CHAPTER 221
Before heading back to the compound, Sylvester decided to look for the clone one last time, making use of Liliana's team and equipments but it was he didn't appear anywhere. Almost like he knew where all the cameras were and their blinds spots. The only time he was spotted was at the mansion. “I'm heading out.” he told Liliana after two days of futile scrutiny of the CCTV footages. “Where to? Your estate?” she asked curiously. The thought had occurred to him to go back and ask the staff once more but he had thrown away the idea. The staff were traumatized enough. He didn't want to give them a reminder. They weren't ready yet to look at his face comfortably. He shook his head. “No. Just check some places around town. Maybe someone would have seen my evil twin. I will be back.” Before leaving he contacted Gerald and told him he was coming now, there was something he had to take care of. “Hold down the fort a bit longer.” he directed. He disguised himself again, this time as a to
CHAPTER 222
Sylvester acted on a whim, stopping by the inn once more on his way back to the clan. “You never came back, baby. You kept me waiting.” the female bartender of last time said to him with a reproachful look. Sylvester felt like throwing up with the way she was batting her eyelids flirtatiously at him but he managed to keep his expression neutral. “I've been busy.” he replied simply with a smile. She waved his statement off, giggling like a little girl. “Never mind that. Because you have got a cute face and know how to treat a woman, I forgive you…So what can I do for you?” Sylvester mentally gagged as she increased her level of flirtation. Surely, she wasn't expecting him to hop in the sack with someone like her. “Coffee and medium rare steak hamburger.” he ordered. She batted her eyes at him again before going in to get his order. Sylvester froze, his whole body going rigid. Someone was observing him. Discreetly he closed his eyes and released his essence, using his mind eye
CHAPTER 223
Sylvester didn’t wait to hear his captive’s pleas for mercy. The moment Gerald’s number failed to connect, a cold certainty filled him and he hardened, seeing red. He kept the phone in his own pocket and turned the man around, glaring into his face. He doubted there was anything more he could get out from the man. He didn't want to kill him but he couldn't forgive him for accepting the job to kill his wife. That was his sin. With one swift, deft twist of his wrist, speedily executed before he could change his mind, Sylvester snapped the man’s neck. The body slumped to the ground like a discarded cloak, lifeless eyes staring up at the sliver of moonlight slipping into the alley. Sylvester didn’t hesitate, killing off his emotions. He stepped over the corpse and emerged into the quiet street. An ominous feeling settled in him. Sylvester tried to calm himself but he couldn't shake it off. There was denying that the clan was in danger. I need a car. Sylvester broke into a run, d
CHAPTER 224
Sylvester didn’t allow himself rest for even a moment, pushing forward once his boots landed on familiar soil, weaving through the narrow inner corridors of the stronghold’s forested interior. His target first and foremost was to locate Gerald but suddenly he stopped running. A troublesome thought arrested his movement. Those clones trying to destroy the barrier were strong. Almost as strong as him. And they were many. He looked up at the barrier, noting the numerous cracks in it. Even if the barrier held for another hour, the moment it fell, the clan would be fighting an army built to overwhelm. A direct confrontation would cost lives. Too many. There has to be something I can do. Another thought occurred to him. If I can’t stop them from coming, I can at least weaken their forces before they get in. He turned, glancing over his shoulder toward the almost invisible seam he had slipped through. The barrier was breaking apart. Once the barrier collapsed fully, the man-made so
CHAPTER 225
Sylvester kept it up, pretending to be part of the army while discreetly reducing their numbers from within their ranks every night. The constant disappearance of their kind increased the discord within the enemy ranks, and their confusion grew to the point where they started attacking themselves. “Enough!” Sylvester's clone bellowed out, and the clones froze, all eyes snapping toward it. He walked among his men, his sharp eyes carefully scanning the faces before him, trying to pick out the culprit. When he got close to Sylvester, Sylvester slipped forward to the row he had already scanned, thereby evading a possible exposure. The clone, satisfied that there was no one among them who he didn’t know, issued new orders. “Tonight, no one is going on standby mode. Tonight, we stay awake to catch the culprit. Anyone found on standby will be terminated,” he ordered, and his soldiers shouted their responses. The moment they broke formation, Sylvester exhaled quietly. The soldiers were
CHAPTER 226
Sylvester waited till the last group of clones crossed the far side of the camp before he slipped into the narrow space between two supply tents. If he was going to reach Gerald, now was the time but there was one challenge; wearing the second-in-command’s face had been easy enough but acting like him proved to be far more difficult than he had expected. That didn't dampen his determination and he had to hurry up. He was running out of time. His clone was now overly suspicious of everyone and paranoid now. Every little thing that moved was now a threat in his eyes. His suspicion seeped into the air, corrupting it and making it almost impossible for Sylvester to take a single step without worrying that he would be found out by the patrols. Besides that, there was a bigger problem. His clone somehow felt something wasn't right with the second in command. The look he had given Sylvester when he met him made it clear he suspected there was some foul play in the works. Sylvester
CHAPTER 227
Before dawn, Sylvester was back in the camp and in the second in command tent. By some strike of luck, he had somehow evaded his clone within the woods and maneuvered his way around the search group and back to the camp. Then he had an idea. He needed a diversion and even though he had one already, he wanted to increase the scale it. The bigger the better. Acting on his idea, he killed the night patrol, swift and silently without much resistance. None of them had expected an attack from within the ranks, let alone from the man they knew as their second in command. The shocked expression on their faces as he moved at lightening speed and stabbed them at their various posts made him feel dirty and guilty. But he pushed the feelings aside. He couldn't afford such feelings now. Besides they weren’t humans. By the time the first sliver of morning sun crept across the camp, Sylvester was standing at attention among the assembled soldiers, innocent until found guilty. His fake pa
CHAPTER 228
His clone had taken the bait. Sylvester realized it the moment he saw the clone storming toward the treeline alone, jaw clenched, aura crackling like black lightning around him, out of control. Exactly as Sylvester expected, even better. He had expected the clone to see him as the biggest suspect but it was the clear the clone was casting his gaze somewhere else, away from Sylvester. Sylvester followed the clone then hid behind a cluster of boulders, watching as his fake searched the woods on his own, his eyes having a crazed look. His entire body was tensed, as if he expected the intruder to jump him any minute. Sylvester nodded in approval, liking how well things were progressing. That's right… let paranoia be your drive. Sylvester slipped silently from his hiding place and followed, carefully keeping a safe distance between them. The forest was quiet and calm, giving a false sense of peace but Sylvester knew better. It was a lie… couldn't be real, not when there
CHAPTER 229
Sylvester didn't allow himself wallow in misery, springing into action.… fear was not something he cared to entertain, now or ever. Not when lives depended on him. He stripped the clone of its uniform and wore it on himself, trying his best to arrange his hair the way clones did. There was no need for using the face of the second in command again. He was simply going to keep his and act as the commander for now. And it would help him buy time to come up with a plan… one that would enable him to send word to Gerald about the new development. Sylvester rejoined the clones as their commander, his expression stoic. Now he needed to act like their leader. “Form up!” he shouted. “Stay alert! Prepare to evacuate the perimeter!” The soldiers scrambled about never suspecting anything, some running to grab their weapons and other gears, others getting nervously into formation. Thanks to their activities no one noticed the way Sylvester’s fingers trembled as he barked orders. He fi
CHAPTER 230
Emily’s days at her mother's home were anything but peaceful. While she delegated Cullen to work with Gladys in the running of the company, she moped around, on edge and anxious, her thoughts constantly turning to Sylvester. She had initially thought the marble and glass mansion tucked safely in the woods would be just the safe haven she needed but she always had the unsettling thought that the fake Sylvester would get to her… and her baby. Worst still, she hasn't heard from her husband and all types of gruesome images plagued her mind. Katrina on the other hand part did her best to settle Emily's fear, constantly reminding her they were well hidden and also to trust Sylvester. He was a grandmaster after all but Katrina's words didn't help one bit. She paced around more than she sat, almost like a caged animal used to being free. She jumped at every sound and every creak of the floor boards or doors sounded like a bell announcing doomsday. At such times, her hands would inst
