‎Chapter 4: Echo of the Apex

‎The upgrades from Sera Kain took the better part of two days. Dex spent most of it in the chop shop bay, shirtless on a raised platform while nanites crawled under his skin like living tattoos. The new armor fused seamlessly with his body. Lightweight plates that shifted like liquid metal when he moved. Purple-blue veins now ran openly along the seams, pulsing in time with his heartbeat. The Eclipse Core approved. Every test made the corruption meter flicker but never climb past 22%.

‎Lira watched from the side, arms crossed. She had spent the time tinkering with her own gear. Upgraded the stun pistol into something that could now fire charged rune bolts. "You're starting to look like one of them," she said quietly.

‎"Like what?" Dex flexed his arm. The plates rippled.

‎"Like the Convergence legends. Half man, half machine, half monster."

‎Dex met her gaze in the reflection of a nearby console. "As long as the monster is on our side, I'm good."

‎Sera stepped back, wiping her hands. "Done. Passive shield generator. Adaptive camouflage. Nanite repair rate tripled. You could take a plasma cannon to the chest and walk it off. Once."

‎"Appreciate it." Dex hopped down. The armor felt like a second skin. "And the Sovereign info?"

‎Sera pulled up the holo-file again. Ancient script scrolled across the display. Diagrams of Eclipse Cores linking like a constellation. "The fragments were scattered after the Convergence. Each one chooses a host. Most die. A few survive. But only one becomes the Sovereign. The one who collects enough fragments without losing themselves to the void."

‎Dex touched the spot where the Core sat in his chest. "And this Apex Echo?"

‎"She's the current frontrunner. Superior fragment. Already at apex tier. No one knows her real name. Just that she appears when a new Sovereign candidate gets too strong. She either absorbs them... or ends them."

‎Lira frowned. "Why not just kill everyone with a fragment?"

‎"Because the prophecy says the Sovereign has to be tested. Broken. Rebuilt. Only then can they balance the eclipse."

‎Dex felt a chill. The Core whispered in his mind. Soft. Almost excited. *She comes. Prepare.*

‎He pushed it down. "We keep moving. Next stop, the black archive on Vespera Station. Old Convergence records. If anyone has more on the fragments, it's there."

‎Sera nodded. "Watch your back. Helix is offering a bounty now. Ten million credits for your Core. Dead or alive."

‎Dex grinned. "Flattering."

‎They left Shadow Drift with full tanks and a new sense of urgency. The Nomad jumped toward Vespera. A neutral archive station run by scholars and information brokers. No weapons allowed inside. No violence. Supposed to be safe.

‎Dex did not believe in safe anymore.

‎The jump was quiet. Lira slept in the co-pilot seat. Dex stared at the stars. The corruption meter held steady at 19%. But the whispers grew louder. Images flashed in his mind. A woman in black armor. Eyes glowing purple. Moving faster than thought. Destroying everything in her path.

‎He shook it off.

‎Vespera Station appeared on scanners. A massive spherical structure. Rings of docking arms. Lights twinkling like stars.

‎They docked. Paid the f*e. Walked the pristine corridors. Scholars in robes. Data-pads glowing. No one looked twice at Dex's armor. The camouflage was active. He looked like any other scavenger.

‎The archive hall was huge. Walls lined with crystal data-stores. Holo-terminals everywhere.

‎Lira headed to a public terminal. "I'll search for Convergence references. You check the restricted section."

‎Dex nodded. He flashed a forged ID chip Sera had given him. The security drone scanned it. Approved.

‎The restricted section was darker. Quieter. Only a few scholars present.

‎He sat at a terminal. Typed in keywords: Eclipse Core. Sovereign. Apex Echo.

‎Results poured in. Ancient logs. Fragments of prophecy. One entry caught his eye.

‎**Apex Fragment Log – Designation: Echo-01**

‎**Host: Unknown**

‎**Status: Active. Tier: Apex**

‎**Note: The Echo moves alone. No crew. No allies. She seeks convergence. Or destruction. Approach with extreme caution.**

‎A video fragment attached. Grainy. Old.

‎Dex played it.

‎The footage showed a ruined planet. A single figure standing in the center of a crater. Black armor. Flowing cape of energy. Purple light radiating from her chest.

‎She raised a hand. Void energy gathered. Then exploded outward. A wave that leveled everything. Ships. Buildings. Mutants. All gone in seconds.

‎The camera shook. Then cut to static.

‎Dex felt cold. The Core in his chest thrummed. Recognition.

‎*She is coming.*

‎He closed the file. Stood.

‎That's when the alarms went off.

‎Not station-wide. Localized. The restricted section.

‎Scholars looked up. Confused.

‎Then the lights dimmed. Red emergency glow.

‎A voice echoed through the hall. Calm. Female. Cold.

‎"Nullborn Sovereign candidate. Your Core calls to mine."

‎Dex spun.

‎From the shadows at the far end of the hall stepped Nova Reyes.

‎She was exactly as the visions showed. Tall. Lithe. Black armor that seemed to drink light. Cape of shifting purple energy. Eyes glowing faintly. The fragment in her chest visible through a transparent panel. Brighter. Stronger. More complete than his.

‎She carried no weapon. She did not need one.

‎Scholars scrambled. Ran for exits.

‎Dex drew his hammer. Extended it fully. "You the Apex Echo?"

‎Nova tilted her head. "And you are the one who refuses to die."

‎Lira burst into the section. Stun pistol raised. "Dex!"

‎Nova glanced at her. Dismissive. "Stay back, tinkerer. This is between us."

‎Dex stepped forward. Rage already building. "If you're here to kill me, get on with it."

‎Nova smiled. Thin. Dangerous. "Kill you? Not yet. You are not ready."

‎She raised her hand. Void energy gathered. Not an attack. A demonstration.

‎The air rippled. Time seemed to slow.

‎Then she moved.

‎One moment she stood fifty meters away. The next she was in front of Dex. Hand on his chest. Over the Core.

‎He swung the hammer. She caught it. Effortless. The impact rang like a bell.

‎She pushed.

‎Dex flew back. Crashed through a terminal. Sparks flew.

‎Lira fired. Rune bolts streaked toward Nova.

‎Nova waved her hand. The bolts bent. Curved away. Harmless.

‎She looked at Lira. "Impressive work. But insufficient."

‎Dex stood. Rage at full. Corruption jumping to 35%. Pain lanced through him.

‎He teleported. Appeared behind her. Hammer swung.

‎Nova spun. Blocked with her forearm. The armor did not even scratch.

‎She grabbed his wrist. Twisted.

‎Dex felt bone creak. Then she released. Shoved him again.

‎He hit the wall. Hard.

‎"Pathetic," Nova said. "You fight like a scavenger. Desperate. Unrefined."

‎Dex coughed. Blood on his lips. Nanites already working.

‎He activated Eclipse Surge. Void tendrils lashed out.

‎Nova stepped through them. Untouched. "You still do not understand. The void does not fight you. It waits for you to break."

‎She walked forward slowly.

‎Dex pushed off the wall. Hammer raised.

‎Then the station security finally arrived. Drones. Armed guards.

‎Nova glanced at them. "Interference."

‎She snapped her fingers.

‎Void wave. Small. Controlled.

‎The drones dropped. Guards froze. Then collapsed.

‎Lira ran to Dex. Helped him up.

‎Nova stopped. "You grow. Slowly. But you grow. When you are ready, I will return. And we will see who becomes the Sovereign."

‎She turned. Walked toward the exit.

‎The energy cape flowed behind her.

‎Then she was gone. Vanished into shadow.

‎Silence.

‎Dex leaned on Lira. Breathing hard.

‎Corruption at 42%. Dropping slowly.

‎Lira looked at him. "That was her."

‎"Yeah."

‎"She could have killed us."

‎"She wanted to test us."

‎Dex straightened. "We need to get stronger. Fast."

‎They grabbed what data they could. Fled the station.

‎Back on the Nomad, alarms quieted.

‎Dex sat in the pilot seat. Staring at the stars.

‎Lira bandaged a cut on his forehead. "She was toying with us."

‎"She's always going to be ahead," Dex said. "Until I close the gap."

‎Lira met his eyes. "Then we close it. Together."

‎Dex nodded.

‎The Core whispered. *She tests. She waits. Become worthy.*

‎Dex clenched his fist.

‎The next fragment was out there.

‎And the race was on.

  • Crew of the Damned

‎Chapter 6: Crew of the Damned‎‎The Nomad emerged from hyperspace on the fringes of the Iron Veil sector, far from the Dead Nebula’s grasp. The ship’s hull still groaned from the storm’s punishment, but they had made it. Dex cut the engines to minimal power and let the vessel drift among a cluster of small asteroid outposts. No signals. No pursuit. For the first time in days, silence felt earned.‎‎He leaned back in the pilot chair, eyes closed. Tier 2 power hummed under his skin like a second pulse. The new skills—Void Dominion and Eclipse Armor—waited like loaded weapons. He could feel them. Ready. Hungry.‎‎Lira stood in the doorway of the cockpit, arms crossed. She had been quiet since the derelict. Watching him more than usual.‎‎“You’re different,” she said finally.‎‎Dex opened his eyes. “Good different or bad different?”‎‎“Both.” She stepped inside. “You move faster. Hit harder. But every time you use the new stuff, your eyes… they get darker. Like the void is leaking

‎Chapter 5: The Price of Power‎‎The Nomad limped away from Vespera Station, engines running hot after the emergency jump. Dex sat in the pilot chair, knuckles white on the controls. His armor was scorched in places where Nova's casual shove had sent him through steel and crystal. The nanites were already repairing, but the ache in his ribs lingered.‎‎Corruption sat at 38%. Stable, but high. Every heartbeat felt like a warning.‎‎Lira paced behind him, boots echoing on the metal floor. She had not spoken since they broke dock. Finally, she stopped.‎‎"That was her. The Apex Echo."‎‎"Yeah."‎‎"She didn't even try. She could have ripped the Core out of your chest and walked away."‎‎Dex kept his eyes on the starfield. "She wants me to grow first. Test me. Break me. Whatever the prophecy bullshit says."‎‎Lira came around to face him. "And you're going to play her game?"‎‎"No choice. She's miles ahead. If I don't close the gap, I'm dead the next time she decides the test is o

  • Shadows in the Black Market

‎Chapter 3: Shadows in the Black Market‎‎The Nomad emerged from hyperspace on the edge of the Fringe Belt, a sprawling zone of asteroid stations, pirate havens, and black-market hubs that even the biggest corporations avoided unless they had overwhelming firepower. Nexus Station had been chaotic. This place, called Shadow Drift, made Nexus look like a polite tea party.‎‎Dex cut the engines to idle. The ship drifted among the debris field. Scans showed dozens of docked vessels. Most were patched-together wrecks. A few looked like they could still fight.‎‎Lira leaned over the console. "Shadow Drift. You sure about this?"‎‎"We need upgrades," Dex said. "The hammer is strong, but the armor is still street-grade. And we need intel on what the hell an Eclipse Core really is."‎‎Lira tapped the master core they had taken from the forge-world. It sat in a containment field on the workbench. "This thing is singing to your Core like a siren. If we integrate it, you might jump tiers ove

  • Forge shadows

‎Chapter 2: Forge Shadows‎‎The Nomad dropped out of hyperspace with a groan that Dex felt in his teeth. The forge-world loomed ahead, a scarred gray ball hanging in the void. Rings of debris orbited it like broken halos. Factories long silent. Forges cold. But the data chips Lira pulled from the outpost console promised untouched vaults. High-grade rune cores. Magitech schematics. Enough to buy them breathing room from the corp hunters.‎‎Dex kept his eyes on the scanner. "No signals. No patrols. Looks quiet."‎‎"Too quiet," Lira muttered. She sat cross-legged on the co-pilot seat, tools spread across her lap. A small welding torch hissed as she reinforced a weak spot on Dex's armor. "Forge-worlds like this attract scavengers. Or worse."‎‎Dex flexed his shoulder. The patch from Zorath still itched, but the Eclipse Core's nanites had already knit the flesh. "Worse than mutants?"‎‎"Mutants are predictable. They click and charge. Purists? They preach. Then they burn."‎‎Purists.

  • Scavenger falls

‎Chapter 1: Scavenger's Fall‎‎The air on Zorath Prime hung thick with the stench of decay. Dex Taylor crouched behind a crumbled wall of what used to be a towering arcology. His breath came in short bursts through the filter mask strapped to his face. Void spores floated in the dim light like deadly snowflakes. One wrong inhale and you were done. Turned into one of those clicking horrors that shambled through the ruins.‎‎Dex gripped his makeshift plasma cutter tight. It was a jury-rigged piece of junk. Salvaged from a crashed freighter last month. But it had saved his skin more times than he could count. He was a Nullborn. No magic flowing through his veins like the elite Hex-Engineers up in their orbital stations. Just wits, grit, and whatever tech he could scrounge.‎‎The planet was off-limits for a reason. The Convergence had hit here hard centuries ago. Magic and AI tech slammed together in some cosmic accident. Now the place was a graveyard of fused horrors. Bio-machines tha
