Cole Asher left the military after a traumatic experience and spent the next three years working as a night security guard when the Grey plague hit.
It mutated over 40% of the earthâs population and turned humans into Greysâa pale, black veined and feral creature that fed on survivors.
Among the survivors, a rare biological defense called the âAwakened Cellâ turned a few into a specie that slowly adapted to the plagueâs miasma.
However, the unlucky âUnawakenedâ lived at risk of getting infected by the pollution and by which the government ranked them as lowest in the new order of humanity.
Cole survived the first night, then the first week and when the government P.A.X's IDENT drone hovered around him for identification scan, it registered nothing.
He wasnât a bloodthirsty Grey, an Awakened or an Unawakened either.
Word spread fast, and soon enough The Guilds wanted control over him. The P.A.X planned to harvest every drop of what ran through his veins and The Red Chain tried to contain him as a potential threat.
Nonetheless, desperate survivors crossed the Grey zones on foot just to reach Cole. They were bitten, bleeding and holding onto a rumor that a man could heal their infections.
One last immune, whose blood was the cure.

Chapter: Chapter Sixteen: Foolproof Plan
Dana laid out every detail sheâd gathered from Cole and came up with a plan, swearing her idea was a hundred percent foolproof. Cole sat on a foldable chair in the corner and tried his hardest to listen to her, propping his chin in his hand but he was agitated with every second he spent under the nose of Director Hale. âWe are going to give Director Hale your samples to steal; your spoons, a handkerchief, and napkins and then we wait for him to fall for the bait.â Dana said, while pacing around the tent. âAnd how would we know my spoon or napkin was the one taken out of the trash can?â Cole stood up restlessly and took a peek outside the tent, his eyes slowly observing his surrounding. âI have a lipstick!â Dana grinned from ear to ear and dug into the front pocket of her duffel bag. âThe red lipstick stain will be a subtle indicator for every item you use today.â Cole turned around and quirked a brow at her. "You carry a lipstick?" "I carry what I need." She shrugged, stil

Chapter: Chapter Fifteen: The P.A.X Medic
While Cole was sleeping, he felt a slight pressure of a finger making a careful, quick pinch at the back of his head.âWhoâs there?!â He jerked and rubbed the throbbing spot at the back of his head, his eyes sweeping across the empty tent in one fast motion. The tent was exactly how heâd left it last night, Dana was still asleep in the far corner and nothing was out of place. However, the nipping sensation on his scalp proved someone was in his room and that person had definitely touched him.Rolling off his sleeping bag, Cole ran outside the tent shirtless with his dark hair tousled, ready to take on the intruder. It was almost 6 AM, the air was freezing, the camp was barely awake and the morning sun had already begun to paint the sky in orange hues. The only people outside were survivors who couldnât sleep or those who needed to wait in line before the long breakfast queue but Cole immediately sighted his suspect. It was a young woman walking away from his tent in long strides, he

Chapter: Chapter Fourteen: Contract Denied
"What did you call me?" A frigid air caught up Coleâs throat as he struggled to breathe, his vision burning dry around the edges. In three long years, heâd never been addressed by that nameâŠ. a name which weighed more than a thousand lives on his shoulders. Lieutenant? No, he was no second-in-command. He had failed. He had lost his honor to that title. "I took the privilege of investigating more about you, Lieutenant Asher." Director Hale hummed and gave a nonchalant shrug. Cole grabbed a fistful of his P.A.X jacket and pulled Director Hale closer to him, their faces inches away he could smell the coffee from his breath. "What do you think you know about me?!" Cole barked at him. Director Hale slowly pointed his index finger toward the watch tower where multiple officers stood with rifles up and ready to open fire. âOne signal from me and youâd be dead Lieutenant Asher.â âStop calling me that!â He yelled and searched the manâs face. There was no way Director Hale would know ab

Chapter: Chapter Thirteen: Lieutenant Cole Asher
Two days passed in a whirlwind and Cole Asher had already learnt the ways of the camp. The pattern was pretty obvious. Breakfast started at 7 AM, and section one and two lines were always served first. P.A.X officers positioned themselves to separate the higher awakened survivors â S, A, B, C from the lower, enforcing the new law and order. However, by the time the unawakened survivors reach the front of the line, the best food portions were already finished and the servers begin scraping the bottom of the pots. Cole watched this happen on his first morning and nearly began a riot but Malcolm came over to warn him about the building they kept survivors who violated camp order. He wasnât intimidated by concealed building in the slightest, but was very dissatisfied with the thought of leaving Dana alone while heâs locked in there and so, he decided to overlook the situation. - - - On the morning of day three, Cole collected his half a portion meal and found an empty spot at the

Chapter: Chapter Twelve: New World Order
"Jesus Christ!" Dana pressed a hand to her chest as the stranger from the dark shadow startled her. "I thought you were a fucking Grey!" "My apologies." The man chuckled and clasped his hands together. "My name's Malcom, I'm an E rank survivor." he introduced himself and brought out a hand for a handshake. Cole strolled towards him and shook his hand. "I'm Cole, she's Dana and the dog's Biscuit." Malcolm nodded with a dimpled smile. "I guess you two are new," he said. "Did you come in this morning?" "Yeah," Dana replied. "Ahh, no wonder you got into a spot of bother with Bertha," He spoke with a poised British tone. "You know who she is?" "Everyone knows Bertha. She's a B ranker who gets double rations in section two but comes over to section four to ensure everyone gets one portion." "What?!" Dana exclaimed and drew the attention of nearby campers "She gets two portions per meal and she dared to call me a low class, low life thief?!" "Keep your voice down." Cole cautioned

Chapter: Chapter Eleven: Second Class Citizen
"Dana!" Cole pushed his way through the crowd and parted the gathering around him, trying to reach for her. Biscuit barked at the woman who stood over Dana but the woman kicked dirt into Biscuit's face, causing the poor dog to whimper in pain. The womanâwho was twice of Dana's ageâwore a blue wristband which indicated she was a B class awakened as she pointed her finger down at Dana. "Did you think I wouldn't see you steal another plate of food?!" She scoffed and trampled on Dana's feet. "You should be grateful they even let your kind into this place!" Dana stood up and shoved the woman hard on her chest, sending her flying into the crowd. "Don't you ever put your hands on me!" Dana yelled at her, "If you dare come close to me or my dog again, I swear I'll kill you!" "Did you see that?! This unawakened assaulted me and threatened to kill me!" The woman glanced around the crowd for support. "You people are just the same as those bloodthirsty Greys, you think you can justâ" "Get a
