Chapter 3: The Imperial Black Card
last update2026-10-15 16:27:26

The Imperial Hotel sat like a sprawling golden palace at the center of River City’s elite financial district. Its massive crystal facade towered forty stories high, casting a warm, brilliant glow over the rain-slicked streets below.

Inside the Grand Ballroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly grand. Heavy gold leaf decorated the high arched ceilings, while massive crystal chandeliers spilled soft light over hundreds of tailored tuxedos and evening gowns. Tonight was the annual Grand Maritime Charity Ball—a gathering where River City’s top business tycoons, corrupt politicians, and media moguls met to divide the city’s commercial territories over vintage wine.

Up on the elevated auction stage stood Julian Vance.

He had changed into a fresh, custom dark-blue tuxedo, though his face remained unusually pale. The humiliating scene at Vance Tower had shaken him, but standing here among his peers, surrounded by sixty heavily armed private security guards stationed along the walls, his arrogance had returned.

Beside him stood Evelyn Sterling. She had touched up her makeup and changed into a glittering emerald dress, though her eyes flickered nervously toward the ballroom’s main entrance every time the doors swung open.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" the auctioneer announced through the crystal sound system, his voice booming over the quiet hum of the crowd. "We now arrive at Item Number Four—the prime crown jewel of tonight’s liquidations! The central deep-water logistics terminal, formerly owned by Montgomery Logistics!"

A large holographic screen behind the stage lit up, displaying a high-resolution map of River City’s massive commercial harbor.

"Due to pressing financial restructuring," the auctioneer continued, smiling politely, "this state-of-the-art port facility is being auctioned to cover outstanding credit liabilities. The opening bid starts at a discounted five million dollars!"

Julian immediately raised his gold-trimmed bidding paddle. "Ten million."

The crowd chuckled softly. Everyone in the room knew the game. Julian had systematically squeezed Montgomery Logistics for six months, cutting off their supply routes and forcing the bank to call in their loans. The port terminal was worth at least eighty million dollars, but no one in River City was foolish enough to outbid Julian Vance. To cross Julian was to commit corporate suicide.

"Ten million dollars from Mr. Julian Vance!" the auctioneer called out, lifting his brass hammer. "Ten million going once... going twice..."

Julian turned toward the front row, shooting a smug, victorious look at Chairman Montgomery—Claire’s elderly father—who sat in a wheelchair, his face pale and eyes filled with bitter defeat.

"Sold for—"

"One hundred million."

A voice echoed from the rear of the grand ballroom.

It wasn't loud. It wasn't shouted. But it possessed a strange, heavy resonance that cut through the music and hum of the crowd, freezing every person in their tracks.

The auctioneer’s brass hammer stopped an inch above the wooden block.

A hundred heads snapped around simultaneously toward the massive double doors at the back of the hall.

The heavy oak doors had been pushed open. Standing under the bright archway was Ethan Vance.

He hadn't changed his clothes. He still wore his mud-stained combat boots, faded dark jeans, and heavy canvas jacket, damp from the storm outside. Standing beside him was Claire Montgomery, her dark hair immaculate, her face holding a sharp, icy composure that masked her racing heart.

Gasps rippled through the hall like a wave.

"Is that... Ethan Vance?"

"The convict brother? How did he get in here?"

"Did he just say one hundred million dollars? Is he insane?"

Julian’s face twisted into a mask of pure rage. He smashed his bidding paddle against the wooden podium with a deafening CRACK.

"Ethan!" Julian roared into the stage microphone, his voice echoing violently off the high ceilings. "How dare you drag your filthy feet into this hall! You are a convicted felon! Security, drag this beggar out and throw him in a dungeon!"

Eight tall security guards in black tactical gear immediately detached from the perimeter, drawing heavy electric stun batons as they marched toward the back row.

Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. She instinctively took a half-step behind Ethan, her hand tightening around the strap of her leather clutch. "Ethan... the guards..."

Ethan didn't move an inch. He kept his hands casually resting in his coat pockets, his dark, golden-flecked eyes locked onto Julian with terrifying indifference.

"Julian," Ethan spoke smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. "This is a public auction. Are you saying Vance Enterprises is too poor to accept a higher bid?"

"A bid?" Evelyn stepped up to the microphone, her voice shrill and dripping with venom. "You don't have a penny to your name, Ethan! You just walked out of a labor camp three hours ago! You are throwing fake numbers around to disrupt a legal proceeding! Auctioneer, ignore this loser and drop the hammer!"

"That's right!" Julian sneered, regaining his footing as he looked down at Ethan from the high stage. "One hundred million? You couldn't raise one hundred dollars if you sold your own organs! If you can produce one hundred million in liquid assets right now, I'll eat that auction block whole!"

The crowd broke into cruel, mocking laughter. Several young heirs from the Four Great Families sneered, pointing at Ethan’s muddy boots.

Ethan slowly pulled his right hand from his coat pocket.

Between his index and middle finger, he held a single, sleek card. It was made of a strange, matte-black metallic alloy that seemed to absorb the light around it. Engraved across its center in pure, raised gold was the sharp, intricate silhouette of a coiled dragon.

He held it up casually under the chandelier light.

"Call the regional president of River Bank," Ethan said quietly. "Ask him if this card is real."

Julian burst into hysterical laughter. "A black plastic card? You printed a toy card in prison and brought it here to play pretend? Guards, break his legs!"

The eight security guards closed in, raising their crackling stun batons.

"STOP! ALL OF YOU, FREEZE!"

A terrified, high-pitched scream shattered the air from the VIP seating area in the front row.

An elderly man in a dark grey suit stumbled out of his leather chair, nearly knocking over a small table of champagne flutes. It was Chairman Vance Senior—Ethan and Julian’s grandfather, the founder of the family empire.

The old man was trembling violently, his eyes bulging as he stared at the matte-black card in Ethan’s fingers.

"Grandfather?" Julian frowned, lowering his microphone. "What's wrong with you? It's just a fake—"

"Shut your mouth, you ignorant fool!" Chairman Vance screamed, his voice cracking with absolute terror. He pointed a shaking, frail finger toward Ethan. "That... that is the Sovereign Black Dragon Card! Issued by the International Monetary Council... there are only three in existence across the entire planet!"

The entire ballroom went deathly silent.

"Three in existence?" a tech billionaire whispered from the second row, his face turning pale. "The card that grants unlimited, unbacked global credit..."

Before Julian could process his grandfather's words, the heavy front glass doors of the Imperial Hotel were thrown wide open.

A middle-aged man in an expensive dark suit burst into the hall, gasping for air, sweating profusely through his silk collar. He was accompanied by six personal bodyguards who aggressively cleared a path through the crowd.

It was Victor Sterling—President of the River City Commercial Bank and Evelyn’s uncle.

"Uncle Victor!" Evelyn called out from the stage, relief flushing her face. "You arrived just in time! Ethan brought a fake bank card to mock the auction! Order the guards to arrest him!"

Victor Sterling didn't even look at his niece.

He sprinted down the long red carpet aisle, his leather shoes slapping against the floor. He ignored the stares of the city's highest billionaires, paying no mind to Julian or the auctioneer.

He stopped three feet in front of Ethan.

In front of three hundred prominent guests, corporate executives, and live media cameras, Victor Sterling—the most powerful banking figure in River City—bent his waist ninety degrees and bowed deeply to the young man in the muddy canvas jacket.

"Lord Vance!" Victor cried out, his voice trembling so hard it echoed through the silent room. "The central reserve has received your authorization! One hundred million dollars has been instantly cleared and transferred directly to the maritime auction account!"

BOOM.

It felt as though a bomb had detonated inside the hall.

Julian’s jaw dropped so low it looked unhinged. He stumbled backward into the auction podium, nearly knocking over the microphone stand.

Evelyn staggered back, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes wide with unbelievable shock. "Uncle... what are you doing? Are you insane? He's a penniless ex-convict!"

Victor snapped his head around, his face flushed with rage and sheer terror. He stepped up to the stage in two quick strides, grabbed Evelyn by her wrist, and delivered a blinding slap across her face.

PAFF!

The sharp crack echoed through the speakers. Evelyn screamed as she was thrown to her knees on the polished stage floor, clutching her red, burning cheek in complete disbelief.

"Shut your foolish mouth!" Victor screamed at her, wiping sweat from his forehead with a shaking hand. "If you say one more word to offend Lord Vance, I will personally strip your father of his titles and throw your entire family line into the streets before midnight!"

Victor turned back to Ethan, bowing his head even lower, his chest heaving. "Lord Vance... please forgive her ignorance! The Sterling family had no knowledge of your return!"

Ethan didn't look at Victor. He didn't look at Evelyn weeping on the stage.

He walked slowly past the frozen security guards, his muddy boots stepping onto the raised wooden stage. He walked up to the auction podium, reached out, and picked up the solid brass hammer from the auctioneer’s trembling hands.

Ethan looked down at Julian, who was shaking so violently he had to hold onto the railing to stay upright.

"One hundred million dollars," Ethan murmured, his voice cold and flat. "Is there a higher bid, Julian?"

Julian opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His throat was completely dry. His mind was an absolute void, paralyzed by the sight of the man he had spent three years trying to destroy.

Ethan raised the brass hammer.

BANG.

"Sold," Ethan stated, "to Montgomery Logistics."

He tossed the brass hammer onto Julian’s chest. It hit Julian’s dark-blue tuxedo with a dull thud before clattering to the floor.

Ethan turned to face the entire room of River City elites.

"Tonight, Montgomery Logistics reclaims the central harbor," Ethan announced, his voice vibrating through every corner of the vast hall. "And tomorrow morning at eight o'clock, the Vance Family Council will assemble at the ancestral manor. Every elder, every executive, and every traitor will be present."

His dark, golden-flecked eyes swept over the terrified crowd, landing one last time on Julian.

"If anyone is absent," Ethan added softly, "I will consider it a declaration of war."

Without waiting for a response, Ethan turned on his heel and walked down the stage, extending his arm to Claire.

Claire, still in a state of utter shock, took his arm. Together, they walked down the central aisle toward the exit, leaving the entire high society of River City drowning in terror and silence.
