Chapter 01

In a grand and magnificent house stood a clan well known for producing countless powerful cultivators who had now spread across many cities, becoming officials of kingdoms and empires alike.

In Dashan City, this clan stood firm, untouchable, and none dared to cause trouble or provoke them.

Yet, an undesired misfortune befell them. A young man, known to be kind-hearted and immensely talented—once hailed as the future successor of the Patriarch—had now suffered a downfall.

He now lay weak, his energy core destroyed by an unknown assailant. Once admired as a prodigy, he was now deemed trash and mocked by his peers.

Typically, a child would begin training at the age of five. Two years later, they were expected to condense Qi and reach the early stage of the Black Realm. Failure to do so meant being labeled defective, with little chance of ever reaching the highest realms.

But the story was different for the son of Patriarch Chen. At five years old, he had already broken into the Black Realm, and by the age of ten, he had reached the Core Energy Realm. Such achievements stirred envy not only among the other children but also among their parents.

Until a fateful incident occurred a month ago…

He refused to accept his condition, yet what could he do? Every medicine, every treasure had been exhausted in an attempt to repair his energy core, yet no result was shown.

For months, Patriarch Chen Long searched for the culprit, but no progress was made. The only clue was a star-shaped tattoo on the wrist of the one who had crippled his son.

“What a pitiful fate you have, my child!” A tearful voice echoed, accompanied by a mother’s embrace, wetting the face of the ten-year-old boy.

“I am tired, Mother. Tired of being insulted, called trash. I’d rather die than bear this shame, dragging our family’s name into humiliation!”

“Don’t say such things, my son. You must be strong—you are the heir of the clan!” His mother tried to remain steadfast, but her words were difficult to reconcile with reality. For a clan leader had to be strong, not weak and powerless without Qi or inner energy.

“Oh, Mother, you are too kind. Father’s position itself may soon be replaced, for the wolves’ stomachs are growling, eager to tear our small family apart. I am certain what happened to me was the work of someone inside. There’s no need to look far—only the elders knew the place where I trained. This is the beginning of a conspiracy!” Chen Nian voiced his suspicion.

And indeed, such suspicions often missed little.

“It seems you are right. I too only now realize, for I trusted them too much to ever doubt. I will take you to meet Grandpa Ling in Linggau City. Pack your things.” Ling Hua spoke gently and left her son’s room. She walked back toward her chamber to see her husband.

The door creaked open…

“Aaaahhh! Help! There’s a murderer!” Ling Hua screamed in horror upon seeing her husband collapsed, blood seeping from his stomach and mouth.

“Run, my love! We have been betrayed by everyone!”

Ling Hua dashed with all her strength after hearing her husband’s final command. As she ran, she called for the guards, but not a single one came. It was as if everything had been prearranged.

Ling Hua was not a cultivator. She was just an ordinary woman who had married the clan leader by fortune and her beauty. Now her life hung on the edge of death.

Chen Nian, hearing his mother’s scream, rushed out of his room. He saw a man chasing his mother, his weapon dripping with blood. He recognized the figure—it was First Elder Chen Rui, the father of Chen Kai, who had been mocking him relentlessly and even beating him these past days.

“Run, Nian Er! Save your life!” Ling Hua shouted when she saw the fear in her son’s eyes. Chen Nian froze, like a statue, unable to move even an inch.

“Quickly, my son! Run! I will hold him off!” With those words, her body convulsed as a sword pierced her back, thrusting through her chest.

Tears streamed down Chen Nian’s face. Even if his energy core were intact, he would still be powerless against them—let alone now, when it was shattered. He turned and ran, leaving his mother who had sacrificed herself to protect him.

The boy ran out of the house, the heavy rain pouring down as if the heavens themselves mourned his family’s fate.

The pain in his heart was unbearable. He would now be all alone. But within that grief, the fire of vengeance ignited, pushing him to live on.

“Father! Mother! I will avenge your deaths. By the heavens and the earth, and the rain that bears witness!” he screamed as he ran, uncaring of his broken sandals, uncaring of his frail and weak body.

The only thing he cared about now was surviving—so that one day, he could gain strength and ignite the fire of his vengeance.

Chen Rui leapt, kicking off a tree to propel himself far forward, quickly closing in on the fleeing Chen Nian.

That night, the world felt deathly silent, as if only the boy and the First Elder existed, locked in a chase within the clan grounds.

“You cannot run any longer, boy. Hand over the Dragon Bracelet you’re hiding!”

Chen Nian was cornered against a wall. There was no escape. Shouting was useless—for now, several clan members had emerged, yet they only stood watching. Their silence revealed their complicity.

“The strong shall rule!” declared Elder Chen Zhi, a trusted confidant of Chen Long. “Hand over the Dragon Bracelet—the symbol of the Chen Clan’s leadership. Do so, and perhaps the future Patriarch will show you mercy.” His words bore no warmth, only cold cruelty.

“Hahaha!” Chen Rui laughed harshly. “Now you see! Life is about choosing strength over weakness! Chen Long is unfit to be Patriarch, for he has a crippled son like you! He never cared for us—only for you, a boy who can no longer cultivate! Angry, are you?!” Chen Rui’s eyes burned with madness. “Hand over the Dragon Bracelet! Or else!”

“I don’t have it! I already told you, I don’t have it!” the boy cried, voice trembling with the helpless tone of a child under intimidation. “But I will remember this day, and your faces! Remember this—if I survive, if I gain strength, I will return one day to demand retribution for the hatred burning within my heart!”

With that, he pressed something on the wall. A hidden mechanism clicked, and a secret passage opened. His small body fell into it and was swept away by the underground river’s current.

Everyone knew of that escape route—designed for clan members in case of sudden attack.

“I will chase him!” Chen Zhi leapt, but was stopped by Chen Rui.

“No need. That river is filled with crocodiles. If you go after him, it will be in vain. By now, he is surely inside one of their bellies. Do not do anything foolish. Cleanse this clan of the blood and the corpses of that husband and wife. Spread the word of their deaths with some embellishment, and then… we shall hold the ceremony to appoint a new Patriarch!” Chen Rui said with a triumphant smile.
