CHAPTER 11
Sean turned to Dante, his frown deepening. “Are you going to be quiet?”Dante shrugged with a grin. “I’m just saying you should pay attention to what you’re doing. If anything goes wrong, you won’t be let off easily.”Sean rose to his feet abruptly. He had tried to concentrate, to do what he came for—but the man wouldn’t stop talking.“Since you’re the one who caused this mess, go ahead and fix it,” Sean snapped, not ready to stay any longer.Dante hadn’t just made things worse—he was also trying to act like it wasn’t his fault.Abrill and Victor were taken aback. They thought Sean was only venting—until he grabbed his soaked jacket from Greg and headed for the door. That’s when they realized he meant it: he was leaving.“Hold on, Mr. O’Connor!” Abrill called out, glancing at Victor before hurrying after him. “Are you really leaving?”“Yes, I am,” Sean replied without looking back. “The professional who ruined everything is still here to take care of it.”That didn’t sit well with Abr
CHAPTER 12
Without another word, the room exploded into motion as everyone scrambled to follow his orders. Sean stayed behind, locked in, eyes glued to the screen like a man disarming a bomb. And in a way, he was.Soon, they all gathered around him, watching as he worked. Even Dante stepped closer, trying to understand what Sean was doing—but he couldn’t. None of it made sense. The steps, the style—it was all unfamiliar.“How is this going to work?!” Dante demanded, turning to the other experts. “These steps are rigid and completely break protocol. At this rate, he’s going to make things worse!”“Such bullshit,” another expert muttered. “He’s probably just putting on a show to impress the Strouds.”Dante scowled and shook his head. “He’s going to crash the system entirely.”Sean’s fingers flew across the keys, eyes locked on the scrolling code.Lines of text flickered rapidly. Files surfaced and vanished. A complex network map spread across the monitor, red lines pulsing through it like veins.S
CHAPTER 13
“Sister!” Julian’s voice rang out, sharp and strained. “Did you just let Sean go after he hit me?!”Julian sat on the hospital bed, mummified in white bandages from neck to toe. His chest, arms, and legs were locked in place, wrapped tight. He couldn’t move. His legs dangled, useless, not even touching the floor. He strained—nothing. His arms wouldn’t lift. Fingers twitched, barely. No grip, no strength. Trapped.Only his mouth, eyes, and nose were visible through the bandages. He remembered getting beaten up, but he didn’t recall having his arms and legs broken. That made him even angrier at Sean.‘Did he break my legs and hands while I was unconscious?’ he wondered bitterly.“Did you think we were going to let him off?” Lillian said, stepping to the side of the bed and glancing down at him.Since he had only just woken up, Julian had no idea how many people were in the room with him.“I wasn’t talking to you!” Julian snapped, trying to turn his head but wincing in pain instead. “Why
CHAPTER 14
Even though Nate felt good seeing her, Rosalind didn’t feel the same. A frown creased her face. She had overheard enough to know they were scheming something, and since Nate was part of it, she suspected he might have been the one to convince them.“Rosalind, you’re here!” Julian shouted, trying to turn his head to look at her, but recoiling in pain. “Look at me, Rosalind! I can barely move my neck!”Rosalind glanced at her brother and brushed past Nate to get closer. Nate caught a whiff of her perfume as she did, and his eyes brightened even more.“Are you feeling any better?” she asked Julian. “Does it hurt a lot?”“It does!” Julian cried. “It hurts so much! I can barely move, and the doctor said I won’t be able to walk for a few days! What do you expect me to do?! When are you going to bring Sean here? He’s the one who did this to me.”Seeing her brother like that, Rosalind frowned. His entire body was bandaged, and the doctor had confirmed he wouldn’t be able to walk for a while.
CHAPTER 15
Victor led Sean toward the waiting car, his steps steady and composed. As they approached, he opened the door for him with a courteous gesture. Sean moved to step inside but stopped just short, his hand resting on the doorframe.Victor noticed.“Mr. O’Connor,” he said, smiling with quiet gratitude. “As a token of our appreciation, the Stroud family would like to present you with this—”He signaled, and an assistant stepped forward carrying a long velvet case. Opening it, Victor revealed an antique jade pendant set in gold.“This is our family’s ancestral pendant, gifted only to those we hold in the highest esteem. With it, doors will open for you in places that don’t welcome outsiders.”Sean’s face remained unreadable, but his gaze lingered on the pendant. “This is too much, Mr. Stroud.”“It’s the least we can offer,” Victor replied. “And the research you requested—we’ll send the files to your private email shortly.”After a pause, Sean took the pendant. “Thank you. I’ll accept it—onl
CHAPTER 16
Sean glanced down at his pants the moment the woman’s words rang out. His clothes weren’t from any regular boutique that just anyone could stroll into—they were custom-made by a designer.More like exclusively made.“I don’t understand what you’re saying,” Sean said calmly, “but it’s true that I’m here to join the Stroud family. They’re expecting me.”The woman scoffed, folding her arms across her chest. “And I’m supposed to believe that? You look like you wandered in here by accident.”Sean raised a brow. He couldn’t understand why she was going on like that when all he’d done was tell her he was there to meet someone.Besides, how could someone accidentally wander into a place like this and randomly claim to be part of a high-profile group? It made him wonder whether she was sober or just naturally rude. The maître d’ clicked her tongue. “You know what? I don’t have time to argue with delusional delivery boys.”Sean stayed silent, watching as she reached behind the desk, pulled out
CHAPTER 17
The moment Sean and Abrill walked into the room, a wave of silence swept over everyone. All heads turned, most eyes landing on Sean. Before leaving earlier, Abrill had told them she was going to wait for Sean, who had agreed to join them for lunch. At first, she thought he had turned her down because he was busy, but it turned out he'd changed his mind and returned. As the realization sank in, the silence quickly gave way to murmurs and hurried footsteps.“He was the one who fixed it?” one of the tech members from the branch office asked, wide-eyed.Sean looked at the man but didn’t recognize him. He had seen most of the people working here, but not this one.“He did,” Abrill said proudly, giving Sean a quick nod. “He found the breach, traced the hidden loop, and shut it down before it could do more damage.”There was a stunned pause—then the room erupted into applause.“Man, I’ve been trying to figure that out for hours!” a young guy in a hoodie exclaimed. “You just walked in and cra
CHAPTER 18
Sean didn’t think. He turned from the window, bolted out of the restroom, and raced down the hall.No one stopped him—no one even looked up. The conversations in the lunchroom continued as if nothing had happened. However, the man he’d asked for directions earlier glanced at him, his expression still dark.Sean burst through the exit stairwell, taking the steps two at a time, barely registering the pounding of his boots against the concrete. He needed to get to the parking lot fast.Outside, the van’s engine roared to life. Sean shoved through the heavy glass doors and sprinted across the pavement, just in time to see the vehicle peel away from the curb, tires screeching as it turned hard onto the main road.“Damn it,” he hissed, watching it disappear down the street. But he didn’t stop. He scanned the lot and spotted a black motorcycle parked a few feet away, a helmet dangling from the handlebars.Without hesitation, he vaulted over a low barrier, ripped the keys from the ignition, a
CHAPTER 19
Sean’s calm, cold voice both unnerved and terrified the men. They hadn’t expected him to show up just as they arrived. To them, it felt as if he had been waiting, ready to strike the moment they appeared. The worst part? None of them even knew who he was.“Don’t be scared!” the man who had regrouped them shouted. “We still have the upper hand. We outnumber him!”“Right.”The men seemed to draw confidence from that.Another thug charged with a switchblade. Sean sidestepped, grabbed the man’s wrist mid-swing, and twisted until the blade clattered to the ground. A rapid flurry of punches to the gut followed, finished with a knee to the chin that sent the attacker sprawling. The fifth man tried to tackle him from behind—big mistake. Sean planted his foot, bent low, and flipped the guy over his shoulder. He hit the concrete with a sickening thud. He didn’t get up.Six down.Only one remained—the same man who had regrouped them. He hesitated, eyes darting between his unconscious teammates a
CHAPTER 20
Abrill looked at Sean like he’d grown two heads. She understood that they had been after her—and that she had the right to know who they were and why they had come for her. But still, she was shaken. After all, this was the first time she had actually been kidnapped. In the past, there had been threats, sure. But none of them had ever succeeded, and none had felt quite like this.“Question them?” she repeated, her voice uncertain. “You mean... like, interrogate?”Sean glanced at her, his eyes drifting to her hand. Though she’d looked calm just moments ago, her hands were trembling, betraying the fear she was trying hard to hide.He nodded, choosing not to comment on it. “Yes. You're the one they tried to take. Your questions might hit differently.”Abrill’s lips parted slightly in surprise. She couldn’t tell if it was the lingering fear or the fact that Sean had said it so casually—like interrogating seven bound men in an alley was just another chore.“I don’t think I’m cut out for th
