The knocking came at a time when the tavern was beginning to settle into the quiet of the evening. The heavy oak door to Rhok's room sounded with heavy thuds.

Rhok looked at the door with a sour gaze, "It better be who I think it is..."

He opened the door to find Ben standing there, the head and owner of the tavern, also the second in command of the Silver Blade Guild. Ben’s worn cloak was dusted with dirt from gods know where, and beneath his furrowed brow, sweat trailer from his face.

"Back so soon Ben? Did the spirits come to haunt me or has Darrell sent you to abduct me again” Rhok asked, stepping out and stretching his legs and back.

Ben gave a half smile, but his eyes were sharp, glinting with the weight of news. “Neither, though Darrell has taken a new interest in you,” he said, producing two heavy leather sacks that clinked with the unmistakable sound of coins. “He calls you... intriguing. Said you’ve got more potential than most.”

Rhok arched an eyebrow, Ben had got gotten hi

The tavern was alive with noise, laughter, mugs clinking, and a bard playing something that sounded like a goat being strangled, but somehow people still clapped to the beat. The Silver Blade Guild’s tavern wasn’t fancy, but it was homey, warm, and above all, familiar.Rhok sat at a round table near the hearth, legs stretched out, a half-finished mug of dark ale in his hand. Liora sat across from him, sipping something bright red that smelled like cherries with a slab of well-roasted and sliced meat by her side. Eryn was already halfway into her second bottle, and Dian had decided one wasn’t enough and was now double-fisting two mugs like a warmonger. “You know,” Eryn said, slouching in her seat, “I’m starting to forget how terrifying those corpse puppets were. Almost feels like we just beat up a haunted scarecrow.”“Don’t tempt fate,” Dian replied, pointing at her with his mug. “Last time you said something like that, we ended up almost getting eaten by wolves immediately after the

Lord Darrell stood at the head of the war room, arms crossed, expression stone cold and serious. His sharp green eyes scanned the group like they owed him rent.“What in the seven hells happened out there?” he demanded, voice sharp enough to cut steel. “Explain yourself, boy!”Rhok stood, arms at his side, back straight. He was still pale, his skin slightly cold to the touch, and his breathing uneven. But he was alive, and that was something. He met Darrell’s gaze without flinching.“It started with the reptilian monsters, turns out that they were hunting and killing humans but we managed to kill them all off in their nest, but the true problem was the demonic worshipper,” Rhok began. “He was controlling the corpses like puppets, using them to attack us. I held him off for as long as I could with my shadow powers alone, but he was... persistent, fast, strong, not human anymore. He was using some kind of dark magic to feed the skeletal bodies from an altar.”Rhok paused for a second,

The sun was beginning to set by the time Rhok and his party reached the Capitol gates. The city walls loomed tall and familiar, lined with guards and banners in the different noble houses, even the crest of the Silver Blade Guild fluttering in the evening wind. It had only been a few days, but to Rhok, it felt like a lifetime. A cursed ruin, a demon worshipper, Blackfrost nearly consuming his soul… Yeah, a lot had happened. The streets buzzed as usual, merchants yelling over one another, nobles parading their oversized horses, and kids running through alleys like it was a game of tag. But Rhok didn’t stop to take in the Capitol’s charm. He walked like a man with urgency because he was in fact troubled. The Silver Blade Guild stood tall and filled with adventurers as usual. As they approached its wooden old doors, Eryn stretched her arms.“Back to civilization. I missed real food,” she sighed dramatically.“You were scared to shit of the Kanthas,” Dian muttered. “And Rhok unconscious

Rhok felt the cold. Not just on his skin. Not just in his bones. It was deeper than that, burrowing past marrow, past flesh, past thought, down into the very pit of his soul. The Blackfrost had done something to him. It didn’t just coat his body. It claimed him completely, it wasn’t a spell, it wasn’t magic, it was something worse. Older. Hungrier. Feral. He heard a voice, but it came like a whisper underwater, muddled and familiar, yet unfamiliar.[WARNING: SOUL UNSTABLE. SYSTEM RECALIBRATING. ABY IS WORKING HARDER THAN YOU DESERVE, JUST FYI.]Aby. Of course it was Aby, that glitchy, sarcastic system lodged into his soul like a digital worm. Rhok barely registered the words. They were distant, annoying, pointless. He didn’t care. All he knew was that he was cold. Incomprehensibly cold.It wasn’t the kind of chill you could wrap a blanket around or warm yourself with fire. It wasn’t even the freezing cold that split stone and stopped hearts. No, this was colder than that. It was the v

The air shifted slightly, as though reacting to the omnipotent powers of the Black Frost.Even the man, no, the demonic worshipper that had been so arrogant before… now trembled. His twisted smile faded as his skeletal marionettes stood frozen around him, shattered in places, as though they themselves feared what they were seeing. The black frost at Rhok’s feet pulsed like a living curse, and the air grew so cold, it even froze at some point.“You... What have you done?” the man hissed.Rhok didn’t answer. His eyes, darker than night, stared at him, through him.The demonic worshipper’s expression twisted, this time not in arrogance, but in raw disbelief and fear. “That power,” he growled, his voice cracking like dry bones. “That is forbidden! That is not yours! WHO GAVE IT TO YOU?!”The demonic worshipper raised both hands. From the depths of the altar, bones moved again, clattered, screamed even some more, much louder than the skeletal giant that stood before Rhok. The ground ruptur

The second marionette rose like a nightmare sculpted from the remains of graveyard corpses. But worse that anything, the previous wolf monster has fused with the humanoid skeletal monster.Twisted bone lashed with tendons, taller than the trees, its head a crooked skull fused with iron. Its limbs stretched far too long, moving with a hideous grace as it stepped from behind the altar. Half its ribs had been reshaped into jagged spears, the other half twitched with stolen muscle. And inside its chest cavity, like a blasphemous core, glowed the blood-red rune of its master.Rhok stared up at it, teeth clenched, shoulders heaving. His breath came out in sharp clouds that instantly froze as they left his lips. Blood trickled from his nose, from a cut above his eyebrow, from the gash running down his thigh. He was hurt. Bad.But he didn’t move back.“I’m not done,” he growled, dragging his dagger against the ground. The steel sparked, then hissed as it touched the cold mist swirling around
