“Run!!” Malcolm’s Dad yelled with a scared look on his face.“Survive and stay alive!!!” His Mom was beside his Dad, with tears streaming down her eyes, as she yelled.“No, I can’t leave you guys in this house to burn,” The young man said as he tried to hold his parent's hand and felt frustrated when he wasn't able to pull them out of where they got stuck.“Go!! Save yourself. We are already doomed to die here tonight,” The mother said and just then a burning wood from above crashed on the mother and the father making the boy scream. The whole house then began to collapse and with tears streaming down his eyes the young man tried to run out.He cried out in pain when he ran into the fire to run out of the house because that was the only way out.Malcolm then jerked up from sleep into a sitting position. He just had a nightmare. He kept panting and sweating profusely while he looked around his room with fear.He was constantly plagued with nightmares of the fire that claimed his fa

“My daughter, Aurora, wants to get married,” Mr. Harthaway began. “But the man she’s chosen… I don’t trust him. He’s wealthy, yes, but arrogant and spoiled. The kind of man who sees people as things to collect.”Malcolm frowned. “And you think I could change her mind?”Mr. Harthaway smiled faintly. “She’s stubborn, but not blind. I believe if you can just spend time with her, she’ll see your worth. I want a man with integrity for my daughter. Someone who’s not after money or power. Someone like you.”Malcolm looked down at his worn shoes and then backed up at the wealthy businessman sitting beside him in the car. “But sir… I’m just a broke secretary. I don’t have anything. How could I possibly compete with someone who has it all?” He asked.“You have more than you realize,” Mr. Hathaway said. “You have tolerance. Not every man can do that. If it were to be young men your age, they would lashed out and insulted their boss. But you didn't. You’re humble, hardworking, and kind. I se

“Enough,” Malcolm said sharply, his voice cutting through the air like a blade. He had had enough of the Hathaway family belittling him. If it was when his parents were still alive and he was still the presidents son, he was sure they were all going to be nice to him and try to gain his favor. Everyone turned to him, surprised by the sudden firmness in his tone. Even Mr. Hathaway paused mid-step. “I may not come from money. I may not have fancy clothes or a luxurious background. But what I do have is self-respect,” Malcolm continued, his voice unwavering. “And I won’t stand here and let people I’ve just met try to humiliate me because I don’t fit into their idea of what ‘worthy’ looks like,” He was tired of being insulted and looked down on. He wanted to talk back even though it was just once. Aurora’s brothers blinked in disbelief, clearly stunned that the quiet, humble man they had mocked had the audacity to speak back. Malcolm’s eyes swept across the room, finally settli

Mr. Harthaway cleared his throat.“Malcolm, meet me at my office tomorrow morning,” he said, his tone calm but firm. “We’ll talk about your future there.”Malcolm nodded gratefully. “Yes, sir. I’ll be there.”But the moment felt too peaceful. Too good. And as expected, it didn’t last.Anthony, the man Aurora had once wanted to marry, scoffed loudly. His face became angry as he pointed a finger at the whole family.“You all will regret this,” he spat. “You think he’s better than me? You’ll see. Don’t come crawling back when he brings shame to your name!”With those words, he stormed out of the living room, slamming the door behind him.Aurora’s brothers, clearly alarmed, exchanged glances and chased after him.“Anthony, wait! Calm down, let’s talk about this!” Alvin called out.“We’ll sort it out, man!” Belvin added as they disappeared through the door.Malcolm stood still, piecing things together. It now made sense. Anthony must have been close to the family.Maybe even like a bro

Malcom was forced out of his train of thought when Mr. Harthaway gestured for him to sit. “I’ve thought carefully about this, and I’ve decided to make you my personal assistant.”Malcolm blinked, trying to hide his disappointment from showing on his face. He had hoped for something more grand. Perhaps a position in politics or management. Something that made him feel less like a servant and more like someone important.Still, he quickly reminded himself that he had just been jobless two days ago. And the salary Mr. Hathaway would pay him was going to be over five times what he earned at his previous job. That was no small thing.Malcolm nodded and smiled politely. “Thank you, sir. I’m grateful.”But Mr. Harthaway noticed the brief sign of disappointment in Malcolm’s eyes. He leaned forward, placing his hands on the desk.“Malcolm,” he said gently, “I know you expected something more. But I need you to understand why I chose this path for you.”Malcolm listened closely.“If I sud

The banquet hall buzzed with murmurs and side glances. Guests whispered behind champagne glasses as Malcolm stood beside Mr. Hathaway and Aurora. His plain suit couldn’t hide how out of place he looked among men in silk and women in diamonds. But still, he stood tall and confident.“That’s him? The one engaged to Aurora?”“He looks like a waiter.”“I heard he used to be a low-level secretary.”Malcolm overheard some of the whispers but chose not to react. He reminded himself why he was there. This was his chance at redemption and revenge.Just then, a man walked through the crowd with calm elegance and a warm smile. His hair was greying, but his posture still carried power and grace. The guests made way for him to pass signifying that he was a man of importance. It was Mr. Wade—the former vice president during Malcolm’s father’s administration. He was again hit by nostalgia which each step Mr Wade made towards them.Mr Wade was Malcolm’s Dad’s best friend. A man who watches Malcol

Malcolm stood frozen at the edge of the banquet hall, his heart pounding like a drum. The unknown number that had called him just moments ago kept replaying in his head.Who could it be? Did someone already discover his true identity? He glanced around the crowded room. Everyone looked cheerful, smiling, laughing, drinking. But Malcolm couldn’t shake off the worry growing in his chest. What if someone was here to hurt him again? He excused himself politely and walked out of the banquet hall. The long corridor was quiet and empty. He found a private corner with little lighting and pulled out his old phone. The screen had a crack, and the touch was slow, but it worked. He called the number back, holding his breath as the phone rang.“Hello?” Malcolm said. The voice on the other end replied calmly, “Turn around.”Malcolm’s eyes widened in fear. Slowly, he turned around.Standing just a few feet behind him was a man in a black suit with gray hair and kind eyes. Malcolm’s mouth opened

Malcolm sat at the edge of his bed, staring out the small window of his modest apartment. The morning sun had barely risen, but his mind had been awake all night. He kept thinking about his parents, about everything that had been taken from him. The pain still lived in him, deep down. But now, for the first time in years, he had something else, hope and a plan.He pulled out a notepad from his drawer and began writing down his goals. At the top of the list: Justice for Mom and Dad. Beneath that: Rise to Power—One Step at a Time.He had already taken the first step. He began hiring private investigators using money he secretly received from his parents’ lawyer. The lawyer had promised to keep his identity hidden until Malcolm was ready to face the world as his true self. Until then, Malcolm was going to keep trying to power. To him it was also an opportunity to rise without his father’s name being the cause. He purchased a few thrift business shirts and pants to maintain his reput

He quietly opened the door and went in without Mr Hathaway noticing at first. He let out a long breath, trying to push away the feeling that something wasn’t right. But Mr. Harthaway didn’t flinch when he saw Malcolm closing the door, neither did he end the call nor lower his voice. He simply waved Malcolm and continued speaking for another minute before hanging up.It calmed Malcolms worry seeing that Mr Hathaway didn’t act suspicious or jittery when he noticed him. Doing that would have made Malcolm sure that something was off.If Mr. Hathaway was hiding something dangerous, he would have acted differently.Malcolm told himself to stop overthinking things.Mr. Hathaway had given him a job, was supporting his political dreams, and was now about to be his father-in-law.If there was one person in this world he could trust, it had to be him.“I’d like to marry Aurora soon,” Malcolm said once the call ended. “Maybe this week, if possible. I can’t afford a big wedding yet, but we cou

Malcolm woke up early, the weight of the divorce yesterday still sitting heavily on his chest. He knew the road ahead would be harder now. No wife. Just a dream that burned inside him like fire.As he was buttoning up his shirt, when his phone rang. It was Mr. Hathaway.“Hello, sir,” Malcolm answered, trying to sound steady.“Malcolm,” Mr. Hathaway said softly, “I wanted to speak with you… about Aurora.”Malcolm stayed quiet.“I heard what happened and I'm truly sorry. She regrets nothing,” Mr. Hathaway admitted and continued. “But I want to apologize for her behavior. She didn’t have to be so cold and pretend to love you”“It’s okay, sir,” Malcolm replied. “I understand.”“I was hoping you’d consider coming back. Maybe give it another try?” he asked.Malcolm paused. “I’m grateful for everything you’ve done, Mr. Hathaway. But I think it’s time I stand on my own. I’ve got things I need to do. Important things. And I can’t afford distractions right now.”There was a long silence.“I
