CHAPTER 14
The nineteen bodies came across the frost like a single animal with nineteen sets of legs, and Kael had exactly enough time to haul Sana to her feet and shove her behind him before Darius's voice cracked across the plain with the full weight of twenty years of command. "Hold the line on my count and nobody breaks it," he shouted, and Kael realized with a strange jolt that the man who had been slouching over a bottle in a corner booth only hours ago had vanished completely, replaced by a commander who sounded as though he had never once doubted that he would be obeyed. "They move on a shared beat, so listen for it, because every step lands together and every head turns together, and whoever is steering them cannot adjust faster than the formation can follow. Bram, wait until the front rank plants its left foot and then sweep their legs, not their ribs, and put them on the ground without breaking anything, because I want every one of those people able to stand up afterward."Bram answer
CHAPTER 13
Nobody moved for the length of one frozen breath, and in that stillness Kael heard the details he would later wish he could forget: the soft, uneven shuffle of bare feet on frost, the faint electric whine coming from the metal bands clamped around twenty skulls, and the small, awful silence where twenty people should have been breathing hard from the long walk across the plain. They were not breathing hard at all. They walked with their heads tilted at exactly the same angle and their blue eyes fixed on the same point, which was Kael's chest, and the heavy woman in the flour-dusted apron who had once pressed warm bread heels into his hands without a word came on at the front with her mouth slightly open and nothing living in her face."Do not hurt them," Kael said, and was surprised by how steady his own voice sounded. "Bram, I mean it, whatever happens, you do not swing that hammer at anyone wearing a band, because every one of them is somebody we saw on Nyra's wall, and they are onl
CHAPTER 12
The boom that rolled through the tunnel behind them was followed by a second one closer, and then a long grinding rumble that Kael felt in the soles of his boots, the unmistakable sound of heavy steel shutters dropping into place one after another along the old supply route. Darius was already moving, shoving his empty pistol into his belt and snatching the dead lantern from the floor as though it were the last useful thing in the world. "They are sealing the sections from the tavern end, which means we have about four minutes before the walls on both sides of us close, and if we are still in this pump station when that happens, the Directorate can simply flood the tunnel and wait." He pointed toward a low iron door on the far side of the chamber with a fading red arrow painted above it. "That leads to the outer wall, and I am praying that the Directorate was too lazy to check the one section I never put on any map."They ran in a tight line, Darius first with his shoulders hunched un
CHAPTER 11
Kael had spent most of his life being underestimated, and he had learned that the best way to use it was to look at a threat for exactly as long as it took to understand it, so while Bram Holt lifted that enormous hammer off his shoulder and Darius cursed and reached for his pistol, he simply stood there and watched the man's feet. The giant's stance was wide and rooted, with his weight settled low and his left shoulder angled slightly forward as though he expected to be struck before he struck anything himself, and that was not the stance of someone who hunted people for a living. It was the stance of someone who had spent years standing in front of other people and taking whatever came."Wait," Kael said, and he raised both empty hands. "You have a defensive ability, don't you? Something that soaks up damage and gives it back as strength, which is why you wait for the other person to swing first. The hammer is only there to finish what your body already started."The hammer stopped
CHAPTER 10
Kael did not raise his hands, because in seven years he had learned that a frightened man with a gun only needed a reason to pull the trigger, and the surest way to give him one was to look like you were afraid of it. He stood very still in the middle of the tavern, with the noise of the room dying around him and a stranger's pistol pointed at his heart, and he told the truth in the flattest voice he owned. "I found it yesterday in a dungeon under the Northern Medical Ruins, in a round black room that should not have been there, and the moment I touched it every System user within kilometers lost their powers for three seconds. I do not have a System, I do not have a level, and I do not have any idea what it is, which is why I have spent the whole night running from people who seem to know a great deal more than I do."Darius stared at him for a long, ugly moment, and the pistol did not waver, though something shifted behind his eyes that looked almost like grief. "No System," he repe
CHAPTER 9
Kael kicked the blue door off its hinges instead of unlocking it, because the lock would have cost them four seconds they did not have, and the two of them burst out into the frozen lane just as the first drone swung around the corner of the water tower and flooded the street with white light. The beam passed over his shoulder and swept on across a wall of cracked brick, and in the second it took the machine to correct its aim he caught Nyra's wrist and dragged her toward the fire escape of the collapsed apartment block next door, a rusted iron ladder that groaned and shed flakes of paint under their boots as they climbed. By the time they reached the roof the entire sky above Sector Nine had filled with the thin, whining hum of rotors, and Kael understood from the way the lights fanned out in a careful half circle that the drones were not hunting them so much as herding them toward the river. He did not argue with the shape of the trap, because he had learned a long time ago that the
