It was evening by the time Chris returned back to the small colonial house he lived in with Eva and her parents included. This place was where he lived but was not so homey because the atmosphere was always engulfed with tension. Since neither of Eva’s parents have liked him very much.
As soon as Chris walked into the living room he was greeted with the loud raging voice of Kate, his mother-in-law“You idiots. How dare you have the guts to come to this place, huh? Do you realize the unfavorable predicament you pushed this family into just because you had to offend the patriarch? "Leave now because you are not welcome in this house."Kate and Bruce were unable to attend the family new year gathering because Ben had a doctor's appointment to treat Ben’s paralyzed leg. However, the relatives who were present at the party had already given them a call and told them about the ruckus that Chris had caused at the party. They both confirmed the validity of this news when Eva returned back home.“I really wish that you could just drop dead! It would be much better if you just died. My precious daughter would no longer be dragged down to the trenches along with you if you were dead. Eva would be able to marry someone else that's more deserving of her.” Kate lashed out furiously at Chris.“Here's the divorce agreement. Scram after signing it. You must have already figured out by now that our family will never acknowledge you, and Eva will never fall for you! If you have a conscience and don’t want to drag Eva, you’d better leave after signing this.” Kate slammed a divorce agreement onto the table, urging him to sign it.“How many times will we go over this issue again, Kate? The old matriarch set up Chris and Eva's marriage and even my father who is the current helmsman of the family couldn't prevent it so it's impossible to get both of them a divorce……unless you want us to get chased out of the Carter family for being unfilial?” Bruce remarked, glancing at the divorce agreement and sighed helplessly while shaking his head.“Oh please!" Kate groaned. “ The Old Mistress is already dead and has no say in what happens in this world…..Why can’t they get a divorce?”“Bruce, have you ever considered your daughter’s happiness? Her status in the company is falling because of her good-for-nothing husband. Now, she’s been demoted to being a salesperson in the family company despite her hard work.“That's enough already, mom,” Eva's voice echoed in the living room as she climbed down the stairs. “Dad is right. Besides, grandfather wouldn't allow the divorce because he cared much more about the family's reputation," she added.“Eva, I think you’d better divorce that piece of trash. What good is he? He even offended your grandpa today. We can just claim that he is a jinx who brought death to the old mistress, ” Kate urged. The way she saw it, it was entirely Chris' fault that their family had ended up in such a state.“Eva, you are the prettiest among all the girls in your generation in the Carter family. Another young master from an elite family will surely give us a dowry for your hand in marriage after you get a divorce. Have you ever thought about how that will improve your standing in the family?”“Chris, you have to sign that divorce paper today.” Kate expressed her desire in a firm attitude. She was not going to give up this time.Chris looked at Eva without saying a word; he was giving her the final say.It was true that he had dragged her down in the past three years so he wouldn't blame her If she wanted to divorce him. He would agree to it.Eva walked toward the table under the watchful gaze of everyone in the living room. Kate's face lit up in excitement as she watched Eva pick up the divorce agreement but her facial expression soon became sour as soon as she heard the words that Eva uttered. “Mom, I’m not getting a divorce from Chris.” Eva declared and she ripped the divorce agreement to shreds.“Don’t talk about how Grandpa won’t allow us to get a divorce. Even if Grandpa agrees to it, I won’t.”“Mom, for the past three years, Christ has worked hard for our family without a single complaint. What has he ever refused to do? He might not be capable but at least he has always been very honest with me and that is a value worth considering."Eva placed the shreds of paper on the table and turned to leave.Kate's face turned completely dark. She jabbed her finger in Chris's face, shouting, “Look at what you’ve done! It’s all your fault! You’ve ruined my precious daughter’s life; you’ve ruined our entire family’s life! Are you happy now that you can continue living off my daughter’s money?"“Scram! You’d better not come into the house tonight. Sleep outside! I don't care what you do so just scram!"Chris was no longer paying attention to Kate's words. Instead, he left indifferently, chasing after Eva who had run back to her room. “I caused trouble for you again.”He then realized that there were tears at the corners of Eva's eyes. He tried to wipe them away, but she quickly slapped his hand away before he could touch her face.“What do you think you are trying to do now?” Eva said, rolling her eyes at Chris. “Don’t be mistaken. Just because I’m not divorcing you, doesn't mean that I’m in love with you. I just don’t want to go against my great grandmother’s wishes."“Who do you think you're to touch me? I’d rather die than let you touch me. Didn’t you hear what Mom said? You’d better scream from the yard and sleep on the streets tonight.” She yelled at Chris, venting all her pent up frustration.Chris smiled bitterly. He wasn't offended by that slap because he understood how much Eva was hurting inside as well.He turned and walked towards the door but suddenly stopped in his tracks. He turned around and fixed his gaze on Eva. “If I can change myself, will you fall for me?”Eva chuckled. “Chris, such words are useless. Haven’t I given you the chance to do so in the past three years?”Chris shrugged helplessly then he strode out of the room.As he walked along the streets until he got to the park where he sat on one of the empty park benches,Soon, a familiar white customized Rolls Royce car parked a few meters away from where he sat and Elias alighted from the vehicle, rushing to meet Chris where he sat. This was the third encounter they both had under the same circumstances.‘Young master Chris, I have spoken to patriarch White about your preposition. He understands your circumstances and he wishes to compensate you if you don't want to come back to the white mansion.""The master wants me to give you this credit card for twenty billion dollars. It is a specially customized card meant for chosen members of the White family and the pin is your birth year. The transaction made on this credit card will only be traced back to the White family account and would have no link to you.”Elias said, stretching a black card that also had a “W” logo imprinted on it and also some files for Chris.“Also, ownership of the largest company in Brooklyn has been transferred to your name since the shares of the company have been purchased by the white family. However, in order to hide your identity as you requested we made it look like it was bought by the Brown family." Elias added. The Brown family was an elite and influential family based in Seattle. However, the Browns were a vassal family of the White Family Household and they mostly served the members of the white family as assistants or Butlers just like Elias was working directly under the Patriarch of the White family.Chris collected the card and document from Elias. He studied them for a few minutes and was slightly impressed. It wasn't that he was enticed by these gifts but the image of Eva appeared in his mind. She had been dragged down and bullied by the Carter family because of him.Since he has already promised to change for her, he won’t allow himself to be humiliated yet again.’“You have done well. I can handle the rest from here so tell my father I will return when I'm done.” He said and took his leave.Latest Chapter
Chapter 524
The evening settled gently over the White family mansion, bringing with it a rare sense of calm. The chaos of the past days had finally receded, leaving behind a quiet that felt earned rather than fragile. Warm lights glowed through tall windows, and the dining room—grand as ever—felt softer tonight, less like a place of strategy and power and more like a space meant for family. Dinner had been prepared carefully, with dishes chosen to be light and comforting rather than extravagant. Eva sat at the table beside Chris, her posture relaxed, though his hand remained subtly close to hers, as if either of them might reach out at any moment without thinking. Across from them sat Elliot and Amanda. Amanda had been unusually quiet since they arrived, her usual easy chatter replaced by a barely contained energy that made her shift in her seat more than once. Eva noticed, of course. She always did. Amanda barely touched her food, glancing between Eva and Chris, then at Elliot, who looked com

The garden was quiet in the way only the White family grounds could be—manicured perfection softened by night air, lantern lights glowing low among hedges and rosebushes. Gravel crunched faintly beneath their steps as Elliot and Amanda walked side by side, the distant mansion behind them slowly fading into silence. Amanda had her arms folded loosely, her expression still bright with lingering emotion. She hadn’t quite come down from the joy of the moment—the surprise, the warmth, the sense that something good had finally taken root after so much chaos. Elliot glanced at her, studying her profile. “You seemed genuinely happy,” he said at last. “About Eva’s pregnancy.” Amanda smiled without hesitation. “Of course I was.” She slowed her steps, turning her head slightly to look at him. “Eva isn’t just my friend. She’s been my best friend since we were kids. I know every ugly chapter it took for her to get here. The losses, the fear, the times she almost gave up.” Her voice softened.

The door closed behind him, and for a brief moment, laughter lingered in the air—soft, disbelieving, almost fragile. Then the room settled again. Chris shifted slightly against the pillows, his expression sobering as he turned his attention to Ethan. “What about Mason?” The name carried no heat now. No fury. Just a need for finality. Ethan straightened. “Cara transported him to the Crimson Legion headquarters shortly after you arrived here. He’s been placed in their highest-security prison—isolated, monitored, and restrained.” “No loopholes?” Chris asked quietly. “None,” Ethan said firmly. “He’ll never be a problem again. Not to you. Not to Eva. Not to the White family.” Chris exhaled, a slow breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. Something inside him loosened—not triumph, not satisfaction, but relief. “Good,” he said. He glanced around the room then—at Amanda hovering near Eva, at Elliot standing near the window, at Ethan waiting silently. “Please,” Chris sai
Chapter 521
Chris slowly lifted his uninjured hand and cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing away a tear before it could fall. “Listen to me,” he said firmly, though his voice remained gentle. “Your kidnapping wasn’t your fault. It was mine.” Her lips parted in protest, but he continued. “I was reckless. I underestimated my enemies. I let my guard down—and you paid the price for it.” His jaw tightened. “That won’t happen again. I promise you. No harm, no danger will disrupt our lives like this anymore.” She searched his eyes, as if trying to see whether those words were merely comfort—or a vow carved in stone. “I believe you,” she said softly. At that moment, the door swung open again. “Well, well,” a familiar, amused voice drawled. “Looks like the hero finally rose from the dead.” Amanda strolled in with an exaggerated sigh, hands on her hips. “I was starting to think I’d need to attend your funeral just to confirm you weren’t actually immortal.” Chris huffed weakly. “Nice to see
Chapter 520
A day later, Chris woke to silence. Not the eerie, suffocating silence of unconsciousness—but the gentle, familiar quiet of home. Soft sheets cradled his body. The faint scent of polished wood and clean linen lingered in the air. Sunlight filtered through half-drawn curtains, painting warm streaks of gold across the ceiling. For a few seconds, he simply stared upward, blinking slowly. …My room? The realization came with confusion rather than relief. His body felt heavy, as if gravity had doubled overnight. A dull ache pulsed through his ribs, his arm throbbed beneath layers of bandages, and every breath reminded him that he’d been pushed well past his limits. Still, compared to the last thing he remembered—blood, pain, Mason’s twisted grin—it was… peaceful. Too peaceful. His brows furrowed as fragmented memories surfaced. Eva’s scream. Mason’s grip. The burning fury that had drowned out everything else. Then darkness. How long was I out? As if summoned by the thou
Chapter 519
The door opened, and Charles strode in. For a man who usually carried himself with composed authority, his unease was unmistakable. His eyes swept the room immediately, landing on Chris’s battered form before snapping to Eva. “Eva,” he said sharply, crossing the room in long strides. “Are you hurt?” She shook her head quickly. “I’m okay,” she said, then corrected herself. “Mostly. Chris—he—” “I know,” Charles said, his voice softening as he placed his hands on her shoulders, inspecting her carefully. Relief flickered across his face when he found no serious injuries. “Thank God.” Her throat tightened. “He saved me. He got there just in time.” Charles closed his eyes briefly, exhaling. When he looked back at Chris, something dark and dangerous passed through his gaze. Gratitude, yes—but also fury at the cost. The doctor cleared his throat. “Mr. White, I’m going to need the room cleared. Master Chris requires complete rest.” Eva stiffened immediately. “I’ll stay.” Charles hesit
