Chapter 40. The Edge of Becoming

The chamber was silent after the blast. Smoke curled in the air. The ground was cracked, glowing veins exposed like broken wires under skin.

Pieces of flesh and bone dripped from the ceiling, shaken loose by the explosion, and in the center of it all lay Jonah.

His body was twisted on the floor, his chest rising only slightly. His skin was burned, his clothes torn, his arms bloodied. He did not move. The Hive whispered with delight. “At last. He breaks.”

Kevin stood a few feet away, trembling. His hands glowed faintly gold, smoke rising from his fingers.

His eyes shone too bright, but they were wet with tears. His lips trembled as he whispered: “Jonah?”

He stepped forward once, uncertain. His hands dropped to his sides. His breathing was fast and uneven, like a frightened child, but Olos was there.

The man stepped calmly from the wall again, smooth and unharmed, his white coat untouched by blood.
