Chapter 287
287. It had been raining since dawn. Devin sat by the table, and Petra lay on the couch with a blanket draped over her legs and one hand resting protectively on her round belly. Devin kept stealing glances at her every few seconds. She looked extremely tired and her skin was paler. Pregnancy had changed her very much. Petra used to have a sharp tongue, but lately, she wasn't her usual spitfire self which he adored. Not that he could blame her, she was carrying life. There was a knock on the door, jolting Devin out of his thoughts. Petra slowly sat up. "That'll be her." Devin frowned. It was just then that he remembered that Petra's mother was visiting. "Are you sure about this? We've been trying to keep this place off the grid." "She's my mother, Devin." Petra said gently. "She's been calling nonstop. I couldn't ignore her forever. And besides, she's already here, so she knows." Devin sighed, wanting to say something, but Petra spoke immediately. "Don't worry, I'll h

288. “And today marks the grand unveiling of Eclipse City, the newest and most luxurious district in the nation, built right above the famous former industrial sinkhole site! This project was spearheaded by our beloved Gloria. In a recent report, she said that Eclipse City represents rebirth, and the promise of a better future for all.” “A better future my ass.” Devin muttered. Amanda looked up from the laptop across the room. “Are you okay?” He didn’t answer immediately. His eyes stayed on the TV, watching Gloria step up to the podium, cameras flashing around her. She looked every bit the queen of the empire she’d stolen. “We rise from the ashes and darkness of the old, my dears!” She said into the mic. “And together, we will now step into the light. Welcome to Eclipse City!” The crowd went wild. Devin felt sick. “She merged a lot of things.” Amanda said quietly. “Your companies, some of the Mayor’s shit, everything. She’s running the show now. I think she’s the on
Chapter 289
289. Devin sat alone in his study, looking like he was going to fall off and break apart. He hadn’t slept in days. He rubbed his eyes, staring at the files Ryan had sent to him, encrypted, scrambled, and routed through seven ghost servers. The kid had done well. He would be proud to sponsor his future. Devin clicked on a folder marked “PROJECT ECLIPSE” and then he came across videos, financial records, and photographs. He opened one clip, and there was a popular politician laughing at a dinner table while two security men dragged a young woman out of frame, screaming. Another file showed Gloria’s men loading sealed crates into trucks labeled “City Relief Fund”, but he had already seen what was in those trucks on another file. It wasn’t good nor medicine but bones. Human bones. He picked up the old phone on the table, dialed one of his contacts in the underground press. “Devin Stone?” The person asked in a hushed tone. “Yes, it’s me.” Devin said. “I’ve got something that’ll

290. It was yet another quiet night, and Devin sat alone on the couch in the dark with a half-empty glass of whiskey in his hand, watching the security feeds on the big wall screen out of nothing but boredom. He wasn’t interested in general entertainment, but he wanted to look at something. Outside it was raining heavily. Devin sighed. He still hadn’t told Dmitri about Ryan and he didn’t like bothering Petra with details like that in her condition. He muttered to himself. “The whole world has gone to shit." Suddenly, he heard a faint buzz from the feed which was silent before. One of the cameras glitched for a second. "Don't you fucking start.” He said to no one in particular, grabbing the remote and flipping through the channels. He went from room to room, checking to see if someone was merely moving about, but everywhere looked normal. Then suddenly, he saw a man standing outside. He froze. “Who the hell?” Then the face became clearer and Devin couldn’t believe it.
Chapter 291
291. Devin hadn’t really slept. He’d sat by the window for hours, and even though his eyes were heavy, his mind was moving too mad for him to rest. The events of last night had troubled him greatly, and before he knew it, it was dawn. He finally got up to get some coffee, only to head Amanda’s scream. “DEVIN! DEVIN, OH MY GOODNESS!” Devin immediately checked to see that Petra was still asleep before moving out gently. Then he ran down the house. He couldn’t grace where exactly her screams were coming from, but she met him halfway. Her hands were shaking violently, and all the colour had drained from her face. “What is going on? Petra is asleep!” Amanda shook her head, unable to say a word. She led him to Dmitri’s open room and pointed. Devin didn’t like these games but as soon as he looked in, he felt cold all over. Dmitri was sitting on the edge of the bed, and his head was slumped forward over his body, and his eyes were open but empty. There was a knife which he loosel
Chapter 292
292. "...and sometimes I just think that I could have had any other reality..." Petra sat by the window, a hand on her swollen belly, her face pale and exhausted. She had been barely six months along just a few weeks ago but now, she looked ready to give birth any minute. She was having an nice conversation with Amanda when she felt the pain. "Something's wrong." She whispered, placing a hand on her chest. Amanda got up immediately. "What is it?" She had been monitoring Petra almost nonstop since the past day. She felt bad for the poor woman, and didn't want her to feel alone during this stage. She also had some equipment on standby, and although she wasn't a doctor, she had worked with and against Devin and people like him long enough to have some knowledge of the arts. "I don't know, but I'm in pain." Petra stated, blowing out air. Amanda immediately got a device and placed it on her stomach before pulling out her small tablet. "It's not just your body reacting.
Chapter 293
293. Devin stood by his car, checking his watch. The satellite trace was running, the coordinates leading straight to the central district where Gloria’s grand project had risen over the ruins of the sinkhole. It was dark already, and he had been running on serotonin. All his meetings had gone well, and Petra had been stable since the last… event. Things would get better, he was sure of it. Devin got back into the car and fired up the engine. By the time he got near the Eclipse City, the place was alive with activity. Security drones hovered around quietly overhead, a lot of workers rushed around setting up massive digital billboards, holographic displays, cleaning, and generally putting things in order. Devin stopped to read a well-decorated banner: -ECLIPSE CITY GRAND OPENING! GLOBAL ENERGY ERA BEGINS TONIGHT! ARE YOU READYYY?- Devin stared at it for a moment, feeling like something was off. “Energy era, my ass.” He muttered. “You’re calling an enchantment session a celebra

294. They watched the crowd outside Eclipse City, and outside onlookers and general paparazzi, everyone looked expensive going in. Devin adjusted the cuff on his black suit, and the fake badge on his breast pocket reading Mr Treneir, Solaris Investments. Amanda stood next to him, wearing a dark gown that hugged her curves, and her hair was pinned up sleek and elegant. Devin felt like she looked like she belonged there while he looked like a man who was pretending poorly. It was a good thing that he had masking spells to hide their true faces. "Relax, you." She giggled. "You're sweating like you just robbed a bank." Two guards scanned their invitations, nodded politely, and waved them through. Inside, the place shone like a house of pure light. There were mirrored walls, marble floors, and holographic projections floating above the guests. He muttered under his breath, "Jesus Christ, it's like someone built one of those heaven-on-earth things." Amanda snorted leaning close

295. Cameras were still flashing as the Mayor stood on the stage. He held a hand out to Petra who took it immediately, and walked up the podium, smiling. "I would like to introduce this wonderful woman who has been adversely affected by who her partner is, and how he has become. Tonight, with her, we begin a new era! An era where energy and life become one!" Devin felt bile rise in his throat. Amanda stood beside him in the crowd, pretending to clap, whispering out of the corner of her mouth. "He's really going to do it, Devin. This is the real thing, we have to leave and look for the back source." Devin's jaw clenched. "No, not yet." "Don't act impulsively!" She hissed. "You'll blow our cover and we can't afford to do that yet." He wasn't listening to her. His blood was boiling, and the only person in his line of sight was Petra. The trance had deepened, and she wasn't even blinking or moving anymore, just standing like a porcelain doll while the Mayor lifted his

296. "MARK!" Shots sounded throughout the place that it sounded like a war zone. Devin stood in place as the bullets flew at him bounced off his invisible force field. The attackers continued to shoot until they saw that their bullets weren't working. "Abort! Abort!" The leader yelled. "It's useless. Aim for the lady!" One of the guards lowered his gun for a bit and turned to the leader. "But she's pregnant!" "I said shoot!" Devin didn't wait for them to start shooting. He moved to Petra and pushed her to the floor, shielding her with his body as the bullets made holes in the stage behind them instead. Almost immediately, sparks and shattered glass rained the stage lights being destroyed, and the ceiling made noise like it was ready to cave in. Amanda dove behind a column, breathing hard. She was so angry, but she couldn't do anything about it now. Damn Devin! Why didn't he move when she told him to? She wondered as she fumbled for her communicator. "Devin! Say
