there was more firmness in her voice. “I can’t just walk out with you like that, when I… I don’t understand what’s happening.”Johnny’s hand dropped slowly.“We don’t have time,” he said. “Please, just trust me.”But even as he said it, he could see it.That word—Trust.Right now, it meant nothing to her.Not after everything she had just seen.“No,” she cut in, her voice firmer now, though it still trem

  • Chapter 161: Where would he go?

“Find him!”Commissioner Rhoades’ voice cut through the hallway like a whip.“I want every exit covered. Check the cameras. Check the vents. Check the damn walls if you have to. He could not have gone far!”The officers moved at once, boots echoing loudly against the tiled floor as they scattered in different directions. Radios crackled. Doors opened and slammed shut. The entire station, which had been calm just minutes ago, now felt like a place under attack.Rhoades stood in the middle of it all, his jaw tight, his eyes burning with a mix of anger and something else he refused to name.Confusion.No.Not confusion.Something worse.Loss of control. He turned back toward the interrogation room again, as if expecting Johnny to suddenly reappear in the chair, hands cuffed, like nothing had happened. But the room remained empty. The cuffs still hung loosely from the table.Mocking him.Rhoades clenched his fists.Impossible.There was no way a man could just vanish like that. Not in a

  • Chapter 160: The Interrogation

The room felt smaller the longer Johnny sat in it.At first, it had just seemed like any other interrogation room. Plain walls. A metal table. Two chairs facing each other. A single light overhead that didn’t flicker, but didn’t feel completely stable either. Now, after sitting there for a while, it felt different.Tighter.Like the walls had slowly moved closer without anyone noticing.Johnny rested his cuffed hands on the table, his fingers loosely locked together. The metal around his wrists was cold, but he barely felt it anymore. His attention wasn’t on the cuffs. It was on the situation. This was he had been arrested. And somehow, every single time, it had been for something he didn’t do.A faint breath escaped him.His gaze drifted toward the door.Justice had nothing to do with it.It never did.Even now, sitting here, accused of killing a man like Valentine Orlov…Johnny’s lips curved slightly. If he had killed him, would that really be a crime?A man who butchered people. • Chapter 159: The Arrest

The words did not make sense at first. They felt misplaced, like something that had been said too early, or in the wrong place entirely.“Johnny Steele, you are under arrest for the murder of Valentine Orlov.”For a brief moment, everything slowed.Johnny did not react immediately. His eyes stayed on the man in front of him, studying him carefully, almost calmly.Commissioner Rhoades.Rhea’s husband.Of course.A quiet breath left Johnny’s nose as recognition settled in. The last time they had met had been short, but it had been enough. Men like Rhoades were not hard to read.Clean on the outside.Dirty where it mattered.Rhoades stood with the same controlled posture, his uniform sharp, his presence firm. There was a faint smile on his lips, but it wasn’t friendly. It was the kind of smile that came from thinking everything was already under control.Like this had already ended.Johnny tilted his head slightly. “You’re arresting me… for murder?”His tone was not loud, but it carried.
