Fall back! Ronan shouted to the corridor as the huge steel blast door groaned and deformed under another huge impact.

He sprinted up the ramp, his heart beating fast. The tactical knife in his hand felt useless against whatever huge force was hitting the reinforced barrier. The heavy granite walls of the Blackwood Silo shook, shedding dust and loose rock onto his path.

Boom.

Another impact warped the center of the steel door,, breaking the glowing spiral symbol etched into its surface. The air grew hot, thick with the smell of ozone and sulfur. Ronan realized with a jolt that this wasn't a random monster. The Chrono Covenant had deliberately sealed something inside his sanctuary.

This was his big struggle in this new life: he had all the knowledge of a veteran survivor, but his body was still just that of a regular human. He had no superpowers, no abilities and no high-tech weaponry yet. If that door broke now, he would be killed.

He reached the control room, a glass-walled booth overlooking the main corridor. The old military console was dead, stripped of its components decades ago. Ronan didn't panic. He ripped open the maintenance panel beneath the metal desk, exposing the emergency bypass levers. His engineering background helped him. He knew the layout of these Cold War structures well.

He grabbed the rusted iron lever labeled Emergency Purge. If he pulled it, it would flood the subterranean level with liquid nitrogen from the old cooling tanks, freezing everything inside. It would also break the internal pipes, destroying the infrastructure he had spent millions to secure.

It was a decision. Damaging his sanctuary now meant delaying his defense preparations, leaving him exposed. Staying alive was his top priority.

Ronan gritted his teeth. Slammed his weight against the lever.

A loud hiss echoed through the bunker as pressurized, sub-zero gas erupted through the ventilation below. The monstrous pounding on the blast door slowed, replaced by a pitched, painful shriek that vibrated through the concrete floors. Frost rapidly crawled up the walls, turning the corridor into an icy tomb.

The pounding stopped. The entity was contained, at least for now.

Ronan slumped against the console, his breath in the suddenly cold air. He had survived. The stakes had just been raised. The apocalypse wasn't waiting for day zero. The timeline was actively breaking because of his actions.

Who is there? Ronan snapped, his combat instincts flaring as a shift in the shadows caught his attention. He spun around, raising his knife.

Standing at the top of the ramp, completely unfazed by the sub-zero temperature, was a figure draped in a heavy, tattered charcoal coat. The face was hidden beneath a hood, but Ronan could see two bright pale blue eyes staring directly at him.

The stranger didn't attack. They didn't draw a weapon. They simply stood there observing him like a scientist watching a specimen.

You are supposed to be dead the stranger said, their voice layered with a resonance that didn't sound entirely human. You died outside the gates. Ninety-nine times you died outside the gates. Why are you inside the mountain?

Ronan's blood turned cold. The stranger knew about his lives. They knew about his deaths.

Who are you? Ronan demanded, taking a step forward. How do you know about that?

The observer didn't answer. They slowly raised a hand and pointed toward the ceiling, where a strange hairline fracture was beginning to form in the air glowing with a faint unstable purple light.

The script has been altered, the stranger whispered, their form beginning to blur and fade into the shadows. The Executors are already waking. You stole tomorrow, Ronan Steele. You forgot to check the price tag.

Before Ronan could lunge forward to grab them, the figure vanished, leaving behind nothing but the scent of burnt ash.

Ronan stared at the space, his mind reeling. The mystery of the Future Archive was deepening. He wasn't the player on the board.

He checked his watch. It was nearing dusk. He had to leave the silo to gather survival supplies. He had to get stronger. He needed the system to give him something lethal.

He spent several hours driving back to his motel in silence. He had cut off Clara and severed his ties with Julian. Now he was being hunted by entities that existed outside of time. Every relationship he had ever relied on was gone.

At 11:59 PM, Ronan sat on the edge of his bed staring at his phone. The internet was melting down over the Eastbridge Tunnel collapse. Conspiracy theories were everywhere. Nobody knew the truth.

The digital clock flipped to 12:00 AM.

The motel room lights cut out. The familiar blinding blue interface materialized in the darkness.

Future Archive System Activated.

The text materialized, followed by three glowing files.

File One: Tomorrow's Memory Fragment. Unlocks the blueprints of the Chrono Covenants headquarters.

File Two: Tomorrow's Combat Experience. Gives Ronan master-level arts and tactical firearms proficiency.

File Three: Tomorrow's Obituary. Contains the names, locations and times of death for the five individuals who will attempt to assassinate Ronan Steele at 8:00 AM tomorrow.

Ronan stared at the file, his breath hitching. The betrayal was starting already. The countdown hadn't even hit ninety-nine days. Someone had already hired a hit squad to kill him.

"Die down there alone, Ronan!" Clara's voice snapped off as a blast of static killed the radio. The rusted metal speaker on the wall exploded into bright sparks, leaving behind a heavy, ringing silence that pressed painfully against Ronan's eardrums. Then the world went completely sideways. The thick concrete floor beneath the medical depot tilted violently. Massive support columns groaned under sudden stress, long cracks branching across the ceiling like spiderwebs as a terrible, invisible force pulled down from above. It was not a bomb, and it was not an artillery strike from the Vance Group. It was sheer weight. Unnatural, crushing mass settling directly onto the city streets five levels above his head. The upside-down pyramid, the Origin, was grounding itself in the central square of Eastbridge. Ronan was thrown off the examination table, his boots skidding across the hard tile floor. A wave of sharp pain shot through his left shoulder where the inhibitor needle had numbly fro

That was all the Covenant was giving this district before whatever they called the second phase wiped it off the map.Above him, the subway ceiling groaned as another tremor shook the concrete arches. Dust rained down in thick gray curtains, coating his tongue with the taste of dry chalk and old blood. His left arm hung useless at his side, numb from the shoulder down where the gray rot had sunk deep into his muscle. The burn he had inflicted on himself earlier was cracking open again, leaking dark, thick fluid down his sleeve. If he did not reach the underground medical depot soon, the rot

"Shoot anything that moves! Don't let him reach the lower streets!"The shout bounced off the cracked concrete walls of the old highway pass. Two heavy flashlight beams cut through the gray smoke, sweeping over the wrecked cars at the bottom of the mountain road. Up on the ridge, three soldiers wearing Vance Group gear were climbing down over the broken guardrail. Their boots kicked loose stones down the slope.Ronan pressed his back against the rusted side of an overturned city bus. He held his breath. His left shoulder felt like someone had driven a hot spike into his bones, and the smell of his own burned skin made his stomach turn. He squeezed the grip of his plasma rifle with his right hand. The weapon was heavy, and the energy display showed twenty-five percent. Three shots left if he fired at full power. He could not afford to waste a single shot."He came down this way!" one of the soldiers yelled, his voice close enough that Ronan could hear the crunch of broken glass under h

  • Chapter 11: Ash and Iron

Get up, Ronan told himself. The voice in his head was not the system. It was the memories of the special forces commander screaming at Ronan to keep moving. Ronan dropped to his knees. The heavy Vanguard-Class Plasma Rifle fell to the ground, hitting the concrete with a noise. The blood from Leos and Elias' bodies was around him. It had even reached his boots. The leather was warm and sticky with blood. He had done this. Ronan had tried to run from the bad things that were happening, but he had led his brother into danger instead. Clara had helped their enemies by selling them out. Ronan had given them the chance to do it. Ronan reached out. Closed Leo's eyes. They were empty and still. I will burn them Ronan said quietly. I will burn everything to the ground. Make them pay. Ronan felt a pain in his head. He was dizzy. Had to grab his left shoulder. The cuts from the monster were bleeding a lot.
