Chapter 4: The Griffins

“HOW did you come in here?” Georgina looked horrified that she had to hover around him near the exit. “Have you gone crazy, Max? Why did you follow me here?” She lowered her voice, careful that someone might hear her.

Max concealed his astonishment. He didn’t want to converse with her, especially since he knew Georgina was probably there with her lover.

“I just came to check on something,” he said.

“Check on something? Or are you following me?” Georgina scoffed. “I know our divorce was so sudden. But you have to move on. Get a life! Don’t be a sore loser like you used to.”

“I’m sorry, I wasn’t expecting you’d see me here,” Max said in a low voice.

“Oh, come on! Don’t creep me out, will you? Besides, I’m dating someone new. Our divorce proceedings are almost final.” Georgina was proud to say it, as if they had been separated for a long time.

“Should I congratulate you, then? It’s only been days since I signed the divorce papers, Georgina.”

Georgina’s jaw dropped. It was the first time in a very long time that she heard him call her name that way. Max had always been soft-spoken and had never been this sarcastic. He was so kind, to the point that she assumed he was weak.

It took her a while before she found the words to say. She cleared her throat and gazed at him from head to foot with a disgusted look on her face.

“Look at you. I thought the security here was tight. I wonder how you passed through the guards with those… shitty clothes.”

Max let out a sigh. “I’m going home.”

“As you should! I don’t want anybody here to know we’re related, okay?” Georgina looked around. “Theodore must’ve been looking for me.”

“So, it’s Theodore now.” Max sadly smiled. “I only want your happiness. I hope he won’t hurt you.”

Georgina rolled her eyes heavenward. “Don’t be overly dramatic, Max. Of course, Theodore won’t hurt me. He loves to pamper me with all the luxury in the world.”

Max didn’t say a word. He studied her face, her eyes glinted with eagerness as she mentioned luxury. Perhaps he was so busy that he had not noticed that she had changed a lot.

“Anyway, I should go back inside. I only went out to smoke.”

“Take this unsolicited advice from your ex-husband; don’t lose yourself chasing all the material things in this world. I hope this time you’ll find contentment.” Max meant what he said.

Georgina chuckled. “Don’t give me that shit. Are you a motivational speaker now? You’re just poor! That’s why you’re saying that.”

“You may be right.” Max tilted his head in agreement.

“Whatever, adios!” She left without turning back.

Max waited until his ex-wife left out of sight. He gazed at her as she entered the chapel. He realized Georgina looked happy, and even though their separation was messy, he had no plan of telling her he knew she had cheated.

Everything was over. Besides, he had a fair share of secrets as well, but not about infidelity. Now, he had to face bigger problems than his divorce.

“Hey, Max! Are you all right? Did something happen with you and Amanda?” Oliver inquisitively asked when he saw him alone in the parking area.

“Nothing. Just a threat.” He chuckled. “I assured her not to worry, as I’m not interested in anything.”

“Don’t mind her. She’s just intimidating you, but she’s soft-hearted, believe me. I saw her grow up before my eyes.”

“It’s obvious I’m not welcome here, Oliver. Just do the things they want and let me live my life.”

“Your life will never be the same again, Max. You can deny it all you want, but it’s the truth.”

Max let out a deep sigh. “It will be my choice, Oliver.”

“Unfortunately, you don’t have a choice.”

GEORGINA’S face lit up as she saw Theodore talking with a woman. Of course, she knew who the lady was.

Amanda Griffin!

She strolled towards them, but Theodore was already dismissed. Georgina frowned as she lost her chance to meet the well-known socialite. Aside from Amanda, another regal-looking lady approached the former.

“Oh my god! Is that Isla Turner?” Georgina’s eyes widened. She was mumbling beside Theodore around the corner. “I can’t believe I’ll see Amanda Griffin in the flesh. Her presence exudes authority! And now there’s Isla, the heiress of Turner Estate! Her beauty is unrivaled!” Georgina could not deny she was fangirling over the ladies.

“Lower your voice, sweetheart.” Theodore shushed her, especially since three ladies near them were gossiping about something.

Georgina couldn’t help but pry about their conversations.

“Did you see him? I wonder why Amanda is fuming. That could be the reason!” said the girl with brunette hair.

“I missed seeing him. But he’s causing a stir among the Griffins!” The woman with long blonde hair murmured. “The new heir has been named.”

The third lady giggled. “I saw him. The man looked young and hot! Typically, my type!”

Georgina wanted to know about the tea. So she pulled Theodore closer. “What is going on?”

He lightly shook his head. “It’s inappropriate to talk about it at this wake.”

“I can wait later in the car,” she winked.

Theodore socialized a little during the wake. Georgina never got a chance to be acquainted with the Griffins, especially Amanda.

Georgina couldn’t wait to know what was happening when they were in the car.

“My love, tell me about this new heir. Spill the tea, will you?”

“Well, according to what I heard, Lucas Griffin left a last will, giving all his fortunes to his long-lost grandson.”

“Oh, what a family drama! I’m loving it!” Her eyes gleamed. “Who’s grandson?”

“I heard his name is Maximus Griffin.”

Georgina pouted her lips. “I haven’t heard of him.”

“Neither have I. And you know what’s crazier? They said this man had no background in business at all.”

“Whoa!” Georgina was enjoying the gossip. While in the car, her vision caught her ex-husband surrounded by uniformed security.

She pretended not to see him. They must be dragging him out since he was uninvited there.
