Chapter 10. Certain Death.
Kirin weaved through the forest, running in between trees, avoiding roots, trying to evade death as best he could. Seth followed close behind him, and not far from them, the serpent chased with murderous intent. It didn't bother sliding between the trees, rather it smashed through them with its enormous body, the sheer size of the Serpent was enough to make a man barf in fear, its scales protecting it from any physical damage."I don't think... we can keep running from that thing" Kirin said, exhaustion and realization slowly overcame him, they couldn't leave the forest while that monster chased them unless they would endanger the lives of weaker humans in settlements not too far from the outskirts."Yeah, you're right" Seth responded, "Let's part ways for now to confuse the serpent" he panted, then ran towards his left, Kirin followed his right not knowing exactly where he was running, he looked behind him and his heart dropped to his belly.Of course, the serpent had locked its sigh
Chapter 11. Sly Nature.
Seth snuck through the bushes, carefully watching the serpent's body as he etched closer, It didn't move and so did the body of Kirin, he got close enough to him and began dragging him backward."Hey Kirin, if you can hear me then stand the hell up, what the hell was that last move you just made?" Seth asked as he struggled to pull the body of Kirin, but unfortunately, Kirin had blacked out. With no other alternative, Seth dropped him on the musty grass a few hundred meters away from the dead serpent and searched Kirin's belongings. He knew that the fool always carried at least one extra bottle of elixir, he found three in Kirin's pouch that hung over a broken tree.He immediately uncorked it, pouring its contents into Kirin's open mouth, Seth adjusted his jaw so Kirin could drink it all completely, he waited impatiently and then saw some colour return to Kirin's face, he stirred in his unconscious state before his eyes fluttered open.Kirin coughed out some blood as he finally gained
Chapter 12. Maiden in Distress.
Seth stood up on a rock outcrop, he squinted his eyes trying his best to see as far as he could, their destination was the human settlements for now, so they could restock and get back on the mission."What do you see?" Kirin asked in excitement, more than Seth, he was so happy to have left the Blackened forest, never again would he go near a forest such as this, he wondered how many warriors had fallen victim to the coy traps those intelligent monsters made."It's not so far from here, a settlement but I don't see any people" Seth said calmly, "It's a bit unsettling" he finished, he calmed down from the rock and stood side by side with Seth."Well I'm sure they've spotted us and are just hiding" Kirin spoke, "Besides, if I was them and I spotted two men coming out from this damned forest, I'll hide too" he finished.Seth sighed deeply, "Well that settles it then, let's get on with it, shall we?" He began walking in front of Kirin, and Kirin followed immediately."How's your soul core
Chapter 13. Priorities.
"Don't tell me..." Kirin stretched his hand out to touch it but Seth held him back, they both looked closer at Lyda's back, ignoring her nakedness."It's the vine," Lyda said calmly, as though she had already accepted the precept of death itself. She began putting on her clothes again. The cold here in the mountains was beyond what a human could handle with just bare skin."How is that latched onto your back? It doesn't look like something I could cut out and guarantee your life," Kirin said, trying his best to calm down. He had seen a few scary monsters and heard a lot worse, but he had never seen or heard of anything like this."Its pollens are breathed into the body" Lyda began talking, "They take root anywhere in your body, taking control over your mind and body, making you do as it wishes" She finished."And how are you able to still be in control of your mind and body" Kirin asked curiously, he was scared at the concept of going on again to fight another demonic monster, even if
Chapter 14. Friend or Foe.
Seth watched Kirin walk away, his frustration heightened because he knew exactly what Kirin meant and felt, he had just wanted to avoid the responsibility of carrying the lives of children, if any of them died, their deaths would be on him, but unfortunately for him, he had a foolhardy friend that followed the desires of his heart."Wait, Damnit!" Seth cursed as he took a step forward, Kirin turned back with a smile as he saw Seth following him, he knew Seth wouldn't abandon him, that's just the kind of person he was.Lyda guided them down the mountain, she followed twists and turns that Kirin would have never known, that was the thing about the natives in a human settlement, they knew more about their land than even the animals that lived there, Kirin was grateful to have her help, they avoided almost every wild animal that could have posed as a problem to them.Soon enough they arrived at the village, the entrance looked eerie and quiet, there were no people around, neither did they
Chapter 15. Ruthlessness.
"Run?" Seth asked as he shifted back."Run!" Kirin shouted as they both ran back in the direction they had come from, he could smell the pollens in the air and circulated his essence even more furiously as he ran."What the hell is happening, Kirin?" Seth asked as they both ran, they ran side by side as they slowly approached the outskirts of the village."Possession" he shouted back."She's a Cultivator with a soul core, the monster took possession of her body making it even stronger...." Before Kirin could finish his statement, he saw a child running on the top roof chasing after them, before he could react the child jumped an inhumane distance, something impossible for mundane humans. The child carried a sickle in its hands and brought it down, aiming it towards the head of Kirin, he saw the attack, and with lightning-fast reflexes, he drew his odachi and made an overhead block at the attack with the flat of his blade. The strength behind the attack of the child was unbelievable, h
Chapter 16. Despair.
Seth pulled Kirin to his feet, dragging him away from the horde that began chasing after them."Kirin, I need you here right now, focus" Seth shouted, but Kirin kept looking at the thing that was once Lyda. How it casually walked away, unbothered by all the lives it had taken over, killed and maimed, his rage was so apparent it made his eyes red, bloodshot with anger."Kirin!" Seth shouted once more as he dragged his friend through the snow, the villagers began enclosing them slowly, Kirin forced himself to look away from Lyda, he had to survive, that was the only way he could ever enact his revenge on that monster. He looked around him and for the first time just noticed how close the villagers were to him, they all carried knives, sickles, clubs, pickaxes, anything that could be called a weapon was in their possession. He stopped dragging his feet and began running side by side with Seth, they ran through an alley way with several of the villagers after them, to make matters worse,
Chapter 17. Desire to Kill.
The attacks came from everywhere, there wasn't enough attacking range for either Seth or Kirin to move about freely, with every stroke of their blade, blood was spilled, bowels were disembowelled, and body parts were maimed.Seth continued in his onslaught. He had blocked the humane part of him, putting his survival first against any other thing. That was how he had always survived. Some may have called it cowardice, named him a fool, or a man without Honor, but he knew deep down. What was an honour to a dead man? Pride to a man with no arms? Bravery to a man who gave his life to those who would forget him in two summers? It was all pointless, survival and strength were what he needed to live, to gain his freedom, to do as he wished, but he restrained himself from his desires lest he be misjudged, for now, he just had to focus on getting out of this situation alive, that was his priority, living. The numbers around him began dwindling, he was glad that Kirin finally had enough sense t
Chapter 18. Unprecedented.
Kirin held his blade in place, using it as a medium to pour lightning into the Blood Vine, he could see some of the vines withering and dying, and he saw the discomfort on Lyda's lips, he knew he could win this, if only he had as much essence as he had wished, a vine attacked, lurching straight at him from behind Lyda.Kirin immediately dodged with lightning reflexes, pulling his sword out and jumped back the way he had come, standing by Seth's side."Calm down Kirin, save up your essence" Seth spoke slowly. "This is a battle of attrition" he looked at him, the sides of his lips tugged into a smile."So you think you can do that thing the Captain did before he passed?" Seth asked feeling a bit hopeful but Kirin shook his head."I won't be able to perform something like that. Not only are my essence reserves subpar, but my body could break down and implode if I make careless mistakes" Kirin scratched his head in embarrassment, he had remembered how Tharros had called down the lightning
Chapter 19. Lightening Blade.
Kirin ducked, barely dodging a vine that whipped past his head. He was sure his head would have gone rolling if that vine had hit. He gulped slowly, understanding that things weren't going to be as easy as he thought they would be."You think it's that easy to get rid of me? The Blood Vine!" Kayden heard from within the wraps of vines intertwined with each other, he turned and looked at Seth who had somehow managed to get up and found a safe spot to rest. But he knew Seth wasn't safe for long, Kirin poured his essence into his feet, Increasing his base speed by threefold he shot himself forward towards a pillar, as soon as he landed on the pillar he jumped off again to another pillar. The reason why he did this was simple, the vines follow the life energy that they sense and hunt it down, with Kirin releasing his base cultivation making his presence more dominant, he took the attention off Seth who had reduced his presence to almost nothing so he could circulate his essence to heal hi
