Prologue.
Greg staggered back falling to one knee, his broadsword clattered to the ground as he let go of it, he ignored the pain from his throbbing leg. It was dark and neither could he see the pool of blood left by the gaping hole in his leg, his eyes were focused forward. His hand tightly held the scroll he had been entrusted with, he was the last one who remained, they were a party of four sent out to report the rumors that had been heard around the borders of The Blackened Lands. The team leader Scar, had given him the scroll, commanding him to deliver it to the clan while they held off the unknown, a creature of Chaos long thought to be banished to the depths of the underworld, his attention snapped back at a sudden movement. He hadn't expected the attack, yet he couldn't have evaded it. He was certainly sure he didn't have long to live if he kept dawdling about, his eyes kept searching through the thick fog, and then he caught a sudden movement to his right. He instinctively rolled over
Chapter 1. The Scholar.
Kirin sat on top of a rock outcrop, looking far into the distance, he was clad in a thick supple fur coat dyed black, hand gloves thicker than dough to keep the frost off his fingers, metal laced boots that swung freely in the air from where he sat.His entire outfit contrasted the snowy white mountains, still lost in thought about why he had bothered coming all the way here when he could have drank some hot wine while cultivating, his growth had been stumped for months, years actually and it kept nagging him that his fellow clan mates had left him behind, gaining more strength. But here he was, in the mountains, looking for sapphire gems, these gems were higher in purity and soul essence than a regular soul stone and he knew why he had been sent out to get them. Because his level was so low, they couldn't think of anything better than him going to find soul stones."Damnation" he cursed at himself, he didn't hear the light footsteps that slowly approached him."Cursing again, are you
Chapter 2. Heavens Will.
Kirin slowly approached the pavilion of the Thunder Clan, he walked slowly through the thicket of snow, still reeling from the effects of the frostbite that had eventually gotten to his fingers, he would've given anything up for a hot cup of wine.Seth stood in front of him leading the way, they walked into the Pavilion, heading towards the pagoda looming ahead in the distance, the snow fell more lightly here but that didn't mean it got any warmer.Eventually, they stood in front of the doors to the pagoda, the guards opened the doors for them to enter, all the while they kept their eyes on Kirin, unfortunately, he couldn't be more bothered, after all, he was the misfit of the clan.Inside, an elderly man sat cross-legged sipping tea and seemed unperturbed by their sudden arrival, his hair was long and white from old age with wrinkles etched over his face, he looked to be beyond hundred if using the mundane human years of counting, but underneath his garment was a well-toned body that
Chapter 3. Lost Technique.
Sitting in a dark room, dripping with sweat and little lacerations surrounding his entire body, Kirin sat cross-legged focused in deep concentration, he gritted his teeth stubbornly trying his best to control the upsurge of energy within him.A sudden bolt of lightning materialized from him, shooting out randomly in the room. The spot where the lightning struck remained blackened and burned, unable to persist even further Kirin finally gave up completely exhausted. He crumpled down on the floor, his torso facing upwards towards the ceiling, sweat falling to the wooden floorboards while his chest heaved in and out.He stretched out his right hand upwards looking at it with determination, he had finally broken through and had become a second-rate martial artist, he clenched his fingers. Grand Zenin had given him one more chance at cultivation, although he had nearly died trying to achieve it. He thought he had died and got revived again by the ominous power, but something still felt wr
Chapter 4. Fools Death.
"You sure you want to come along today with us, I mean, it's your first time Kirin," Seth whispered to Kirin who walked beside him. Kirin seemed different, more confident, something that Seth had always found amiss in his dear friend."Something happened with Grand Zenin right?" Seth asked, Kirin simply smiled at his dear friend."I wouldn't be here if something didn't happen you know," his puffed, eyes brimming with confidence. Seth seemed confused but also increasingly curious."So tell me, did you finally break through and heal that unknown sickness of yours?" He said in a hushed tone, other warriors looked towards them for being so chatty, and also because of the outcast.Kirin wasn't supposed to be here, they saw him as a liability, a risk, but no one could say anything about him. After all, it was The Grandmaster who had approved him being on this mission, it was a covert mission, to investigate and report back."First off I'm not sick, and no I didn't heal it or whatever, but I
Chapter 5. Will of Fire.
"Heal the boy and take him away" Tharros shouted commands at some of the men, they were still too stunned to speak but Kirin dragged himself up, staggered for a moment with blood dripping from his nose."I'm good sir", he forced himself to say, but Tharros had already left, locked in battle with the thing that was once Greg but wasn't him anymore. Kirin struggled to get himself to his feet, he wondered why nobody had come to his aide.'Do they really not care about me that much', he thought to himself as he dug up an elixir from his bag, finishing the entire potion in one go. After a few subtle moments, he got back to himself, his wounds were healed. He turned around feeling refreshed only to see the reason why no one had come to him, the other ten men were surrounded. By men with blackened eyes, they seemed like normal men, except, they were exactly like Greg.Kirin immediately drew his saber, falling into Blood stance which he had mastered for years on end, this was his first real e
Chapter 6. Fluxxara.
Kirin lay flat on the ground, looked up at the sky seeing the clouds disperse, he felt the wind against his body and knew for a fact that he was entirely naked."Shit"He had also found another eerie fact, he seemed to have total immunity to lightning. This was something he had never heard of nor had he expected it. Anyone could be attacked by any element, even the one that you were primarily trained up in as the base for your cultivation. He had never heard of a case where one had total and complete immunity to an element.Yet here he was, completely unscathed by the attack that came from the heavens, he smiled at himself as he covered his eyes with his right arm, the tears swelled up but he pushed them down. He had survived, he escaped death.Kirin heard footsteps walking towards him and turned to see who it was. Tharros looked at Kirin, his jaw slack, eyes wide with surprise."By the gods, boy you actually survived that?" Tharros asked genuinely surprised. He had never met a sing
Chapter 7. Myths are Real?
"What's a Fluxxara?" Kirin asked at random, it was something he had never heard of, or read in the books, the rest of the men kept quiet, he looked at them expectantly but they all looked away, he suddenly noticed how tired and cut up they were, they seemed to have injuries and wounds that were yet to heal."It's a myth, a story that mothers used to scare children" Tharros responded, he walked towards the man who sat on the ground shivering in fear."Get him up Boys, we have a different destination in mind" he commanded his warriors."We aren't going back to the Thunder clan?" Kirin asked, suddenly surprised, he hadn't expected detours on missions, Tharros looked back at him knowing exactly what he was thinking."You're probably thinking it's against the code of the cult to stray from the mission but tell me something boy..." Tharros spoke, his gaze fixated on Kirin."Would you rather go back to the clan and report your findings or would you rather sojourn to the Water clan, telling t
Chapter 8. Possession.
After a few moments had passed and he was all alone, Kirin stood and picked up the Odachi blade that Tharros had left for him. Through his pain and hurt he couldn't hide his excitement, Tharros had given him his very own weapon, a blade forged for a peak martial master. He slowly unsheathed the blade in the darkness, the steel itself was hazy blue and beautiful, and it reflected the light of the Moon rising up ahead, he completely removed it from his scabbard, holding it with his hands he slowly took his stance. He breathed in and out calmly, turning his focus to just the blade, he sent his energy through the blade and felt its natural slender curve, the sharpness, the lethality. He forgot every other thing around him, the men that camped earlier and the songs they sang, or the thickness of the fog as the night grew darker, he completely focused on one swing.Calmly and steadily, not taking any stance whatsoever, to make a single cut, a single slash imbued with intent. A slash with a
Chapter 9. Tit for Tat.
Amidst the burned trees, the charred grounds and death hung in the air like the squeals of a dying lover. Kirin had been flung away by the force of Tharros's final attack, he lay dazed on the ground more than two hundred meters away, a little over to his left was Seth, he was burned, wounds surrounding his body, some were grave and others were scratches, but he was still breathing.Kirin couldn't stop his ears from ringing, and neither could he stand up, he had completely lost his balance and bearings. But his eyes were fixated at a certain point, he kept looking at where Tharros once was, the only man who cared enough ever to protect him with his very own life."Uuurgh", Seth grunted as he slowly gained consciousness, Kirin hadn't taken his eyes off where Tharros had been, lips trembling slightly, but what remained there now was just burnt trees, melted sand, and four engravings into the ground where the lightning had struck. "Kirin... are you okay?" Seth asked, he saw Kirin mumblin
