CHAPTER 231
Emily was up before anyone else, already stuffing clothing into a duffel bag her mother lent her. Her hands trembled slightly as she folded the last of her clothes into the bag. She had barely slept after her nightmare. Now that it was morning, she felt an urgency deep in her bones, a certainty that Sylvester needed her. If she had been having second thoughts before, now she was sure of what her next move should be and no one could dissuade her. A knock sounded on her door as she zipped the bag close and keyed in the security lock. “Who's there?” she asked, looking up. The door slid open and Cullen rolled his wheel chair in, his eyes settling on the bag immediately. “You’re really going through with this, huh?” he asked, his voice cracking a bit with emotion. Emily didn’t look his way at first probably because she was scared her façade will falter if she saw the emotions on his face. She plucked the bag off the bed and planted it beside her foot then she sighed and turned a
CHAPTER 232
Emily had just made it past the front steps when she felt a cold awareness, the hairs at the back of her neck standing on end. She stopped in her tracks. Someone was watching them. Katrina had felt it too, her posture stiffening and her hand subtly drifting toward the concealed pistol at her thigh. “Em…” she whispered at Emily. “I know.” Emily’s fingers tightened around the strap of the duffel bag. “I feel it too.” As they watched, three shapes separated from the shadows around the front gates, the motion lights behind them making their silhouettes seem taller. The three shapes turned out to be men clad entirely in black and faces masked. They each held a wicked looking blade in their clasp. Emily’s heart thumped frantically. They had known where she was all along. She took one instinctive step back towards the steps, automatically shielding her abdomen with her luggage as Katrina stepped right in front in front of her, her pistol aiming at the three men and gleaming
CHAPTER 233
“We have got to save her… she's going to bleed out if we don't do something.” Emily cried out, trying to crawl towards the still bleeding and unconscious Katrina, not caring if they were still under attack. Isabella caught the hem of her dress restraining her. “No…let go! Let me go!” Emily's voice was raw as she protested, desperate to reach her friend but Isabella's hold on her was firm. “Emily, stop! They are still out there waiting for us.!” Finally Emily was free, the gown tearing off at the hem. She scrambled to Katrina's side, tears falling down her cheeks in torrents. “Katrina… please,” Emily whispered as she reached Katrina, her sobs loud and uncontrolled. Katrina’s eyes fluttered opened weakly, her chest rising in shallow, uneven pulls. Her fingers twitched as if she was trying to fold them but they wouldn't respond. Emily’s heart broke at the sight of the strong lady she had known reduced to a shell of herself. Out of the corner of her eye she sighted some of t
CHAPTER 234
Sylvester summarized everything he had to do within the enemy ranks to Gerald, pointing out the weak points he noted out while amongst them. He also emphasized how strong the clone soldiers were, his clone in particular. “I doubt he is dead so if you encounter him before I do, be careful or run once you conclude you can’t win.” Sylvester warned Gerald. Gerald let out a low whistle and rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “Those things… are they really that strong?” Sylvester nodded. “Whatever power is inside that creature, it’s evolving. Getting sharper. And it’s angry. It's almost like it keeps growing and getting stronger whenever it faces a life threatening occurrence.” Otto looked between the two men, the muscles in his jaws jumping. “They are killing machines then. They will keep coming until they wipe out anything connected to you.” Sylvester lowered himself onto a felled log, exhaustion momentarily breaking through his tough exterior. His muscles still trembled
CHAPTER 235
Early the next morning, Sylvester was busy rallying the troops and his students who were willing to march out to battle. He could sense the fear they felt at the prospect of fighting an enemy more powerful and ruthless but at the same time he saw the eagerness to protect what was sacred to them. The truck of fuel and gunpowder Gerald and Otto had managed to hijack from the enemy’s supply line now sat behind them, ready to be used. The men had worked tirelessly throughout the night, with soot streaking their faces and sweat running down their necks, shaping those stolen materials into explosives powerful enough to cripple a chunk of the enemy’s force. It wasn’t elegant. It wasn’t perfect but it was lethal enough to do the work. He looked over at the team in charge of the explosives. “Handle them like you would an egg.,” Sylvester warned, his voice low but carrying weight. “Yes, Grandmaster,” they chorused. The rest of his troops gathered in loose lines nearby, checking we
Chapter 236
Emily slowly came to life, like someone finally emerging out of the depth of sea. Her eyelids twitched but refused to open at first. Her head felt heavy, too heavy, and her arm pulsed with a dull, dragging ache. She frowned as her body vibrated softly, a rumbling sound filling her ears. She was in a vehicle…and it was moving at high speed. Her chest tightened instantly and panic consumed her mind. I've been kidnapped… She started struggling in her lying position and immediately regretted it as hot pain spread through her arm. She winced as she remembered a bullet had torn it earlier. Even though it was bandaged now, it was still bleeding, soaking the bandage. She managed to get up to a sleeping position and looked around the interior of the vehicle. It looked like she was at the back of a van and it had curtains over the windows. Bile rose in her throat. If she was the only one here in the van, does that mean they killed the others after abducting her as the kill team ha
CHAPTER 237
The war was already playing out in full force as explosions rocked the compound but the enemy kept coming, not caring that their comrades were caught in the explosion. The valley shook beneath Sylvester’s feet as fire rolled upward in orange waves, licking at the sky and swallowing everything in its path. The bombs had done their job by reducing the enemy numbers but it wasn’t nearly enough to stop them. The army of clones didn't even show any signs of being affected at all. Worse still, they also had their own explosives, using them without hesitation. Soon the stronghold became a spot for explosions as both groups used bombs and other explosive materials to battle. The air turned thick with dust and smoke, coating tongues and lungs until every breath felt like swallowing heat. Men coughed, blinked through ash, and tightened their grips on their weapons, struggling despite their stinging eyes to shoot down the clones who managed to escape the explosions. “Focus!” Sylvester
CHAPTER 238
“What's that sound?” Isabella asked from the front seat as they drove towards the clan territory. Cullen frowned. “What sound? I don't hear anything.” Emily didn't say anything but she knew what her mother was talking about. She could hear the sounds of battle in the distance. Please God, let this be a trick of the wind…Emily prayed fervently even she knew it for what it was. It was worse than she expected, a full scale war greeting them as soon they were within reach of the compound. Smoke spiraled out towards the sky in multiple places and some vehicles had flames licking at them. Isabella hit the brakes, her mouth dropping open at the scene of chaos before them, unable to comprehend what was going on. “Em dear… are you sure we are in the right place?” Isabella asked her daughter uncertainly. Emily nodded absentmindedly, her eyes scanning the chaos before her. “Em… start talking. Whats going on?” Cullen asked looking back at Emily. “What exactly are we doing in an obvious w
CHAPTER 239
The battlefield grew fiercer still. Sylvester's fighters fought bravely, holding their own against the enemy but even that wasn't enough as the enemy kept pushing forward, being on the offensive. All around were screams and sounds of either guns going off or blades clashing. There were even those who could cultivate energy from the environment, using it in its most lethal form. The ground trembled beneath Sylvester’s feet as he struck down another attacker. He raised his head to scan for his clone but couldn't find it. While they were locked in battle earlier, a bomb had gone off mere feet from them and the explosion had flung them to opposite sides of each other and when they had recovered other opponents engaged them. Sadness and sorrow filled him as he saw his men dropping one by one beneath the onslaught. Their dying screams lingering in his mind, replaying itself over and over in his head even after they breathed their last. I did this. He thought sadly to himself. They h
CHAPTER 240
Emily couldn’t tell which sound reached her first; the thunderous crack of gunfire, the guttural screams of soldiers, or the ragged rasp of her own breath. Everything blended into a single roar as she wove through the chaotic clash of fighters. Men lunged at her from both sides, blades flashing, boots pounding the dirt. She ducked low, using the smoke as a shield, kicking off attackers when she could and sprinting whenever a narrow path opened. Her lungs burned, her arms ached, and every violent thud near her belly made her flinch protectively. She kept one arm instinctively curled around her abdomen as if her palm alone could shield the child growing inside her. There was no room for fear, only one thought repeating like a frantic prayer: Get to the gun. Get to the gun. She slid behind a toppled vehicle, her shoulder slamming into it hard. She winced, rubbing at the sting, then peeked around the edge. The machine gun was only thirty yards away now,, fed by an unending belt
