The word "BEGIN!" still echoed across the training yard, bouncing off the wooden barriers and fading into the evening air. But nothing happened.

Jabber stood in his fighting stance, his feet shoulder-width apart, his knees bent and his hands raised in a guard position that looked textbook correct but somehow fragile, like the whole posture might collapse at any moment.

His weight was balanced on the balls of his feet, ready to move, but he wasn't moving. Just standing there, frozen, his dark eyes locked on his opponent.

Brick hadn't bothered with any stance at all. He just stood there, completely relaxed, arms hanging loose at his sides, head tilted slightly to one side like he was examining something mildly interesting but not particularly threatening.

His massive frame cast a long shadow across the ring as the torches flickered behind him, making him look even larger, even more imposing.

The two of them simply stared at each other.

Five seconds passed. Then ten. Then fifteen.

"Essentially, yes." Kael said with a dry smile. "I found out later that this particular dragon got lonely easily. It was a social creature by nature, enjoyed interaction and conversation and debate. But obviously it couldn't exactly walk into a human city and make friends. So when opportunities for interaction presented themselves, it took them. Even if the other party wasn't exactly willing.""That's..." Asta paused, trying to find the right word. "That's actually kind of sad?""It was sad." Kael agreed. "But also terrifying from my perspective. Because I didn't know if 'chat' was a euphemism for 'torture you for information' or 'eat you very slowly' or what. So I just sat there, trying not to move my broken leg, trying not to pass out from pain and waited to see what would happen."His fingers drummed on his walking stick again, the rhythm increasing slightly as he got to the meat of the story. "The dragon started talking. Just... talking about things. About how long it had b

"I stepped on loose gravel. My foot slipped out from under me. And suddenly I was falling, not just stumbling, but actually falling down the side of a ravine I didn't know was there. Must have dropped twenty, thirty feet before I hit the bottom. Landed wrong.”“I heard something crack in my leg that definitely shouldn't crack. Everything went black."Kael's hand moved unconsciously to his left leg, rubbing at what was probably an old injury that still bothered him on cold days. "When I woke up and I had no idea how long I was out, it could have been minutes or hours. I wasn't in the ravine anymore. I was in a cave. Big cave, deep cave, with walls that glowed faintly purple like they were lined with some kind of luminescent crystal."His voice dropped lower, taking on an edge of remembered fear. "And there were eyes. Enormous eyes, each one bigger than my head, glowing bright purple with actual flames flickering in them. Dragon eyes. Right in my face, maybe two feet from my nose, sta

The question hung in the air, and there was something almost challenging in it, like Kael was testing to see if Asta would figure it out on his own.Asta's mind raced, trying to remember anything from history class, from old stories, from legends he'd heard in passing. Dragons with purple flames. Dragons that served the Lord Emperor. Dragons that would call someone "master" and bow in absolute terror. Dragons that…Nothing. His mind came up completely blank. He didn't know. Hadn't even known dragons still existed until about ten minutes ago, and now he was supposed to identify specific types? He rubbed the back of his head, his hand moving through his hair in a nervous gesture he'd never quite managed to break. "Uhmm..." He let out an awkward laugh that was more like a nervous exhalation. "I don't... I don't actually have any idea. At all. I wasn't really paying attention during the dragon history lessons because, you know, they were supposedly all dead and it didn't seem relevant

Asta stood frozen in the clinic room, his mouth still hanging slightly open, his eyes locked on Old Man Kael's weathered face like he was trying to read some hidden message written in the lines and wrinkles there. His brain felt like it had stalled out completely, unable to process what he'd just heard, unable to make the words mean anything coherent.Jabber is like you.The sentence kept repeating in his mind, bouncing around like a trapped bird, but he couldn't grasp what it actually meant. Like him, how? In what way? They were both in the labor section? Both struggling? Both had been rejected by elite squads? Those were surface similarities, circumstantial connections that didn't warrant the gravity in Kael's voice when he'd said it.Asta's gaze shifted away from Kael, moving slowly to where Jabber lay unconscious on the clinic bed. His friend, his guild mate, looked so normal lying there. Just a young man, barely twenty, his face bruised and bloodied from the fight, his chest risi

After about two minutes of examination, which felt like an eternity to Asta, who stood tensely watching her every move, she straightened up and turned to face the three of them."He's just worn out." She said matter-of-factly. "Pushed his body way past its limits and it forced him into unconsciousness to protect itself. The injuries on his face are superficial, they look worse than they are because head wounds bleed a lot. He'll wake up on his own when his body's had enough rest. Probably in an hour or two, maybe sooner."Asta felt tension he hadn't realized he'd been carrying drain out of his shoulders. "So he's going to be okay?""He'll be fine." The nurse confirmed. "I'll give him some pain relief pills for when he wakes up,that face is going to hurt something fierce. And he should take it easy for a few days, no strenuous activity and let his body recover properly. But there's no permanent damage. He's young and healthy,he'll bounce back.""Thank you." Flora said sincerely. "T

Flora asked, already reaching to check Jabber's pulse at his neck. Her fingers found the steady thump, and she nodded. "Pulse is strong. He's just unconscious.""We need to get him to the clinic." Mira said practically, already moving to help lift him. "Whatever happened to him, whatever that transformation was, it clearly took everything out of him."Asta nodded, sliding his arms under Jabber's shoulders while Mira took his legs. Together they lifted him,he wasn't particularly heavy, all lean muscle and bone and began carrying him toward the ring's exit. The crowd watched them go, still murmuring:"It seems like he went beyond his limits and wore himself out.""That makes sense, manifesting that much power, fighting that intensely, it would exhaust anyone.""But what about the purple flame? I've never seen flames that color before.""Maybe it's a rare variation? Some unusual manifestation?""Or maybe he was using a forbidden technique? Something that burns through your life force?"
