Chapter Thirty Seven: ASHOLD II
Outside the main building, the putrid Grey miasma polluted everywhere and fogged the air and Cole sometimes forgot it existed once he was indoors. Cole found Reck checking out the back gate at the east entrance. "What’s up? I'm just making sure we have all exits secured." Reck struggled to untangle the heavy chains on the gate. "Thank you," Cole said. "You can lock the gate on the inside. Let's leave the west gate as the only exit and entrance." "One entrance and one exit?" Reck succeeded with untangling the chains and tested the gate's rolling mechanism. "Yes, that way it's easier to defend ourselves from any Grey attack." Cole explained. Reck quickly padlocked the gate and held unto the key. "Any other thing, my leader?" He stood erect and saluted Cole. "Yeah, quit calling me your leader." Cole rolled his eyes and Reck chuckled at the annoyed look on his best friend's face. They continued walking around the vast compound when Reck sighted a river down south. "Dude, look there’
Chapter Thirty Six: ASHOLD I
An old factory warehouse appeared out of the Grey zone. It was barricaded by a rust-streaked, metallic wall lined with barbed wires. The main gate was chained but not padlocked and Cole stopped to stare at the factory for a moment. "Hey." He started to speak and everyone halted at the sound of his voice. "This is it." He nodded at the building. He couldn't understand why... but something about it felt right. Reck ran his fingers over the rusty metallic wall and nodded. "Yeah, I think it has good bones.” "My goodness, we don't need an old factory." Brad shook his head. "This place will kill us faster than the Greys. Look at the place, it looks like a den for a bunch of drug dealers." The old man disagreed. However, Brad's opinions fell on deaf ears as Dana drew out the chains and pushed the main gate open. "Voila!" She strolled into the factory grounds and rolled her shoulders. "Let's check it out, shall we?" "Yooo, Dana wait for me." Reck followed after her, as a flat
Chapter Thirty Five: Seventy vs Seven
Cole, Dana, Brad and Reck each carried a rifle that belonged to the dead P.A.X officers at the grocery store. They continued their trekking towards the west end with grieving Charlotte and Eli, and only took short breaks for Aisha to rest her swollen feet. “We’ve been walking for hours now, we should at least know where we’re heading to.” Brad pestered Cole along the road. “We will know when we get there.” Cole said to him to but deep inside, he had absolutely no idea where they were going. In the entire city, the tall buildings were destroyed to the ground. The looted stores weren’t enough to fit seven of them and Cole envisioned something stronger with huge walls that could defend them. Arriving at the mouth of a tunnel — an underpass beneath the highway — Cole heard a low echoing growl, rolling through the Grey zone from above. It wasn’t a single snarl of one or two Greys, it was a deep growling sound as a pack of hungry Greys had smelt them from a mile away and was rushing in
Chapter Thirty Four: Hostage Situation
Cole pushed open the grocery door and stood still as six P.A.X officers had spread out in the store, pointing up their rifles at everyone. Dana stood opposite the cereal shelves, her one hand was raised in the air while Biscuit pressed to her chest in her other arm. Reck, who absentmindedly stepped into their trap, was beside Dana with his hands up. Brad stood in front of Aisha, shielding her from the gun pointed at their faces. Charlotte wrapped both arms around herself and Eli was by the shelving unit to Cole's left—small enough to slip out before the P.A.X officers locked the positions down. Keith wasn't in the store and Cole registered this immediately. "Leave them alone," Cole said. "I'm who you're here for." The head officer said to him. "Mr. Asher, Director Hale requests your presence at the consolidation camp." "You have my cooperation." Cole raised both hands. "Leave them and take me." The officer looked at him for a moment and looked at the others, calcul
Chapter Thirty Three: The Tour
Cole and Reck left the others inside and sat on the kerb outside the grocery store. “Man, this weather is crazy hot.” Reck sighed and shrugged off his jacket off, cracking open a can of soda. The street was empty in every direction. The Grey zone was quiet but Cole knew further down would be lurking with bloodthirsty Greys. Those creatures didn’t attack mindlessly anymore, they now hunted as a pack. It was almost as though they were evolving. "I can’t believe I’m staring at the end of the world." Reck said. “I can’t believe people can actually lose their minds and become monsters.” “People have always been monsters.” Cole snapped his knuckles. “The Plague only created a different kind.” Reck turned to him and smirked. "And you're the cure for these monsters…Did you know? Before all this." "No, I didn’t." How could he have known? It’s not like he signed up to be the last immune in an apocalypse. "Really? Not even a feeling?" "No." Reck nodded slowly. "Alright, I
Chapter Thirty Two: New Leader
Dana dragged a chair across the floor and sat legs open. “Listen here people.” She started. "P.A.X's consolidation camp runs on a ranking system." “Ranking system?” Brad’s thick brows furrowed in confusion. “Yes, keep up.” She leaned forward. “P.A.X scans everyone before entering the gate. S and A rankers are the highest and get section one privileges, such as double food portions, and clean water station. B and C are in section two. D and E in section three." “The lower your ranking, the lower your privileges and basic human right.” Cole clarified. Dana nodded. "And for the Unawakened like me, we get section four, where we receive the bottom-of-pot portions." Brad frowned. "That’s impossible." "Oooh, but it is," Dana said. "We watched it happen for a week. An unawakened child eats scraps while an adult with an Awakened cell gets fruits with his breakfast." She looked at Aisha. "Your baby will be scanned the moment it’s born. Whatever rank P.A.X assigns it determines h
