It was evening by the time Chris returned back to the small colonial house he lived in with Eva and her parents included. This place was where he lived but was not so homey because the atmosphere was always engulfed with tension. Since neither of Eva’s parents have liked him very much.

As soon as Chris walked into the living room he was greeted with the loud raging voice of Kate, his mother-in-law

“You idiots. How dare you have the guts to come to this place, huh? Do you realize the unfavorable predicament you pushed this family into just because you had to offend the patriarch? "Leave now because you are not welcome in this house."

Kate and Bruce were unable to attend the family new year gathering because Ben had a doctor's appointment to treat Ben’s paralyzed leg.

However, the relatives who were present at the party had already given them a call and told them about the ruckus that Chris had caused at the party. They both confirmed the validity of this news when Eva returned back home.

“I really wish that you could just drop dead! It would be much better if you just died. My precious daughter would no longer be dragged down to the trenches along with you if you were dead. Eva would be able to marry someone else that's more deserving of her.” Kate lashed out furiously at Chris.

“Here's the divorce agreement. Scram after signing it. You must have already figured out by now that our family will never acknowledge you, and Eva will never fall for you! If you have a conscience and don’t want to drag Eva, you’d better leave after signing this.” Kate slammed a divorce agreement onto the table, urging him to sign it.

“How many times will we go over this issue again, Kate? The old matriarch set up Chris and Eva's marriage and even my father who is the current helmsman of the family couldn't prevent it so it's impossible to get both of them a divorce……unless you want us to get chased out of the Carter family for being unfilial?” Bruce remarked, glancing at the divorce agreement and sighed helplessly while shaking his head.

“Oh please!" Kate groaned. “ The Old Mistress is already dead and has no say in what happens in this world…..Why can’t they get a divorce?”

“Bruce, have you ever considered your daughter’s happiness? Her status in the company is falling because of her good-for-nothing husband. Now, she’s been demoted to being a salesperson in the family company despite her hard work.

“That's enough already, mom,” Eva's voice echoed in the living room as she climbed down the stairs. “Dad is right. Besides, grandfather wouldn't allow the divorce because he cared much more about the family's reputation," she added.

“Eva, I think you’d better divorce that piece of trash. What good is he? He even offended your grandpa today. We can just claim that he is a jinx who brought death to the old mistress, ” Kate urged.

The way she saw it, it was entirely Chris' fault that their family had ended up in such a state.

“Eva, you are the prettiest among all the girls in your generation in the Carter family. Another young master from an elite family will surely give us a dowry for your hand in marriage after you get a divorce. Have you ever thought about how that will improve your standing in the family?”

“Chris, you have to sign that divorce paper today.” Kate expressed her desire in a firm attitude. She was not going to give up this time.

Chris looked at Eva without saying a word; he was giving her the final say.

It was true that he had dragged her down in the past three years so he wouldn't blame her If she wanted to divorce him. He would agree to it.

Eva walked toward the table under the watchful gaze of everyone in the living room.

Kate's face lit up in excitement as she watched Eva pick up the divorce agreement but her facial expression soon became sour as soon as she heard the words that Eva uttered.

“Mom, I’m not getting a divorce from Chris.” Eva declared and she ripped the divorce agreement to shreds.

“Don’t talk about how Grandpa won’t allow us to get a divorce. Even if Grandpa agrees to it, I won’t.”

“Mom, for the past three years, Christ has worked hard for our family without a single complaint. What has he ever refused to do? He might not be capable but at least he has always been very honest with me and that is a value worth considering."

Eva placed the shreds of paper on the table and turned to leave.

Kate's face turned completely dark. She jabbed her finger in Chris's face, shouting, “Look at what you’ve done! It’s all your fault! You’ve ruined my precious daughter’s life; you’ve ruined our entire family’s life! Are you happy now that you can continue living off my daughter’s money?"

“Scram! You’d better not come into the house tonight. Sleep outside! I don't care what you do so just scram!"

Chris was no longer paying attention to Kate's words. Instead, he left indifferently, chasing after Eva who had run back to her room. “I caused trouble for you again.”

He then realized that there were tears at the corners of Eva's eyes. He tried to wipe them away, but she quickly slapped his hand away before he could touch her face.

“What do you think you are trying to do now?” Eva said, rolling her eyes at Chris. “Don’t be mistaken. Just because I’m not divorcing you, doesn't mean that I’m in love with you. I just don’t want to go against my great grandmother’s wishes."

“Who do you think you're to touch me? I’d rather die than let you touch me. Didn’t you hear what Mom said? You’d better scream from the yard and sleep on the streets tonight.” She yelled at Chris, venting all her pent up frustration.

Chris smiled bitterly. He wasn't offended by that slap because he understood how much Eva was hurting inside as well.

He turned and walked towards the door but suddenly stopped in his tracks. He turned around and fixed his gaze on Eva. “If I can change myself, will you fall for me?”

Eva chuckled. “Chris, such words are useless. Haven’t I given you the chance to do so in the past three years?”

Chris shrugged helplessly then he strode out of the room.

As he walked along the streets until he got to the park where he sat on one of the empty park benches,

Soon, a familiar white customized Rolls Royce car parked a few meters away from where he sat and Elias alighted from the vehicle, rushing to meet Chris where he sat. This was the third encounter they both had under the same circumstances.

‘Young master Chris, I have spoken to patriarch White about your preposition. He understands your circumstances and he wishes to compensate you if you don't want to come back to the white mansion."

"The master wants me to give you this credit card for twenty billion dollars. It is a specially customized card meant for chosen members of the White family and the pin is your birth year. The transaction made on this credit card will only be traced back to the White family account and would have no link to you.”

Elias said, stretching a black card that also had a “W” logo imprinted on it and also some files for Chris.

“Also, ownership of the largest company in Brooklyn has been transferred to your name since the shares of the company have been purchased by the white family. However, in order to hide your identity as you requested we made it look like it was bought by the Brown family." Elias added.

The Brown family was an elite and influential family based in Seattle. However, the Browns were a vassal family of the White Family Household and they mostly served the members of the white family as assistants or Butlers just like Elias was working directly under the Patriarch of the White family.

Chris collected the card and document from Elias. He studied them for a few minutes and was slightly impressed. It wasn't that he was enticed by these gifts but the image of Eva appeared in his mind. She had been dragged down and bullied by the Carter family because of him.

Since he has already promised to change for her, he won’t allow himself to be humiliated yet again.’

“You have done well. I can handle the rest from here so tell my father I will return when I'm done.” He said and took his leave.

The fight erupted. Mason attacked with reckless fury, slashing and lunging with the blade, each movement a desperate attempt to escape, to hurt, to reclaim what he believed was stolen. Chris sidestepped fluidly, moving like water over stone, countering with a spinning kick that sent Mason staggering back, momentarily unbalanced. The two men collided in a deadly dance of fists, elbows, and knees, every blow a symphony of violence honed by years of brutal training. Each strike carried more than physical force; it was rage, obsession, betrayal, and love entwined, the culmination of a history of ambition, rivalry, and heartbreak. “You destroyed me!” Mason roared mid-strike, slashing at Chris with the dagger, each swing more frantic than the last. “You took everything I deserved!” Chris dodged the attack, letting the blade slice past his shoulder by inches, his muscles coiling like steel cables. He drove a knee into Mason’s ribs with surgical precision. “And you destroyed yourself!”

Chris’s jaw clenched until his teeth ached. His shoulder throbbed violently, each heartbeat sending a hot spike of pain down his arm. Flesh, bone, and muscle screamed for him to stop. But no agony could override the fire burning inside his chest. Mason wasn’t escaping. Not while Chris still drew breath. He moved upward, one step at a time, methodically scanning the environment the way only a seasoned operative could. His gaze tracked every scrap of debris scattered along the stairwell. Twisted railings. Loose bolts. Shattered grates. Even shattered glass that crunching under his boots. All potential traps. All weapons that Mason could exploit. The air tasted metallic—like the inside of a dying machine. Halfway up, a hulking silhouette lunged out from behind a flight of stairs. A mercenary. The last one Mason had left behind to stall him. The brute swung a metal pipe with enough force to dent the wall. The air screamed as the weapon cut through it. Chris reacted on instinct—droppin

The warehouse had fallen into a chaotic, almost oppressive silence, punctuated only by the distant groans of wounded mercenaries and the soft, ominous hiss of dust settling over shattered crates and broken machinery. Smoke clung to the air like a living thing, curling in thin, gray tendrils around overturned metal shelves and debris-strewn floors. The stench of gunpowder and scorched concrete hung thickly, filling Chris’s lungs with every ragged inhale. His chest heaved violently as he leaned against a fractured steel beam, the cold, jagged metal biting into his bruised shoulder. Pain radiated sharply through his ribs with every breath, a scorching reminder of the savage blows he had endured. Blood seeped through his torn shirt, the dark stain spreading with a life of its own, yet he barely noticed. Amidst the agony, amidst the storm of physical torment, one thought anchored him: Eva. She was pressed against the concrete floor a few meters away, trembling as though the very air its

You should enjoy the show too.” Again, the rod began its deadly arc downward. Mason’s shadow loomed larger. His manic grin widened even further. The rod arced down, a metallic predator intent on ending Chris in an instant. Pain had already lanced through his shoulder and back, but he remained rigid, Eva’s eyes locked on his. She gasped, terrified, trembling, yet her gaze carried trust—a fragile lifeline in the maelstrom of chaos. And then— Then—a sharp, deafening crack split the air. The pipe flew out of mason’s hands and in the next split second one of Mason’s lackeys guarding Eva crumpled to the floor, a dark spray blossoming across the concrete. “Sniper,” one of the soldiers yelled. Chris’s head snapped toward the direction the bullet came from and allowed himself a brief moment of gratitude, a spark of hope flaring in the storm of adre

Mason glared at Chris in anger. “ What are you doing? Did you forget what situation you are in right now? Chris’s pulse hammered. “Chris…” Mason whispered, tone dropping into cold, predatory calm. “Killing you would be easy. Too easy. But breaking you?” His smile stretched, sick and eager. “That’s more interesting so just stay put and get beaten up ” And without warning— Mason struck again The rod came down with lethal force, the air splitting with its speed and this time Chris stood still without making an attempt to evade. The metallic rod collided with Chris’s shoulder with a sickening, bone-shattering crunch that echoed through the hollow construction tower. The skeletal frame of the construction tower jutted into the night like the exposed ribs of some fallen titan. Rusted beams crisscrossed overhead, serrated edges catching the moonlight like jagged teeth ready to swallow anyone who dared step inside. Shattered windows gaped open across the tower’s facade, black and hollow like the eye sockets of a long-dead corpse. Even before Chris entered, the building breathed dread. The faint, rhythmic drip of water echoed through the hollow interior—slow, deliberate, almost like the tower itself was counting down. The air was thick with rust, mildew, damp concrete, and the metallic stench of old machinery. It felt like walking into the rotting heart of a nightmare. Chris moved cautiously through the debris-strewn floor, boots crunching over broken glass and twisted metal. Every step was calculated. Every muscle ready to spring. His training sharpened his senses, widening them like the aperture of a camera. He scanned the shadows for pressure pla
