It was evening by the time Chris returned back to the small colonial house he lived in with Eva and her parents included. This place was where he lived but was not so homey because the atmosphere was always engulfed with tension. Since neither of Eva’s parents have liked him very much.

As soon as Chris walked into the living room he was greeted with the loud raging voice of Kate, his mother-in-law

“You idiots. How dare you have the guts to come to this place, huh? Do you realize the unfavorable predicament you pushed this family into just because you had to offend the patriarch? "Leave now because you are not welcome in this house."

Kate and Bruce were unable to attend the family new year gathering because Ben had a doctor's appointment to treat Ben’s paralyzed leg.

However, the relatives who were present at the party had already given them a call and told them about the ruckus that Chris had caused at the party. They both confirmed the validity of this news when Eva returned back home.

“I really wish that you could just drop dead! It would be much better if you just died. My precious daughter would no longer be dragged down to the trenches along with you if you were dead. Eva would be able to marry someone else that's more deserving of her.” Kate lashed out furiously at Chris.

“Here's the divorce agreement. Scram after signing it. You must have already figured out by now that our family will never acknowledge you, and Eva will never fall for you! If you have a conscience and don’t want to drag Eva, you’d better leave after signing this.” Kate slammed a divorce agreement onto the table, urging him to sign it.

“How many times will we go over this issue again, Kate? The old matriarch set up Chris and Eva's marriage and even my father who is the current helmsman of the family couldn't prevent it so it's impossible to get both of them a divorce……unless you want us to get chased out of the Carter family for being unfilial?” Bruce remarked, glancing at the divorce agreement and sighed helplessly while shaking his head.

“Oh please!" Kate groaned. “ The Old Mistress is already dead and has no say in what happens in this world…..Why can’t they get a divorce?”

“Bruce, have you ever considered your daughter’s happiness? Her status in the company is falling because of her good-for-nothing husband. Now, she’s been demoted to being a salesperson in the family company despite her hard work.

“That's enough already, mom,” Eva's voice echoed in the living room as she climbed down the stairs. “Dad is right. Besides, grandfather wouldn't allow the divorce because he cared much more about the family's reputation," she added.

“Eva, I think you’d better divorce that piece of trash. What good is he? He even offended your grandpa today. We can just claim that he is a jinx who brought death to the old mistress, ” Kate urged.

The way she saw it, it was entirely Chris' fault that their family had ended up in such a state.

“Eva, you are the prettiest among all the girls in your generation in the Carter family. Another young master from an elite family will surely give us a dowry for your hand in marriage after you get a divorce. Have you ever thought about how that will improve your standing in the family?”

“Chris, you have to sign that divorce paper today.” Kate expressed her desire in a firm attitude. She was not going to give up this time.

Chris looked at Eva without saying a word; he was giving her the final say.

It was true that he had dragged her down in the past three years so he wouldn't blame her If she wanted to divorce him. He would agree to it.

Eva walked toward the table under the watchful gaze of everyone in the living room.

Kate's face lit up in excitement as she watched Eva pick up the divorce agreement but her facial expression soon became sour as soon as she heard the words that Eva uttered.

“Mom, I’m not getting a divorce from Chris.” Eva declared and she ripped the divorce agreement to shreds.

“Don’t talk about how Grandpa won’t allow us to get a divorce. Even if Grandpa agrees to it, I won’t.”

“Mom, for the past three years, Christ has worked hard for our family without a single complaint. What has he ever refused to do? He might not be capable but at least he has always been very honest with me and that is a value worth considering."

Eva placed the shreds of paper on the table and turned to leave.

Kate's face turned completely dark. She jabbed her finger in Chris's face, shouting, “Look at what you’ve done! It’s all your fault! You’ve ruined my precious daughter’s life; you’ve ruined our entire family’s life! Are you happy now that you can continue living off my daughter’s money?"

“Scram! You’d better not come into the house tonight. Sleep outside! I don't care what you do so just scram!"

Chris was no longer paying attention to Kate's words. Instead, he left indifferently, chasing after Eva who had run back to her room. “I caused trouble for you again.”

He then realized that there were tears at the corners of Eva's eyes. He tried to wipe them away, but she quickly slapped his hand away before he could touch her face.

“What do you think you are trying to do now?” Eva said, rolling her eyes at Chris. “Don’t be mistaken. Just because I’m not divorcing you, doesn't mean that I’m in love with you. I just don’t want to go against my great grandmother’s wishes."

“Who do you think you're to touch me? I’d rather die than let you touch me. Didn’t you hear what Mom said? You’d better scream from the yard and sleep on the streets tonight.” She yelled at Chris, venting all her pent up frustration.

Chris smiled bitterly. He wasn't offended by that slap because he understood how much Eva was hurting inside as well.

He turned and walked towards the door but suddenly stopped in his tracks. He turned around and fixed his gaze on Eva. “If I can change myself, will you fall for me?”

Eva chuckled. “Chris, such words are useless. Haven’t I given you the chance to do so in the past three years?”

Chris shrugged helplessly then he strode out of the room.

As he walked along the streets until he got to the park where he sat on one of the empty park benches,

Soon, a familiar white customized Rolls Royce car parked a few meters away from where he sat and Elias alighted from the vehicle, rushing to meet Chris where he sat. This was the third encounter they both had under the same circumstances.

‘Young master Chris, I have spoken to patriarch White about your preposition. He understands your circumstances and he wishes to compensate you if you don't want to come back to the white mansion."

"The master wants me to give you this credit card for twenty billion dollars. It is a specially customized card meant for chosen members of the White family and the pin is your birth year. The transaction made on this credit card will only be traced back to the White family account and would have no link to you.”

Elias said, stretching a black card that also had a “W” logo imprinted on it and also some files for Chris.

“Also, ownership of the largest company in Brooklyn has been transferred to your name since the shares of the company have been purchased by the white family. However, in order to hide your identity as you requested we made it look like it was bought by the Brown family." Elias added.

The Brown family was an elite and influential family based in Seattle. However, the Browns were a vassal family of the White Family Household and they mostly served the members of the white family as assistants or Butlers just like Elias was working directly under the Patriarch of the White family.

Chris collected the card and document from Elias. He studied them for a few minutes and was slightly impressed. It wasn't that he was enticed by these gifts but the image of Eva appeared in his mind. She had been dragged down and bullied by the Carter family because of him.

Since he has already promised to change for her, he won’t allow himself to be humiliated yet again.’

“You have done well. I can handle the rest from here so tell my father I will return when I'm done.” He said and took his leave.

Ethan turned to him. "Sir, I just saw the madam's car." Chris’s gaze snapped toward him. "Where?" "She just drove past the hotel. She saw you with Emma." Chris’s brows furrowed. "Follow her." About an hour ago, Chris leaned back in his leather chair, his fingers drumming lightly against the polished desk of Pegasus Enterprise. The floor-to-ceiling windows of his office reflected the golden hues of the late afternoon sun, casting long shadows across the luxurious space. He had just finished reviewing a high-profile acquisition deal, but his mind was elsewhere. Eva. He knew he had failed to pick her up the previous evening. It was a minor misstep, but one he didn’t want to repeat. Their relationship was a delicate balance—one he wasn’t willing to tip over. He glanced at his watch. There was still time before Eva was scheduled to leave the Carter estate, but there was another obligation he had to tend to first. Standing, Chris grabbed his suit jacket and slipped it on with effortless precision. "Ethan," he called as he stepped out of his office. Ethan, who had been waiting outside, straightened immediately. "Sir?" "Prepare the car. I’m stopping by the hotel before he

A few murmurs of agreement rippled through the room. Eva’s gaze sharpened, already sensing Eric’s intention to undermine her. She exhaled slowly, keeping her voice calm yet firm. "I find it amusing that you’re concerned about punctuality when this very meeting was only possible because of the business deals I secured for this family. Or would you prefer to discuss the countless contracts I’ve personally overseen that have elevated the Carter name?" Eric’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered. "Of course, we acknowledge your contributions. But it isn’t enough. You still have many other responsibilities to the family and as head you need to set an example." Eva folded her arms. "Oh? Do enlighten me." Eric leaned forward, his gaze gleaming with false sincerity. " You know this would have been much easier if you didn't have to drive all the way here. Why don’t you relocate the Carter family to your current mansion? It’s extravagant and more than spacious

Back in her room, Eva leaned against the door, her hands balled into fists. She groaned in embarrassment, not sure about what she just did. Her mind was a storm of emotions—confusion, frustration, pain. The sight of that lipstick stain haunted her. Her stomach twisted at the mere thought of Chris with another woman. She had spent the entire day yearning for his presence, regretting how she had treated him… only to now be met with something that shattered her fragile resolve. Was she really being foolish? Had she been longing for someone who had already moved on? She shut her eyes, inhaling sharply. This feeling—this uneasiness gnawing at her—was unbearable. But there was nothing she could do about it. Not right now. As the night deepened, Eva lay awake, staring at the ceiling, her heart aching with emotions she didn’t know how to handle. And Chris, on the other side of the mansion, was just as restless—completely unaware of the storm brewing in Eva’s heart. T

“Where have you been all day, Chris?” Kate’s voice rang through the house. “Do you even know what time it is? You think that you can. Just come and go as you please” Chris’s voice was calm, composed. “I had things to take care of, Mother.” “Oh, so you disappear for days, come back whenever you please, and don’t even think to explain?” “I’m sorry, Mother. I didn’t mean to worry you.” Kate scoffed. “Do you even care about this family? About Eva?” Eva clenched her fists. Why did Mom always have to bring me into everything? Chris remained patient. “I do care, Mother. But I had no choice. I had something important to handle.” Kate exhaled sharply. “You better not bring trouble to this house, Christopher.” Chris didn’t respond. He quietly climbed the stairs. Then came the sound of footsteps. Eva barely had time to react before she noticed Chris making his way up the stairs. Her heart pounded. Would he come to her room? Would he apologize? Eva Carter stepped through the revolving doors, her heart pounding with quiet anticipation. Her gaze instinctively swept across the bustling street, searching for the familiar sleek black car that Chris always parked near the curb. But he wasn’t there. She frowned, gripping the strap of her handbag tightly. Maybe he’s running late. It wouldn’t be the first time Chris had kept her waiting due to work, but he always showed up. Always. Minutes ticked by. First five. Then ten. The occasional rush of a car passing by barely distracted her from the growing tightness in her chest. She took a deep breath, pushing away the creeping unease that threatened to settle. He’ll come. He has to.
