Chapter 1
001
001
“Run!!” Malcolm’s Dad yelled with a scared look on his face. “Survive and stay alive!!!” His Mom was beside his Dad, with tears streaming down her eyes, as she yelled. “No, I can’t leave you guys in this house to burn,” The young man said as he tried to hold his parent's hand and felt frustrated when he wasn't able to pull them out of where they got stuck. “Go!! Save yourself. We are already doomed to die here tonight,” The mother said and just then a burning wood from above crashed on the mother and the father making the boy scream. The whole house then began to collapse and with tears streaming down his eyes the young man tried to run out. He cried out in pain when he ran into the fire to run out of the house because that was the only way out. Malcolm then jerked up from sleep into a sitting position. He just had a nightmare. He kept panting and sweating profusely while he looked around his room with fear. He was constantly plagued with nightmares of the fire that claimed his family a year ago. Malcolm Frost was the only son of late former president George Frost and the Heir to the Frost conglomerate. He was the only son of the late president of the ShadenVille whom everyone in the country thought died with his family. That Malcolm survived the fire outbreak in their house which claimed the life of his family was a miracle. He had plastic surgery due to how his body burnt and now had a new face and look. So nobody could recognize him as the son of the Late president. He didn’t want to be recognized because he knew the fire was an attempt by their enemy to wipe out his entire family. When Malcolm’s racing heart due to his recurring nightmare calmed down, he got down from his rickety bed and went to drink a glass of water. It was already morning and it was a Saturday. Normally he wasn’t supposed to go to work but he had to because he was the personal assistant of a small growing company. He was now very poor living in a one-room apartment but he was content with it because to him it was better than being dead. Malcolm’s phone began to ring and he rushed to pick it up. His phone was faulty and he didn’t have the money to fix it yet so he always hit his phone on his palms twice before picking up a call, or else he wouldn’t hear the caller. “You better get to work in the next five minutes or you’re fired,” Malcolm’s angry boss thundered and ended the call before he could speak. He rushed to the bathroom afterward and came out a few seconds later. It’s not like Malcolm’s salary was good and that was he was afraid to lose the job. But it was because this was the only job he could get after he was discharged from the hospital and he needed money to complete his surgery bills. He had graduated from the university when the fire incident that claimed his parents occurred and all his CV and belongings got burnt along with their house during the incident. And even though they didn’t get burnt, who would believe he was Malcolm Frost when the face on his documents would be different from the person they saw physically? Malcolm was fully dressed in the only suit he had and rushed out of his room. Luckily his workplace wasn’t far from his apartment so he ran there. “He is still putting on that same suit,” One of his co-workers mocked him. “Is that the only clothes he has?” Another one laughed as they watched him pass. But Malcolm didn’t mind them, he was already used to their constant picking on him and mockery. “It's been more than five minutes since I called,” Malcolm’s boss lashed out when Malcolm rushed into his office. “Sir, I’m so sorry sir, I haven’t been feeling too well,” He apologized with his head bowed all through. He noticed an elderly man seated in front of his boss's desk but didn't say a word because his boss never liked Malcolm conversing with his business partners. And he had never seen this person in their office so he thought it was a new business partner. “It doesn’t matter because you are fired, you jackass,” His boss thundered and Malcolm instantly went on his knees begging. “Please sir, if you fire me, it’ll take time for me to get another job. How would I be able to feed sir?” He begged with his palms clasped together. “Do I look like I care? Now get out of my office. I never liked you anyway,” His boss yelled and a pitiful look appeared on the face of Malcolm's boss’s business partner but the business partner didn’t utter a word. “Please Sir,” Malcolm continued, still on his knees and this enraged his boss the most. His boss deliberately wanted to fire Malcolm because the girl Malcolm’s boss had eyes for in his company told him to. She despised Malcolm because she begged him to sleep with her but he refused. “Security!!! Get this filthy thing out of my office,” His boss yelled and a hefty security guard ran into his office. The security guy dragged Malcolm out of the office and threw him out of their company building. Malcolm stood up from the ground and began cleaning the dust on his suit with sadness and worry filling his heart. He sat on a roadside bench close to the company and began to think of his next move when his stomach began grumbling. “Want to join me in grabbing something to eat?” A voice said to him and he turned to see it was his boss’s business partner. Malcolm then agreed thinking that maybe this would be an opportunity for him to have time with the old man and ask him if he could work for him. Even though it meant working as his driver. He got into the Old man’s SUV and the driver zoomed off taking them to a restaurant. While on their way, Malcolm took his time to scrutinize the old man. Judging by how he had a driver and the way he dressed, Malcolm knew that this man was more wealthy than his boss. “What is your name?” The old man asked. “My name is Malcolm Frost. Sir,” Hunter answered. “Wow, what a coincidence that you bear the name of our Late president's son,” The old man smiled. “Many people say that a lot sir, but I’m not the late president’s son,” Malcolm lied with a convincing smile. “My name is Benjamin Hathaway and I would want you to be my son-in-law,” The old man said with a smile. “What?” Malcom asked with widened eyes, not able to believe his ears because the Hathaway Corporation was the second biggest company in their country. And the founder, the famous Benjamin Hathaway wanted him to be his son-in-law? “But there is something you need to know first,” Mr Hathaway added with a serious look making its way to his face. Malcolm was never prepared for what he heard next.Expand

010Malcolm woke up early, the weight of the divorce yesterday still sitting heavily on his chest. He knew the road ahead would be harder now. No wife. Just a dream that burned inside him like fire.As he was buttoning up his shirt, when his phone rang. It was Mr. Hathaway.“Hello, sir,” Malcolm answered, trying to sound steady.“Malcolm,” Mr. Hathaway said softly, “I wanted to speak with you… about Aurora.”Malcolm stayed quiet.“I heard what happened and I'm truly sorry. She regrets nothing,” Mr. Hathaway admitted and continued. “But I want to apologize for her behavior. She didn’t have to be so cold and pretend to love you”“It’s okay, sir,” Malcolm replied. “I understand.”“I was hoping you’d consider coming back. Maybe give it another try?” he asked.Malcolm paused. “I’m grateful for everything you’ve done, Mr. Hathaway. But I think it’s time I stand on my own. I’ve got things I need to do. Important things. And I can’t afford distractions right now.”There was a long silence.“I

Did someone already discover his true identity? He glanced around the crowded room. Everyone looked cheerful, smiling, laughing, drinking. But Malcolm couldn’t shake off the worry growing in his chest. What if someone was here to hurt him again? He excused himself politely and walked out of the banquet hall. The long corridor was quiet and empty. He found a private corner with little lighting and pulled out his old phone. The screen had a crack, and the touch was slow, but it worked. He called the number back, holding his breath as the phone rang.“Hello?” Malcolm said. The voice on the other end replied calmly, “Turn around.”Malcolm’s eyes widened in fear. Slowly, he turned around.Standing just a few feet behind him was a man in a black suit with gray hair and kind eyes. Malcolm’s mouth opened

Guests whispered behind champagne glasses as Malcolm stood beside Mr. Hathaway and Aurora. His plain suit couldn’t hide how out of place he looked among men in silk and women in diamonds. THE RISE OF THE CONGRESS MAN 005
005Malcom was forced out of his train of thought when Mr. Harthaway gestured for him to sit. “I’ve thought carefully about this, and I’ve decided to make you my personal assistant.”Malcolm blinked, trying to hide his disappointment from showing on his face. He had hoped for something more grand. Perhaps a position in politics or management. Something that made him feel less like a servant and more like someone important.Still, he quickly reminded himself that he had just been jobless two days ago. And the salary Mr. Hathaway would pay him was going to be over five times what he earned at his previous job. That was no small thing.Malcolm nodded and smiled politely. “Thank you, sir. I’m grateful.”But Mr. Harthaway noticed the brief sign of disappointment in Malcolm’s eyes. He leaned forward, placing his hands on the desk.“Malcolm,” he said gently, “I know you expected something more. But I need you to understand why I chose this path for you.”Malcolm listened closely.“If I sud
