Chapter: Chapter ten: The Gravel Line
Gravel crunched as the ring tightened. On one side of the drive stood the two deputies, hands resting near their belts. On the other came Nora's head of security with four Kessler guards at his back, walking fast. Behind them, drifting up from the yard in twos and threes, came the dockworkers. They did not say anything. They lined the hedge in a long silent row and watched.Between the two sides, on the gravel, stood Walter Danforth. He had taken the folded paper from the deputy and now he held it up, unhurried, like a man displaying a winning ticket. "A violation notice," he said. "It states that Mr. Pruitt breached the terms of his parole. These men have every right to take him into custody."Nora came down one step. "I would love to see a judge's name on that.""It is signed by his parole officer.""Then it can wait for my lawyer." Her voice was even. "She will be here in twenty minutes. She can read it with me."Walter sighed, as if she were a child asking for one more story befor

Chapter: Chapter nine: Midnight At Pier Two
Pike did not raise his voice. He looked at the seven directors, still frozen in their leather chairs, and said, "I believe this meeting is adjourned."No one argued. Chairs scraped. Folders were gathered with shaking hands, and the directors filed out past the portrait of Nora's father without a word, Tench last of all, not looking at anyone. Somewhere in the confusion the Danforth lawyer slipped out as well. Jonah heard the door close behind him and his quick footsteps in the corridor. Then there were only three of them in the long room.Pike laid his hand flat on the ledger. When he spoke, he sounded like a man reading a lease aloud to a tenant."A debt may be paid by another," he said. "That is a courtesy the House allows. But it is allowed only with the House's consent, and Mr. Pruitt, you never asked for it.""I didn't know I had to," Jonah said."Ignorance is not a currency. We do not accept it either." Pike's tone did not change. "The payment you made will be audited tonight, a

Chapter: Chapter eight: The Man With No Debts
On Monday morning, the boardroom at Kessler Hall smelled of coffee and floor polish. A long walnut table ran down the middle of the room. Behind the chair at its head hung a portrait of Nora's father, painted in oils, his hands folded over the head of a cane. He had built a fleet from a single tugboat, and he looked like he knew it.Seven directors sat in leather chairs with their folders squared in front of them. Today they would vote on Danforth Marine's offer for the company. At the foot of the table sat the Danforth family lawyer, a precise man in a navy suit with a silver pen. He had come to watch the vote go the right way.Across the city, the parole office had opened its doors at nine without Jonah. He had decided the board would come first. He stood at Nora's shoulder in his canvas work jacket, among all that wool and silk. A few directors had already glanced at him and looked away. He felt every eye like a cold coin pressed to his skin. Six years in Crane Hill had taught him

Chapter: Chapter seven: Costumes
Miriam dropped Jonah at the Kessler dockyard a little after nine. Nora was waiting at the gate in a work coat. She led him up an iron staircase to a small room over the harbor office, the kind she kept for visiting captains. A narrow bed, a dresser, and a window full of cranes. She set the brown carton on the dresser herself and squared it against the wall. Neither of them said anything about it.Jonah asked for an hour alone with the yard. Nora gave it to him without asking why.He stood between two stacks of shipping containers, where the wind off the water could not reach, and looked down at the men at work. A crane operator high in his cab. A woman with a clipboard. Threads ran between all of them, gold and ordinary. A borrowed fifty. A shift traded for a favor. He picked out one thin cord running from a stevedore to a deckhand and reached for it with the stick. His fingers passed through it. Nothing took hold. The stick lay cool and silent in his hand.So that was the first rule.

Chapter: Chapter six: Unclaimed
On Sunday morning, the county records annex was a low gray building behind the courthouse, with a flagpole and no flag and a parking lot that held three cars.Miriam Osei had called in a favor to get it opened. She was a small, composed woman in a charcoal coat, and she walked beside Jonah as if she had been born in front of a judge. In the car, she had told him what she needed from him. His release papers, his signature, and as few words as possible. She had also photographed every page of every letter before they arrived. Nora's deckhand had found the shoebox under a bench at the pier and brought it to the clinic. Jonah carried it under his arm now. He had not looked inside since the stairwell.Fluorescent lights buzzed over a long counter. A clerk with a lanyard and a tired face took Miriam's papers, typed for a minute, and frowned at his screen."Pruitt, Ruth. That's in deep storage. Give me a few minutes."He disappeared between rows of shelves stacked with numbered boxes. Jonah

Chapter: Chapter five: Pay In Kind
By morning, gray light lay across the clinic bed, and a man stood by the door who did not trust a word Jonah said.Nora's head of security was broad through the shoulders, with a gray crew cut and a face that had decided to dislike Jonah before it entered the room. He listened with his arms crossed while Nora told him everything. The clock. The three days. The way Jonah had read her hand like a bill. When she finished, he did not look at her. He looked at Jonah."Last night this man was dead," he said. "This morning he knows your private business. Miss Kessler, that isn't a miracle. That's a setup.""I'm only telling you what he said.""He's a parolee who went into the water at the Danforth pier. Whose party do you think sent him?" The chief jerked his head toward the corridor. "Let me walk him off the property. I'll put him in a cab myself."Jonah sat up slowly against the pillow. "Ask me something."The chief's eyes narrowed. "Like what?""Anything she hasn't told you."The chief ga
