The glamorous Carter family villa was brightly lit and extravagantly decorated with colorful ribbons. The ambience fully described the festive mood of this atmosphere as tonight was the Carter family gathering banquet celebration of the New Year.

There were several luxury cars such as Mercedes-Benzes, Audi, BMW and many other expensive cars parked inside the compound which belonged to various members of the Carter family.

Every notable member of the Carter family all were present at the main villa to give their new year wishes and greetings to the family’s patriach; Benjamin Carter.

Their attendance was under the disguise of celebrating the New Year but their real motive was to also curry Benjamins favor by gifting him with various expensive and luxurious presents.

Meanwhile, as everyone was partying inside the villa and enjoying the ongoing party,a shabby looking car was being parked inside the compound alongside the other luxury cars.

Shortly, a beautiful blonde lady stepped out of this shabby vehicle. She had a devastated expression on her face, feeling ashamed of how odd her car looked among the rest of the other vehicles that were parked next to her car.

She also desired to own a luxury car as well but that was just wishful thinking because her reality was that she couldn't afford to buy one.

She sighed helplessly at her pathetic situation.

It was also at this moment that a taxi pulled over right in front of the villa and Chris alighted the vehicle and he immediately rushed into the premises.

As soon as he entered the Villa premises he caught sight of a beautiful woman standing at a distance.

Without hesitation, Chris walked up to the lady while smiling. “Eva, I'm finally here. I'm sorry for keeping you waiting out here.” Chris said in an apologetic tone.

Eva's eyebrows furrowed deeply forming a frown on her face. “Where the hell have you been all day?! You should realize how important today is but you still have the audacity to arrive late. All the other family members have already arrived a long time ago and now because of you we are going to be the last ones to arrive.” She reprimanded Chris in a harsh tone.

“I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to take so long.” Chris hurriedly explained..

Eva let out a tired breath and waved her pale hands at Chris' face. “Enough. I am not in the mood to listen to any of your silly excuses.” She snapped curtly, the harshness in her voice made it very evident that she was in a very displeased mood.

“Did you manage to get a gift for grandfather?” She queried Chris as that was her most concerning issue.

Chris nodded. “Of course, I wouldn't forget something that important,” he responded, showing a sealed box in his hands to eva.

Chris and Eva were both married couples. To put it more accurately, it was an arranged marriage that was initially set up by Catherine Carter the previous matriarch and Eva’s great-grandmother.

Although the majority of the Carter family members including Eva's parents were against the marriage, back then nobody dared to express their dissatisfaction about it because they couldn't go against the helmsman order.

The wedding caused a sensation throughout Brooklyn because Evangeline Carter, the most beautiful woman in the county had gotten married to a nobody that was picked up by the Matriarch of the Carter family.

It was a ridiculous farce that was well known in the upper circles of Brooklyn.

However, Catherine was the only individual that knew one of Chris' secret identities as the disciple of James Wade, the leader of the world's formidable mercenary organization called ‘Olympus’.

A year ago, Chris sustained an injury on a deadly mission and was still being targeted by enemies. As a result, his master, James Wade made an offer to Catherine to allow Chris to marry into the Carter family in order to stay hidden.

Catherine had agreed to this request in order to repay the favor she once owed James in the past. Besides, it wasn't a bad deal for her since in the future the safety of the Carter family was guaranteed under the protection of Olympus.

Unfortunately, a few months after the wedding, Catherine Carter lost her life to a sickness. As such, Chris was plagued with the stigma of being a jinx. There wasn't much that was known about Chris' background but many believed him to just be a lowly orphan.

As a result, Chris was also labeled as the useless matrilocal Son-In-Law and a piece of garbage.

Eva was relieved to see the sealed box in Chris' hand. She always snorted in disdain whenever she recalled the moment her great grandmother instructed her to always treat Chris well because he was such a rare talent.

There was never a time Chris was able to do something right and he had always caused problems for her ever since they got married. He had also made no significant achievements and accomplishments in the last five years that he had been married to Tessia.

Her marriage to Chris had a negative impact on her reputation. There were countless times where she had been ridiculed because of him.

As a result, Eva was worried about Chris screwing up today at such a special event in the presence of all her relatives.

”It is important that we leave a good impression on grandpa today so try not to do anything that would embarrass me as well as our family.” She warned in a firm tone.

Chris nodded. “Of course, I promise to behave well today.” He responded confidently, flashing a smile on his face.

Eva stared at Chris for a few seconds with a disdainful expression. She always hated how he nonchalantly smiled at everything like an idiot.

“You should have worn a better outfit. It's quite embarrassing for you to have a shabby appearance at such a social event," she remarked.

“This is the best one I've got. I wore it today because it's a special occasion.” Chris replied.

Eva sighed in frustration after hearing Chris's response. It was too late now to do anything about it. “Let's head in then.” She remarked before she turned around and headed inside the villa.

Chris nodded and obediently followed Eva without any complaints as they both marched into the villa.

Eva could sense the spiteful gaze directed towards her and Chris as soon as they entered the spacious hall where all the family members were gathered but she completely ignored them all. She had already been used to it after being ridiculed occasionally.

She took a glance at Chris and realized he was just smiling at her indifferently as if he was unaware of the current situation.

This made her groan in frustration but she didn't want to dwell on that issue as she focused her attention on leaving a good impression on her grandfather.

“You're quite shameless, Eva. How could you be the last one to arrive considering that you are the eldest among the youngest descendants of the family?” Eric queried with an ugly sneer on his face.

Eric was Eva's younger cousin who was likely set to become the heir of the Carter family because he was Ben's most favored grandchild.

Originally, Eva should have been the next heir because she was from the main branch of the Parker family since her father Bruce Carter was Benjamin’s eldest son but unfortunately he was involved in a tragic accident that left him paralyzed.

As a result, Bruce was excluded from the succession list because appointing a cripple as patriarch would ruin the family's reputation.

The fact that Eva was a female jeopardized her chances of also bearing the title of being the next heir. She also doesn't have as high a status in the family because of her marriage to Chris.

In the end, Eric gained the upper hand in the race for succession and has always enjoyed special privileges. This also made him look down on and act very disrespectfully towards Eva.

“There was a bit of traffic on the way. I'm also aware that I should have been more diligent..” Eva explained stoically by making up a casual excuse because she didn't want to give Eric the chance to mock Chris by letting him know Chris was partly responsible for her late arrival to the event.

“Ha….You and that useless husband of yours were negligent indeed. You are both lucky that grandpa hasn't made his entrance

before you arrived.” Eric probed.

“It's totally my fault. I was unable to get a cab on time.” Chris interjected, hoping to prevent Eva from being slandered.

“Watch your words, Eric. I won't condone your insulting remarks.” Eva warned, directing a stern gaze to Eric.

“I was only stating facts.” Eric said as he nonchalantly shrugged his shoulders unfazed by Eva ’s warning. He caught sight of the small bag Chris was holding in his hand. “Please, don't tell me that is actually the present you are intending on gifting grandpa,” he asked with a questioning gaze.

“Yes, it was specifically chosen from an antique shop .” Chris answered proudly.

Everyone was suddenly in a state of shock after hearing Chris’s response. On the other hand, each of them had spent several thousands of dollars to buy a suitable gift for Ben from luxurious branded stores.

Even Eva found herself being utterly dumbfounded. A week before this event she had wanted to buy a new year gift for Ben herself but Chris had stopped her from doing so by assuring her that he would take care of it.

Eva knew that it was an absurd idea to believe Chris because she knew that he had no money. Nonetheless, she still gave him some money, choosing to trust him to handle it because he seemed very determined to accomplish this task, however, she was now regretting her decision.

The fight erupted. Mason attacked with reckless fury, slashing and lunging with the blade, each movement a desperate attempt to escape, to hurt, to reclaim what he believed was stolen. Chris sidestepped fluidly, moving like water over stone, countering with a spinning kick that sent Mason staggering back, momentarily unbalanced. The two men collided in a deadly dance of fists, elbows, and knees, every blow a symphony of violence honed by years of brutal training. Each strike carried more than physical force; it was rage, obsession, betrayal, and love entwined, the culmination of a history of ambition, rivalry, and heartbreak. “You destroyed me!” Mason roared mid-strike, slashing at Chris with the dagger, each swing more frantic than the last. “You took everything I deserved!” Chris dodged the attack, letting the blade slice past his shoulder by inches, his muscles coiling like steel cables. He drove a knee into Mason’s ribs with surgical precision. “And you destroyed yourself!”

But no agony could override the fire burning inside his chest. Mason wasn’t escaping. Not while Chris still drew breath. He moved upward, one step at a time, methodically scanning the environment the way only a seasoned operative could. His gaze tracked every scrap of debris scattered along the stairwell. Twisted railings. Loose bolts. Shattered grates. Even shattered glass that crunching under his boots. All potential traps. All weapons that Mason could exploit. The air tasted metallic—like the inside of a dying machine. Halfway up, a hulking silhouette lunged out from behind a flight of stairs. A mercenary. The last one Mason had left behind to stall him. The brute swung a metal pipe with enough force to dent the wall. The air screamed as the weapon cut through it. Chris reacted on instinct—droppin

The warehouse had fallen into a chaotic, almost oppressive silence, punctuated only by the distant groans of wounded mercenaries and the soft, ominous hiss of dust settling over shattered crates and broken machinery. Smoke clung to the air like a living thing, curling in thin, gray tendrils around overturned metal shelves and debris-strewn floors. The stench of gunpowder and scorched concrete hung thickly, filling Chris’s lungs with every ragged inhale. His chest heaved violently as he leaned against a fractured steel beam, the cold, jagged metal biting into his bruised shoulder. Pain radiated sharply through his ribs with every breath, a scorching reminder of the savage blows he had endured. Blood seeped through his torn shirt, the dark stain spreading with a life of its own, yet he barely noticed. Amidst the agony, amidst the storm of physical torment, one thought anchored him: Eva. She was pressed against the concrete floor a few meters away, trembling as though the very air its

His manic grin widened even further. The rod arced down, a metallic predator intent on ending Chris in an instant. Pain had already lanced through his shoulder and back, but he remained rigid, Eva’s eyes locked on his. She gasped, terrified, trembling, yet her gaze carried trust—a fragile lifeline in the maelstrom of chaos. And then— Then—a sharp, deafening crack split the air. The pipe flew out of mason’s hands and in the next split second one of Mason’s lackeys guarding Eva crumpled to the floor, a dark spray blossoming across the concrete. “Sniper,” one of the soldiers yelled. Chris’s head snapped toward the direction the bullet came from and allowed himself a brief moment of gratitude, a spark of hope flaring in the storm of adre

Chris’s pulse hammered. “Chris…” Mason whispered, tone dropping into cold, predatory calm. “Killing you would be easy. Too easy. The metallic rod collided with Chris’s shoulder with a sickening, bone-shattering crunch that echoed through the hollow construction tower. The skeletal frame of the construction tower jutted into the night like the exposed ribs of some fallen titan. Rusted beams crisscrossed overhead, serrated edges catching the moonlight like jagged teeth ready to swallow anyone who dared step inside. Shattered windows gaped open across the tower’s facade, black and hollow like the eye sockets of a long-dead corpse. Even before Chris entered, the building breathed dread. The faint, rhythmic drip of water echoed through the hollow interior—slow, deliberate, almost like the tower itself was counting down. The air was thick with rust, mildew, damp concrete, and the metallic stench of old machinery. It felt like walking into the rotting heart of a nightmare. Chris moved cautiously through the debris-strewn floor, boots crunching over broken glass and twisted metal. Every step was calculated. Every muscle ready to spring.
