Chapter 1: Bottom Rung
Ethan Cross had stopped noticing the rain. He pulled his jacket tighter and checked the delivery tablet clipped to his handlebars. Two packages left. Forty minutes. If he made it in thirty-five, the tip bonus still counted.
A siren wailed somewhere north, toward the Tower district. Ethan didn't flinch. Sirens there meant a hunter showing off, or a drill. Sirens in the Lower Blocks meant someone hadn't paid rent. He kicked his bike into gear and pushed through the crowd under the transit awning. Most of them were watching a broadcast screen … a woman with a spear made of light, smiling for the cameras. RANK-8 HUNTER SIGNS WITH BLACK TOWER GUILD. STARTING SALARY: UNDISCLOSED. An old man near the edge of the crowd muttered, "Undisclosed. Sure. More than I'll see in ten years." Nobody answered him. Nobody needed to. That was Eclipse City, if you drew it plain: awakened on top, powerless on the bottom, and nothing in between except the hope your name might get called someday. Ethan had stopped hoping around the same year he'd stopped growing taller. Hope didn't pay rent either. He checked the tablet. First package: a courthouse filing, three blocks over, due before the office closed. He merged into traffic, cutting past a delivery drone that beeped at him. At a red light, another rider pulled up beside him … Danny, from the same dispatch pool, soaked just as badly. "You catch the priority board today?" Danny asked. "Not yet. Why?" "Something's got everyone jumpy. Rates doubled on half the Hunter District jobs an hour ago." Danny shook water off his hood. "Nobody wants to say why." "Rates doubling usually means somebody upstairs is scared." "Or somebody's about to get rich." Danny grinned, then the light changed and he was gone, weaving south. Ethan filed it away and kept moving. Rumors didn't pay rent either. At the courthouse steps, a guard with a faint shimmer around his knuckles … some minor strength enhancement, unregistered, unremarkable … looked him up and down before taking the envelope. "You're soaked," the guard said. "Rain does that." "Awakened riders get covered lanes, you know." "I noticed." Ethan was already back on his bike before the guard could say anything else. He liked the math better than the conversation. Distance, time, weight … none of it cared whether you'd been born with something extra humming under your skin. A powerless man who understood the math could out-earn a lazy awakened one, some weeks. Not often. But some. The second delivery took him past the edge of the Hunter District. A recruitment office glowed gold through the rain, its banner rotating overhead: ARE YOU AWAKENED? FIND OUT WHERE YOU STAND. Ethan had walked into an office like that once. They'd drawn one vial of blood, run it through a scanner for six seconds, and handed him a slip that said, in small grey letters: NO ABILITY DETECTED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST. He still had the slip. He wasn't sure why. Maybe so he'd never let himself forget the exact number they'd measured him at: zero. A kid pressed his face to the glass, watching a hologram of some awakened teenager summon a wall of ice. His sister tugged his sleeve, telling him they'd be late. He went, but he kept looking back the whole way down the block. Ethan understood that look better than he wanted to. He dropped the second package at a pawnshop under an overpass. The owner signed without looking up. Behind him sat a locked case: a cracked ability crystal, a stolen hunter badge, a burned notebook nobody had wanted. Powerless people didn't get to dream about what was behind that glass. They got to deliver the paperwork that kept the rest of the city running. His tablet buzzed. Route complete. Thirty-two minutes. Bonus earned. For a second, under the overpass, Ethan let himself feel something close to satisfaction. Small. Quiet. His. Nobody could scan that out of him. Then the tablet buzzed again … sharper this time, the tone reserved for priority jobs. He thumbed it open. A new listing sat flagged in red at the top of his queue. The pay rate made him stop breathing for half a second: triple his usual rate, plus a hazard bonus bigger than anything he'd earned in three months combined. PICKUP: SUPPLY DEPOT, OUTER RING. DROP-OFF: HUNTER DISTRICT … RESTRICTED ZONE 4. WARNING: ACTIVE CONTAINMENT PROTOCOLS IN EFFECT. RIDER ASSUMES ALL RISK. He read it twice. Restricted Zone 4 didn't open for civilian traffic unless something inside had already gone wrong … or was about to. That explained Danny's doubled rates. That explained the jumpy dispatch board. He called it in before he could talk himself out of it. "This Zone 4 job. Is it real?" The dispatcher's voice came back flat, tired. "It's real. Guild cleared it an hour ago. Containment's still active, but they need supplies moved and nobody awakened wants to waste rank points on a courier run." "So they're paying triple to send someone who can't say no." "They're paying triple to send someone who needs the money." A pause. "You in or not? Line's backing up." Ethan looked at his account balance, glowing faint and small in the corner of the tablet. Rent was due in six days. His savings covered maybe two of them. "Give me a minute." "Minute's all you get. Line's backing up." The dispatcher's voice dropped, almost gentler. "Your call, kid. Just don't say nobody warned you." The line went dead. Every instinct built over twenty-five years on the bottom rung told him to swipe it away and take the next job waiting behind it. Every number on that screen told him this one delivery would cover his rent for two months, maybe three if he was careful. He thought about the slip in his drawer. Zero. He thought about the guard's covered lane, the kid's face against the glass, the old man's voice under the awning. More than I'll see in ten years. Twenty-five years of being careful had gotten him a dry pair of socks on a good week and nothing else. Careful didn't get you out of the Lower Blocks. Careful just kept you alive long enough to stay in them. He stood there, thumb hovering, rain finding its way down the back of his collar, and felt the old itch he'd never quite managed to kill … the one that whispered maybe this time is different. His thumb came down. Accepted. The tablet chimed once, cheerful and indifferent, already routing him into the one part of Eclipse City where powerless men like him were never supposed to go.Expand

The System That Hates Its Owner Chapter 11: The Cost of Strength
Ethan sat with his phone in his hand for a long time, and eventually just turned the screen off and set it face-down on the mattress like that would stop whoever was watching from watching. It didn't feel like it worked. Nothing tonight had felt like anything worked.Sleep, when it finally came, lasted less than it should have and ended the way most things had started ending lately … with a notification.[NEW MISSION AVAILABLE.] [TARGET: LOW-TIER MONSTER DEN, LOWER BLOCKS SECTOR 7.] [REWARD: ENHANCED STRENGTH.] [TIME LIMIT: NONE.]No time limit. Ethan read that part twice, waiting for the trick. Every mission so far had come with a countdown, a threat, a leash pulled tight enough to feel. This one just sat there, patient, almost polite."What's the catch," he said out loud, to a ceiling that didn't answer. He got up anyway. Not because the system had forced him … his arm stayed his own this time, his legs answered to him and no one else … but because refusing had already cost him a ni

The System That Hates Its Owner Chapter 10: On Record
Ethan made it four blocks from the sparring yard before his legs decided they were done negotiating. He sat down hard on a bus bench that had seen better decades, the case-shaped ache in his side pulsing in time with his heartbeat, and let himself just breathe for a minute. No notifications. No countdown. For the first time since the monster's claw had found him, the corner of his vision was simply empty. He didn't trust it. Empty had a way of not staying empty. His tablet buzzed … the personal line, not dispatch. Danny.*Heard you're not showing up for your shift tomorrow. You okay, what happened?*Ethan stared at the message for a long moment, trying to figure out which part of the last several hours he could possibly explain in a text. A voice in my head made me fight a stranger and it worked, wasn't going to land the way he needed it to.*Long night*, he typed instead. *I'm fine. Explain later.**You keep saying that.**I keep meaning it.*He pocketed the phone before Danny could

The System That Hates Its Owner Chapter 9: Contact
"Rules are simple," the stranger said, rolling his neck like this was a formality he'd rather skip. "First one down stays down. Guild doesn't cover hospital bills for sparring accidents, so try not to need one.""Nobody's covering mine either way," Ethan said. "I'm not registered."That got a reaction … a flicker of something behind the man's eyes, surprise wearing the shape of contempt. "You're joking.""I wish.""They sent me an unregistered nobody." The stranger's shimmer brightened along his knuckles, blue-white light gathering there like a static building before a storm. "This is going to be embarrassing for both of us.""For one of us," Ethan said, and didn't wait for a rebuttal. He came in low, the way he'd watched a hundred hunters do it in a hundred saved clips, weight forward, aiming for the same mistake he'd catalogued in his notebooks a dozen times over … the half-second where an awakened fighter, confident in their ability, forgot their footwork mattered too.The stranger

The System That Hates Its Owner Chapter 8: Six Hours
The paramedics arrived four minutes too late to matter and just in time to be useful anyway.Ethan sat against the scaffolding while a medic pressed something cold and chemical against his side, Lily wrapped in a foil blanket a few feet away, already being fussed over by a second responder who kept asking her questions she was too shaken to answer. The hunter … Ethan still didn't know his name … stood over both of them like he wasn't sure whether to thank Ethan or arrest him.A containment tech pulled the reinforced case off Ethan's back before he'd even finished sitting down, running a scanner over its seals with the kind of urgency that suggested this wasn't routine. It beeped clean. "Not cracked," the tech said, sounding more relieved than professional. "You're lucky. Guild's going to want a full report on why a civilian courier was hauling this through an active breach, but that's tomorrow's problem." He carried it off into the dark without waiting for an answer, and just like tha
