Chapter 6: The Capital’s Shadow
last update2026-10-15 16:30:11

The rain that had plagued River City for three days finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, biting autumn wind.

Inside the top-floor office of Vance Tower, the floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a sweeping, panoramic view of the entire financial district. The city below moved at its usual frantic pace, entirely oblivious to the silent, seismic shift of power that had occurred over the last forty-eight hours.

Ethan stood before the massive window, his jacket removed, his dark shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms. A subtle, jagged scar ran along his left inner wrist—a souvenir from his second year in the Northern Wastelands. In his right hand, he held a crystal glass of dark amber whiskey, though he hadn't taken a single sip.

Behind him, the heavy oak doors of the office swung open softly.

Claire walked in carrying a slender leather dossier. She wore a dark blue tailored dress, her hair pulled into an immaculate bun. Though she looked regal and composed, her eyes held a new depth of quiet caution. She had spent the last two days overseeing the seamless integration of Montgomery Logistics with Vance Enterprises, watching as billion-dollar contracts were signed with a single stamp from Ethan’s office.

She stopped two steps behind him, smelling the clean scent of rain and cedar that seemed to follow him everywhere.

"The board has officially ratified the restructuring," Claire said, her voice smooth and professional. "Julian’s remaining loyalists have been purged from every subsidiary. Stock prices rebounded thirty-four percent at the opening bell this morning. The market is calling it the greatest corporate resurrection in the city's history."

Ethan didn't turn around. "And the media?"

"Silent," Claire replied, a faint, wry smile touching her lips. "Victor Sterling bought out the three primary news outlets last night. The public narrative is that Julian resigned due to health reasons, and you returned from an extended international venture to take over."

She paused, stepping closer to place the leather dossier on the mahogany desk beside him. Her expression sobered. "Julian and Evelyn were transferred to the Capital State Penitentiary at four o'clock this morning. But before he was loaded into the transport van, Julian left a message with the federal marshals."

Ethan turned slowly, his dark eyes meeting hers. "What did he say?"

"He said..." Claire hesitated, her fingers tightening slightly against the dossier. "He said, 'Tell Ethan that the Starlight Group knows he's alive. The Capital doesn't allow ghosts to walk.'"

Ethan’s eyes didn't flicker. He raised his glass to his lips, taking a slow, measured sip of the whiskey.

"Starlight Group," Ethan murmured, the words falling like heavy stones into the quiet room. "The front organization for the Sterling Family’s master house in the Capital."

Claire stepped closer, her tone laced with genuine concern. "Ethan, Julian was arrogant and stupid, but he wasn't lying about the Capital. River City is just a provincial port compared to the main continent. The Four Great Clans in the Capital operate completely outside the law. They control the national energy grids, the private military sectors, and the central banking system. If they realize you have returned with this kind of capital—"

"They already know," Ethan interrupted quietly.

He set his glass down on the desk and opened the leather dossier Claire had brought in. Inside lay a single piece of heavy, black parchment folded in half. Engraved across its surface in silver foil was a stylized crest: a silver hawk clutching a broken sword.

The mark of the Sterling Clan’s main lineage.

"It arrived by courier thirty minutes ago," Claire said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Addressed directly to you."

Ethan opened the parchment. Written in elegant, sweeping calligraphy were four short lines:

> The bird that escapes the northern cage should learn to hide in the trees.

> Cross the border into the Capital, and the cage will become a coffin.

> The Grand Summit convenes in seven days. Stay in your puddle, fish.

>

Ethan read the words once, his face completely devoid of emotion. He casually tossed the black parchment into the brass ash tray on his desk, pulled a silver lighter from his pocket, and flicked the flame to life.

The paper caught instantly, burning with a low, blue flame until nothing remained but fine grey ash.

"They think River City is my sanctuary," Ethan said softly. "They think I am hiding here."

"Aren't you?" Claire asked, looking into his eyes. "You have reclaimed your father's company. You have cleared my family's name and debts. You have absolute power in this region, Ethan. Why go to the Capital? Why step into a tiger's den when you have already won?"

Ethan walked around the desk, stopping right in front of her. The atmosphere in the room tightened instantly, heavy with an unyielding pressure that made the air feel thin.

"Because my father didn't die of a heart attack, Claire," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly register that chilled the room. "Three years ago, before Evelyn poisoned my wine, my father discovered that the Sterling Clan and the Starlight Group were using Vance Enterprises' logistics routes to smuggle illegal military bio-tech out of the country."

Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. "Bio-tech?"

"When he refused to cooperate," Ethan continued, his golden-flecked eyes burning with dark intensity, "they didn't just ruin his business. They induced a cerebral hemorrhage using a synthetic toxin that leaves no trace in an autopsy. They murdered him in his own bed while I was sitting in a interrogation cell."

Claire pressed her hand against her mouth, a sharp gasp escaping her lips. "Your father... was murdered by the Capital Clans?"

"Julian was merely the dog they threw a bone to," Ethan said, turning back toward the window. "Evelyn was the leash. The men who ordered my father's death are sitting in seventy-story skyscrapers in the Capital, sipping hundred-year-old wine, believing they are gods who cannot be touched."

He looked out over the city, his hands folding behind his back.

"I didn't come back to River City just to take back a company, Claire," Ethan whispered. "I came back to build a staging ground."

BUZZ. BUZZ.

The satellite phone on his desk vibrated twice. Ethan picked it up and pressed it to his ear.

"Lord Vance," Nightfall’s harsh, mechanical voice came through the encrypted speaker. "The Shadow Fleet has completed the deployment along the southern transport corridor. Furthermore, our intelligence network in the Capital has confirmed an emergency gathering."

"Who called it?" Ethan asked.

"Lord Sterling himself. The patriarch of the Sterling Clan. After Victor Sterling’s humiliation at the auction and Julian’s arrest, the Sterling Clan’s stock in the Capital dropped twelve percent. They have dispatched their senior enforcer—the Grey Viper, Marcus Sterling—to River City."

Ethan’s lips curved into a cold, ruthless smile. "Marcus Sterling. The man who handled the execution team three years ago."

"Yes, Lord. Marcus has crossed the provincial border with forty elite combatants from the Capital’s private security corps. They are currently establishing a base at the Grand Horizon Estate on the outskirts of the city."

"Have they made contact with local authorities?"

"No, Lord," Nightfall reported. "Marcus treats River City like an occupied territory. He has issued an internal order: locate Miss Claire Montgomery and bring her to the Grand Horizon Estate by midnight. He intends to use her as leverage to force you to sign over the Black Dragon Card."

A dangerous, suffocating quiet settled over the office.

Claire, standing close enough to hear the faint leaks from the speaker, felt her blood run cold. She took a involuntary step back, her hand touching the edge of the mahogany desk for support.

Ethan didn't raise his voice. He didn't slam his fist. His expression remained completely still, but the golden specks in his dark eyes burned like dying stars.

"Nightfall," Ethan spoke softly into the receiver.

"Command me, Lord."

"Block every outgoing signal from the Grand Horizon Estate," Ethan ordered, his voice carrying the absolute finality of an execution decree. "Deploy the First Shadow Battalion. Surround the perimeter. No one enters. No one leaves."

"Understood, Lord. Should we engage upon arrival?"

"No," Ethan said, slowly looking toward Claire. "Hold the perimeter until I arrive. Marcus Sterling came all the way from the Capital to deliver a message. It would be rude of me not to answer it in person."

Ethan hung up the phone and slipped it into his trouser pocket. He picked up his suit jacket from the back of his chair and slid it over his broad shoulders.

Claire looked at him, her heart pounding violently against her ribs. "Ethan... Marcus Sterling is a legendary commander in the Capital’s underworld. He isn't like Julian. He has killed dozens of corporate rivals without ever standing trial!"

Ethan walked up to her, reaching out to gently touch her cheek. His skin was warm, his thumb brushing over her soft cheekbone with an unexpected tenderness that made her breath catch.

"Claire," Ethan murmured softly, looking deep into her dark, fearful eyes. "Do you know why the Dragon Order is feared across four continents?"

Claire shook her head slightly, unable to pull her gaze away from his.

"Because in the surface world, men like Marcus Sterling play by rules they bought with money," Ethan said, his tone flat, calm, and terrifyingly absolute. "In my world, there are no rules. There is only the Sovereign."

He stepped past her toward the heavy double doors of the office.

"Stay in the tower with the inner guards," Ethan added, his hand resting on the brass door handle. "I will be back in time for dinner."

Without waiting for a response, Ethan opened the door and walked out into the private elevator hall, leaving Claire standing alone in the massive office as the cold autumn wind howled against the glass windows.
