CHAPTER 230: Before the Descent
The fortnight went in careful preparation. Brogan assembled a portable forge that looked, to Ethan's eye, absurdly small for the work ahead: folding bellows, an anvil no bigger than a saddlebag, tools whose uses he could not begin to guess. When asked, Brogan said that a true forge could be built anywhere by someone who knew how, and that the tools were only ever the smaller half of the work. Rurik found supplies and two of the king's guard to ride escort as far as the border, and counted the provisions with a dwarven precision that left no margin for waste and no chance of running short.Havram spent the fortnight writing. Rurik confided that the old king's letters were a good deal more carefully worded than anything he usually bothered to put on paper. One went south to Carosso under the king's own seal, addressed to the Prince and not to the Regent. Others went to Yanling and to Illyanfir. Nobody had yet asked three kingdoms to go to war. Havram was making sure that when somebody di

CHAPTER 231: The Road Without Maps
The gates went at first light, and the cold came in under them before the light did.Ethan felt it arrive at the ankle first, where his boot had worn thin over the winter and he had not got round to having it seen to: a thin bright line of it, running up the inside of the bone. Two weeks of forge-warmth had made him forget. Two weeks was apparently all it took.He got his glove on. The left one went on wrong, thumb into the wrong slot, the way it had been going on wrong for a year now, because the glove had been cut for a man who did not keep his reins in that hand. He pulled it off and started again.Behind him the hammers had already started in the lower terraces. They had been the last sound he heard going to sleep for fourteen nights and he had stopped noticing them by the fourth, which meant he was noticing them now only because he was about to lose them."Mule's unhappy," Brogan said."Mule's got the forge on it.""Mule's got the forge on it," Brogan agreed, "and it has worked o

CHAPTER 232: Where the Charts End
The border stones came on the third day. Grey granite, waist-high, four of them in a line with a gap where a fifth had been. Whatever the gap meant, it had meant it for a long time. The elder of the two dwarves took Brogan's forearm in the gate-grip and held it longer than protocol allowed."Ironroot will watch for your return," he said, to all of them, and let go, and looked at Ethan a moment past the polite length before turning his horse. Then they were four, and then the waystone was behind a fold of ground, and then it was not there at all.The land changed so slowly that Ethan spent most of an afternoon failing to name it.It was not dead. That was the trouble. Dead ground he had crossed before and dead ground announced itself — the smell of it, the absence of insects, the way light goes flat over anything that has stopped growing. This grass grew. It grew to precisely the same height everywhere, across a slope, which grass does not do. The trees stood up out of it at intervals t

CHAPTER 233: Ash Like Snow
The ash began on the sixth day, out of a sky with nothing in it.Ethan watched for the source for most of an hour before he accepted there was not one. It simply started, some way overhead, at a height that did not change: below that line, ash; above it, grey air and more grey air going up.It got into everything. That was the first honest thing about it. It went down the back of his collar and into the seam where the collar was stitched and stayed there, and by midday the crease of his elbow had a grey line in it, and by evening, when he unbuckled, there was a clean pale band of skin at his wrist where the glove had been and grey everywhere else, like a farmer's tan run backwards."It doesn't melt," Brogan said. He had a flake of it on his palm and was turning the hand slowly under the flat light. "Course it doesn'

CHAPTER 234: The City That Should Not Gleam
They came up a low ridge on the ninth day and the ash stopped at the top of it like a line ruled across the world.Below, in the bowl of the valley, stood a city.Ethan's first thought was that his eyes had gone. The ash did that; he had had two days of grey and the color came at him all at once, gold and red and a green so saturated it looked wet. Towers in pale gold stone. Banners out stiff in a wind. And sunlight on all of it, falling in a clean shaft out of a sky that had not permitted sunlight for two days. His second thought was that he could hear a market. Not faintly. Carting-noise — iron rims on set stone, which is a sound nothing else makes — a woman's voice pitched to carry over a crowd, and under it the low unbroken churn of several thousand people going about an ordinary morning."That's not possible," Garrick said.He had the spyglass out. His hands were not steady and he was making no attempt to pretend otherwise; Ethan could see the eyepiece describing a small circle ag

CHAPTER 235: What the Glass Promises
The gates were open. That was the first wrong thing, and Ethan did not understand why it was wrong until he was eighty yards past them, when he worked out that there were no gate-guards, no toll-table, no ledger, nobody to ask them their business — and that every other city he had entered in four years had asked him his business before he got his horse's nose through. The cobbles were worn. That was the second wrong thing, and it was worse. They were worn smooth in the centre and rough at the edges, as they should be, and the wear was perfect, and it was everywhere, and it was all the same age. Two hundred years of feet, laid down at once, like a coat of paint.Ethan crouched and put his hand flat on them. Warm. Sun-warm, from a sun that had not been in that sky when the

CHAPTER 236: The King of Borrowed Glory
She turned, mid-laugh, and found him.Ethan had been ready for a great many things and he had not been ready for the recognition. Her face did the whole sequence in about a second — the laugh finishing, the eyes moving, the eyes stopping, and then the smile arriving, that crooked one that had always come up slightly higher on the left, warming into something he had spent eleven months carefully not remembering in detail because remembering in detail was how you lost a whole evening."You came back," she said.In her voice. With her cadence. With the small catch on the second word that she had always had and had never once heard herself make. And Ethan's foot went forward. He did not decide it. The foot went. It came up
