The System Hunted Me,So I Became It's Nightmare

The System Hunted Me,So I Became It's Nightmare

Seven years ago, a blue screen appeared before every human on Earth and promised a new beginning. Within a day, millions were dead. Now everyone has a System: a level, a rank, a worth measured in numbers. Everyone except Kael Draven. No level. No skills. No place in a world that treats the powerless as disposable. He has survived seven years in the ruins of New York by noticing what others miss, and he is still searching for the little sister who vanished the night his parents died. Then his team abandons him inside a dungeon that was never supposed to wake up. Kael studies the monster hunting him, finds the one thing it fears, and lives. And as it falls, the System flashes a message it was never meant to show: [WARNING: DO NOT ALLOW SUBJECT TO ACCESS THE CORE.] Why would the most powerful force on Earth be afraid of a man it cannot even see? Before he can find out, he touches a black relic older than the System itself, and every awakened user for miles loses their powers for three terrifying seconds. By morning, he is the most wanted man in Ironhaven. But Kael is done being the hunted. With a disgraced commander, a runaway scientist, and a loyal giant who owes him his life, he starts pulling at a conspiracy buried in the night his family was murdered. Every lie he exposes makes him more dangerous. Every rule he breaks makes the System more afraid. Everyone else grows stronger by obeying the System. Kael grows stronger by finding where it breaks. It named him humanity's greatest threat. It has no idea what it just created.

Chapter: CHAPTER 6
Kael did not decide to step out of the alcove so much as he noticed that his feet had already carried him there, and by the time the two guards turned their heads he had pulled the cap low over his eyes, straightened his borrowed gray coat, and fixed his face into the flat, tired expression of a man who had been awake for thirty hours and resented every minute of it. "Hold her there," he said, in the bored drawl he had used on the guard upstairs, and he walked straight toward them with a cart handle he had snatched from the supply cabinet as though it were a clipboard he had every right to carry. "The senior researcher wants this one moved to Observation Four before integration. The console in this wing keeps failing after the blackout, and she is not going to lose a twentieth subject to a power fault because somebody was too lazy to walk down the hall."The taller of the two guards frowned and glanced at the researcher with the tablet, who shrugged and said that the order had not com

Chapter: CHAPTER 5
Kael made up his mind the way he made up most of his decisions, which was all at once and without any real certainty that it was a good one, and by the time the black truck rolled out of the depot with its taillights smearing red through the smoke he was already running along the edge of the rooftop with his bag banging against his hip. The vehicle slowed at the first corner to let a patrol cross, and he leapt from the roof onto the top of a stack of rusted shipping crates, then dropped to the street, slid across the wet asphalt on his heels, and caught the rear bumper with both hands just as the driver pressed the accelerator. His stitched arm screamed at him when the truck lurched forward, and for a few seconds he simply hung there with his boots dragging over the road, nearly blinded by exhaust, until he managed to hook one leg over a steel bracket beneath the chassis and haul himself into the narrow gap above the rear axle, where the hot metal burned through his jacket and the noi

Chapter: CHAPTER 4
For a heartbeat nobody in the Black Market moved, and then the whole tunnel erupted at once, with merchants sweeping their goods into sacks, buyers shoving each other toward the exits, and a woman near the far platform screaming a child's name into the crush of bodies. Kael felt Nyra's fingers close around his sleeve with surprising strength. "Not the stairs," she said, pulling him toward the shadow behind Pell's stall. "They'll have sealed both ends by now, and the second those soldiers get close enough, Voss will use his ability on everyone in the tunnel.""His ability?" Kael asked, already wrapping the black object in a rag and sliding it back into the lining of his jacket."He suppresses System powers in a wide radius," she said, glancing over her shoulder with her face gone pale in the lantern light. "Anyone with a skill will feel it drain out of them like water through a cracked bowl, and the soldiers wear dampening gear so they're immune. It's how he has kept this city under hi

Chapter: CHAPTER 3
Kael left the tenement through the window, because the front stairs were already filling with the heavy boots of enforcement officers going door to door, and he dropped onto the sagging awning of the noodle stall below with his bag over one shoulder and the black object pressed against his chest. The awning tore under his weight and dumped him into a puddle of dishwater, which earned him a furious shout from the stall owner and one very long second of terror, but nobody in the Gutter looked twice at a man covered in filth running away from trouble, because half the district ran from trouble on any ordinary night. He pulled his hood low, took the narrowest alley he knew, and followed it downhill toward the only place in Ironhaven where a man with no System and something unexplainable in his jacket could hope to find a buyer before sunrise. The Black Market had no sign and no fixed address, only a rusted maintenance hatch behind a butcher's yard that opened onto a long concrete stairway

Chapter: CHAPTER 2
The collapse chased Kael through the last forty meters of the facility like a living thing, with slabs of ceiling slamming down behind his heels and a roaring cloud of concrete dust swallowing the corridor whole, and he threw himself into the ventilation shaft on the east wall without any plan beyond getting his body through a space that was barely wide enough for his shoulders. The metal tore his jacket and scraped the skin from his elbows while he hauled himself forward on his forearms, the black object digging into his ribs through the lining of his coat, and when the shaft finally spat him out into a crumbling stairwell choked with smoke, he climbed the last flight on legs that no longer felt like they belonged to him and came out into the gray light of a ruined street just as the entire building folded in on itself behind him with a sound like the world clearing its throat. He lay on his back in the rubble and breathed, a long, ragged, grateful breath that tasted of dust and old

Chapter: CHAPTER 1
The emergency lights turned red while Kael Draven was still stuffing antibiotics into his jacket, and the whole underground corridor began to pulse like an open wound, which was how he knew the easy job he had been promised was a lie.Dorian, the team leader, was staring at something Kael could not see, a floating blue panel that every other person on Earth could read and that had never once appeared in front of him in seven years. The color drained from Dorian's broad face as he read it, and when he finally spoke his voice cracked down the middle. "Dungeon awakening, Rank C, and the whole level seals in ninety seconds, so everybody move right now." Kael was already running with them, hugging the wall and counting the doors the way he always did, because he had learned in the first week of the apocalypse that the people who reached a narrow exit first were the only ones who lived to complain about it.He reached the bottom of the stairwell just as Dorian turned to count heads, and the
